Thoughts on India?

Me and my husband have really struggled to agree on a name! Top of the shortlist at the moment is India..I have slight reservations about how others might perceive it (maybe as disrespectful culturally?). I’m pretty sure the name came before the birth of India the country / colonisation. India is also the first place me and husband travelled together for 6 mths so does have a special significance for us.

I would use the nickname ‘Indie’ most of the time. I also love Indigo but too hippy for my husband!

I really like it.

DramaAlpaca · 06/09/2021 00:18

I'm not keen, but I like that it has significance for you.

LowlyTheWorm · 06/09/2021 00:20

It’s lovely as it has a personal significance and a gentle slightly boho feel to it. Love Indie as a nickname but can also imagine a lawyer called India in years to come too.

whatausername · 06/09/2021 01:21

Mmm don't love it. I know it's been used quite widely as a girl's name but I do find it weird for some reason. Is Indira an option?

Onehotmess · 06/09/2021 01:55

That vile daily Mail woman called her daughter that. Aside from any other issues around the name you mentioned, this alone would put me off .

Enough4me · 06/09/2021 01:56

I prefer Indigo (Indie).

SundayTwizzle · 06/09/2021 07:37

I really like it!

DoTheNextRightThing · 06/09/2021 08:03

My first thought is always:

Katie Hopkins: I don’t like geographic names like Brooklyn or London.
Phillip Schofield: Your child's name is India.

But I still think it's a nice name. I just can't shake that memory.

Hopeisallineed · 06/09/2021 08:07

My friends dog is called India. So no.

hippy1952 · 06/09/2021 08:18

Love it. I have a beautiful 16 year old granddaughter called India!

LiveSimply · 06/09/2021 08:26

I really like it :) it has meaning to you, plus, it’s a beatiful name!

Mermaidpool · 06/09/2021 08:56

I really like it and nice it has a connection to your travels as well

toastofthetown · 06/09/2021 09:27

I’m not a fan. It does feel colonial, only starting to be used after British rule in India. I know it’s had a long use as a name and I don’t think she would be judged for her name but personally I’d avoid.

BubbleCoffee · 06/09/2021 12:34

It reminds me of India Knight. No further comment.

SpamThief · 06/09/2021 14:35

Reminds me of posh boho women like India Hicks.

zingally · 06/09/2021 15:03

Ehh... It's a bit chavvy round here.

hoomans · 06/09/2021 15:07

Love it.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 06/09/2021 15:41

Lovely- it's a beautiful, elegant name imo. Like you said, it was in use as a name in Britain pre colonisation so I don't find it disrespectful. However not everyone is aware of that, so I suppose some might think otherwise and you'd have to not mind that. It does also make me think of India Wilkes in classic Gone with the Wind (a minor "villain", but not an awful reference), I think the publication of the novel helped boost the names popularity.

AgnesNaismith · 06/09/2021 15:43

I prefer Indigo

olidora63 · 06/09/2021 16:40

Lovely name .

daisypond · 06/09/2021 17:52

No, not for me. I do see it as a name of establishment, colonial times, almost the opposite of boho. Not very classy these days.

Elisemum · 06/09/2021 20:29

I’m not a fan, what about Indie as a full name? More “normal” and a lovely name too

villamariavintrapp · 06/09/2021 20:45

It does sound a bit colonial to me, so not keen. Especially if you are white British?

ttcissoboring · 06/09/2021 20:51

I think it's a bit chav as another poster suggested. I'm not so keen

Sweetpea84 · 06/09/2021 20:54

Hardly chav. Binky Felstead daughter is called India and she’s well to do.
