Love this name and always thought of using it as a middle name, however now I'm starting to think it could work as a first name.

Is it too frilly/princessy? I would like something strong but pretty. Not necessarily thinking if the name is gorgeous but also if it would work in real life and schools etc. Does it stand out too much?

One person I mentioned the name said "Orally?!?!" Which made me a bit scared too.

Such a nice name, I've known a middle aged romanian women pan with this name and a french toddler with this name too!

Leeloo1233 · 07/09/2021 11:49

Nice, we are half French so were also thinking of the spelling Aurélia

It's lovely. Aurelie reminds me of orally but Aurelia doesn't. Would you be pronouncing it with a ray sound?

Palavah · 07/09/2021 11:51

How will you pronounce it?

SpamThief · 07/09/2021 11:51

also, it reminds me of Marcus Aurelius so not frilly to me.

wombforanotherone · 07/09/2021 11:59

I really like it. If you can avoid an accent in it then do, it will ultimately make life easier for your child.

ladycarlotta · 07/09/2021 12:01

I love it. I always wanted to use it for a daughter but it was too frilly for my partner - I actually read it as more classic/al but OK.

My Italian friend was aghast when I told her I liked it, apparently there it's very much an old lady's name. But that's trendy these days anyway.

bloominglovelyorange · 07/09/2021 12:02

Love this name

It's a lot of vowels and a bit of a mouthful to say imo. It will also date dreadfully.

There are similar names which are mixed I think..like

Alanna
Arianna
Arrabella
Annabel
Aria
Alia

It’s a Roman emperors name. A friend has it for her daughter. I think it’s a bit frilly, but each to their own!

Comedycook · 07/09/2021 12:18

It's just very much a 'now' name. Names go in cycles....if you hear the name Aurelia you know they are a young child and not a woman of 40. Similarly if you hear the name Nigel you can assume he's not a five year old boy. Aurelia is popular now but I doubt it will be in twenty years time just as it wasn't popular twenty years ago.

However, this may not bother you at all! It's just something I would try to avoid. If you like it though, use it! It's nice enough

Juanbablo · 07/09/2021 12:20

I LOVE it!

toastofthetown · 07/09/2021 12:22

Aurelia is a very frilly princessy name, but it’s one that I do like. I wouldn’t about it standing out; if anything I’d be more concerned with it blending in too much with other popular names Aurelia itself is rising very quickly in popularity, but it also fits into the trend of vowel heavy, liquid consonant names popular for girls. Aurelia doesn’t sound very distinct next to Arabella, Arya, Ophelia, Olivia, Ella etc.

alphabeticalabc · 07/09/2021 12:24

Reminds me of areola. It's a very nipple-like name.

ShinyGreenElephant · 07/09/2021 12:24

I know two toddler Aurelias, one (Aurelia-Rose) is in my daughters nursery class and does seem maybe a bit princessy (done up to the nines despite being 3 and playing in the mud all day) and the other one is my little dinosaur loving rough and tumble scruffy haired niece- she only ever gets called Ray now. I like it though and I wouldnt say its overly popular

Dinosaursdontgrowontrees · 07/09/2021 12:27

I think it’s beautiful!!

CandyFIosss · 07/09/2021 12:45

I was coming on to say it sounds More like areola!

Thefaceofboe · 07/09/2021 13:57

It’s lovely. Our baby is due in October and I suggested Aurelia as it seems kind of autumnal to me

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 07/09/2021 14:26

Aurelia is beautiful - elegant, classical and quite international feeling imo. It is gradually becoming more popular as people are looking for something similar to very popular Olivia or Amelia - but it's not even in the top 100 yet, so I don't think you need to worry about it dating.

In fact I think it's rise in popularity could be a help - more people are aware it's most commonly pronounced "Aw - ray -lee - ah" which takes it further away from the "orally" sound (plus gives the nn Rae as an option).

toastofthetown · 07/09/2021 14:47

I think that reason people are highlighting Aurelia as a name that might date is that as well as rising very quickly in popularity, it sounds a lot like other current names. So even if Aurelia itself never makes it to the top 100, when people hear the name it will still sound like a 2020 era name.

I think most names will date to some extent. Your classmates’ names don’t match with your parents’ classmates’ names, and your children’s classmates’ names will be different again. But I think (particularly for names like Aurelia which are on a sharp upward trajectory) its worth noting.

Balonzette · 07/09/2021 15:32

It's the kind of name, like Aurora or Ophelia, that if extremely rare would be absolutely beautiful, but when it becomes popular, verges into naff territory. I've seen it a lot on baby names boards, and it does seem to be making a sudden jump in popularity, and so would be worried that it would get too much more popular and become naff (which I feel the lovely Aurora already has done unfortunately).

DramaAlpaca · 07/09/2021 15:33

It's an ancient name, of course it won't date!

It's very pretty, but just a bit too much on the frilly side for me.

AutumnOctober · 07/09/2021 15:47

My daughter is Aurèlia and is constantly being complimented on her name. Some people call her Aurélia which is also fine, and she likes to be called Lia for short. It is becoming more popular but I don't think it will ever be particularly mainstream in the UK, Aaliyah is probably the more common similar name (also beautiful!).

How gorgeous! Did you ever get the "orally" comment? I'm sure people wouldn't say it when they see a little child though
