What are your thoughts on the name Rupert?
Be honest. I don't know why but I love this name, it's the only name that to me is both unique and timeless and goes well with Arthur. ( the same feel?)

I know there is the Rupert the bear connection , but I don't really mind that.

What are your thoughts?

I have a Rupert so obviously love it! I did think it was quite unusual but there are 2 others in younger years at our small village primary now.

frogswimming · 31/08/2021 22:47

How about Christopher, Edward, Frederick, Charles, Barnaby. They go with Arthur.

catinboots21 · 31/08/2021 22:51

Love it. My wonderful best friend is a Rupert, NNs Rupe or Rup (to rhyme with tup)

Beamur · 31/08/2021 22:51

I wouldn't use it myself but have known a few adult Rupert's. One was a bit posh and dim the other is one of DH's best mates and is neither posh or dim. He's very outdoorsy and fun.

AnnaSW1 · 31/08/2021 22:59

To my ears it's weak and wet.

Aorh · 31/08/2021 23:11

I love it.

PricklesTheHedgehog · 31/08/2021 23:13

It's a great name. Go for it!

stairgates · 31/08/2021 23:19

I think Reuben would be a great match, Rupert is a bit posh to go with Arthur, its the kind of name your son could dislike when he gets older.

doorornottodoor · 31/08/2021 23:29

Overly posh. Not keen.

ghislaine · 31/08/2021 23:57

I love Rupert but DH wouldn’t let me use it. Said it was too upper class for us. That said, he then gave one of the DC the middle name Aloysius. No comment.

ghislaine · 01/09/2021 00:00

I will add that Ruperts always seem rather dashing.

Rupert Penry Jones
Rupert Campbell-Black
Rupert Brooke (‘the handsomest man in all England’ according to WB Yeats)

@PurplePizzaCake

Arthur doesn't have a nick name no, he just call him by his full name . I like Reuben , defo a contender now. I worry it's too overused though? I've done a quick google and it seems to be quite popular! I liked Rupert for the fact that it was quite unusual where I live x

Reuben is a nicer name or Rudi

daisypond · 01/09/2021 22:54

I like Rupert a lot. It’s a million times better than Reuben, which doesn’t go at all with Arthur. I don’t think Arthur and Rupert match perfectly, but they’re OK.

'Art' is short for Arthur. Or Artie.

I like Reuben too, it's lovely. So is Rupert.

Yes, and there’s also the actors Rupert Friend and Rupert Evans.

I don’t understand the ‘wet’ connection at all.

SiobhanSharpe · 02/09/2021 12:32
@HoldingTheDoor oh really!? I’ve never met someone and thought ‘they don’t seem like a Susie’ or whatever. Perhaps occasionally you meet someone and talking names or whatever and you think ‘oh yes that would have suited you too’ but I’ve never instinctively thought that a name seems ‘mismatched’ from someone. I find some names really hard to imagine as a baby but adults less so! Funny isn’t it. Xo
I've never got the ....that name doesn't suit her/him, and TBH it seems quite rude to actually say that to someone.
I may be biased though. Years ago i met a mum at DC's school and she baldly stated 'oh, you definitely don't seem at all like a Siobhan* to me, you're much more of a Margaret.'
Fucking cheek.
Her name was Gina and she had a bubble perm type hairdo and was decidedly frumpy matronly.

*not my real name.

SiobhanSharpe · 02/09/2021 12:33

And Rupert is quite nice. I do think of young military types but more the handsome and dashing ones!

Plumtree391 · 02/09/2021 12:49

Rupert Penry Jones is gorgeous.

muddyford · 02/09/2021 12:54

I love Reuben but my Hudson's father calls him Ruby...

muddyford · 02/09/2021 12:54

...godson's...

LittleGwyneth · 02/09/2021 13:42

I love it but it gets a bad reaction around these parts!

TatianaBis · 02/09/2021 15:00

I don't think it goes well with Arthur.

I'd do something like Osian or Ioan.

Emmgrem · 02/09/2021 23:43

I love it. It's one of my top boys names but DH doesn't like it because it sounds 'wet' or posh... I honestly think the days of those connotations are over though. Our parents generation would think of Rupert Bear but barely anyone knows who that is who's under 30!
I think Rupert is becoming like Hugo.. Hugo us very popular now, and once would've been associated as a posh name but now it's a cute baby name.
Similar to how Arthur would've been thought of as an old mans name until very recently when it's been reclaimed!

I also love Reuben and I'm torn between Reuben, Rupert or Rowan.. I did a poll on a large pregnancy Facebook group I'm on and Rupert was overwhelming voted the best choice out of those.

Also think both you perfectly with Arthur, in fact I was thinking of using Arthur as a middle name with them.

toastofthetown · 03/09/2021 19:00

Rupert is growing in popularity according to the statistics, and is just outside the top 100 in E&W and growing quickly. That's not a kind of name I would really call timeless to be honest. Any name with a sharp upward trajectory will very likely fall back down in the end, and sound a bit dated. I also think that Arthur will sound a bit dated in time too. That's not necessarily a bad thing; I'd also consider Richard to be dated in the way that I'd expect Richard to be my Dad's age and more surprised to meet a baby Richard but there's no bad association with it.

In 2019 though there were only 9 Ruperts born in Wales (would have needed at least 33 to be in the top 100), so it is unusual where you are. I think it works well with Arthur and it's a good name, personally I prefer it to Reuben.
