What are your thoughts on the name Rupert?
Be honest. I don't know why but I love this name, it's the only name that to me is both unique and timeless and goes well with Arthur. ( the same feel?)

I know there is the Rupert the bear connection , but I don't really mind that.

What are your thoughts?

A 'Rupert' is well-known military slang for a useless toff officer, totally lacking in skill or common sense.

LiveSimply · 31/08/2021 21:30

I love the name Rupert! Absolute classic.

PearlyRising · 31/08/2021 21:32

A bit wet and like a joke posh name.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 31/08/2021 21:40

If I'm honest it does have a softer, slightly upper class feel to me - like Timothy, Tristam etc but I don't think those associations are as strong as they would have been, say 20 years ago. I must admit I prefer classic Robert, but obviously that won't give you the "Roo" nn. Arthur is so popular now it doesn't really have any associations imo, so I think most names would work with it.

PwySyddYma · 31/08/2021 21:54

Nice name, just don't let him in the army as a "Rupert" is the not so nice nickname given to a posh young officer 😂

sjxoxo · 31/08/2021 21:54

I definitely don’t think wet when I hear Rupert! I think charming and traditional..I find Robert really generic! I can’t imagine a baby Robert.. to me Roberts are in their late 20s now.. I think it’s a generational think! I think wet when I think of Kevin/David/Michael.. these to me are so bland. Perhaps Rupert is a bit of a trend these days but I still love it, even more than the names like Forest or Arlo which are so trendy atm. All that said, you never meet someone who doesn’t suit their name well so I think go with what you like & it will be a great fit whoever they turn out to be! Xo

HoldingTheDoor · 31/08/2021 21:57

I disagree there.

GruntBaby · 31/08/2021 22:02

If you want the "Roo" nickname, how about Reuben?

frogswimming · 31/08/2021 22:04

@user1493494961

I've always thought it a bit 'wet'.
Same.
sjxoxo · 31/08/2021 22:12

@HoldingTheDoor oh really!? I’ve never met someone and thought ‘they don’t seem like a Susie’ or whatever. Perhaps occasionally you meet someone and talking names or whatever and you think ‘oh yes that would have suited you too’ but I’ve never instinctively thought that a name seems ‘mismatched’ from someone. I find some names really hard to imagine as a baby but adults less so! Funny isn’t it. Xo

Plumtree391 · 31/08/2021 22:13

Nice, classic. I've known a couple of Ruperts who were great.

I didn't know that but there's no reason to suppose the op's son will become a military man.

My dad was Walter - Wally!

annacondom · 31/08/2021 22:21

I really like Rupert. DS has a lovely mate called Rupert. He's known as Ru. Yes it's posh, but at least it's not tacky.

I can think of someone who doesn't suit their name.

saleorbouy · 31/08/2021 22:24

It's my middle name and I like it. It always caused a giggle at school at the beginning of term when teachers were checking the register details but older names are now much more normal. If you love it then go for it.

PurplePizzaCake · 31/08/2021 22:26

I love Rupert, and Arthur. Both were on my name list, but we went for Oscar. I also like Rufus and Reuben.

saharadry · 31/08/2021 22:28

I'm the first to criticise names and there's about 5 boys names I like in the world lol!

I thought of the bear connection but it's not a bad or ott connection.

I actually really like Rupert to the point I'd consider using it!
Like rupes as a nn.

Philandbill · 31/08/2021 22:38

I like it, despite the fact that, as with posters above, I think of it in the army sense of "he's a bit of a Rupert" meaning he is a posh and ineffective officer, probably cavalry, who is also rather wet but thinks highly of himself. That said, a friend's husband's name is Rupert and he is a nice chap who was actually once an officer in the infantry Grin

glw0408 · 31/08/2021 22:39

@GruntBaby
I quite like Reuben , I haven't really thought about it until now!

Can you see it going with his brother Arthur though ?

I think Arthur and Reuben sound great together. Does Arthur have a nickname?

Brave man...brave, brave man. To be a officer called Rupert 😂 bless him.

ozymandiusking · 31/08/2021 22:43

Love Rupert!.Our cat is called Rupert, he is quite large and fluffy and the people at the charity thought he was like a bear.
Hence, Rupert Bear. He is also an absolute gentleman.

HoldingTheDoor · 31/08/2021 22:44

Reuben is much better and works well with Arthur.

Philandbill · 31/08/2021 22:44

@PwySyddYma he has a strong character and a sense of humour....

AfterSchoolWorry · 31/08/2021 22:45

Drippy.

GruntBaby · 31/08/2021 22:46

Reuben and Arthur go really well together.
