Juliet Vs Juliette

Reasons for and against each spelling?
I probably prefer the latter but find myself saying it with a soft J which makes it sound like I'm putting on an accent Blush but I love both!

I prefer Juliette too. I am partial to what mumsnetters would call a "frilly" name though.

Bbq1 · 29/08/2021 12:25

Juliette. It's much prettier than Juliet

Keladrythesaviour · 29/08/2021 14:00

Ooh thank you everyone. A bit of a fair split though probably erring towards Juliet!

My own name is a constant mis-spell mispronounce so in some ways that doesn't bother me as I've had it for a lifetime, but then do I want that for my child as well Grin
Glad the consensus seems to be that it's a nice name though! I think DH prefers the more English Juliet as that's how he would pronounce it but I think my pronunciation is closer to the french. I'm more familiar with Italian which is perhaps why I say it the way I do but I don't think they have a version (which I could get away with using).

I love both, but prefer Juliette. Can’t quite articulate why, I just do!

Smurftastic · 29/08/2021 15:03

OP, I think Italian version would be Giulietta.

summerisler · 29/08/2021 15:08

Juliet. I chose it as a middle name for my DD. Beautiful, classy name.

mewe3 · 29/08/2021 15:13

Juliette, looks more feminine

Keladrythesaviour · 29/08/2021 15:20

Well now I feel silly, of course it is! Can't believe I forgot that. Wouldn't work for us though as we want a J start for family reasons.

I'm a Juliette!
I love the name and people are lovely about it. Haven't had the soft j pronunciation (unless speaker is French), or stress on a particular syllable. I get the odd "Juliet" but it's fine.
But whichever you go for will be lovely OP, and I think she will love it. Flowers

PermanentTemporary · 29/08/2021 15:52

I would choose Juliet but kate in life I have a lovely new friend called Juliette which has endeared that spelling to me. So I think you can't lose.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 29/08/2021 16:49

Juliet. If you live in the UK or an English speaking country I think Juliette will be constantly misspelt (thanks to the fame of Romeo and Juliet) and she might find that annoying. I must admit I pronounce them both the same though?

I love Juliet btw - a beautiful, elegant yet underused name.

WhoppingBigBackside · 29/08/2021 18:09

Juliet. It's a classic. Juliette seems a bit 1970.

daisypond · 29/08/2021 18:18

I’m trying to get my head round the idea that Juliette is “prettier”. In what way? It’s more French, certainly. But I don’t see why it’s prettier. If anything, to English eyes, it’s fussy and cluttered and misspelled. And even if it is prettier, in some way that I don’t understand, why would that be a good thing? I would think it should be something to avoided for a girl.

Cotswoldmama · 29/08/2021 18:28

Juliet is better and I'd pronounce them both exactly the same.

helpmum2003 · 29/08/2021 18:30

Juliet

Enko · 29/08/2021 18:33

Juliette I just think it looks nicer.

superram · 29/08/2021 18:37

Are you french? If not, Juliet.

DramaAlpaca · 29/08/2021 19:57

I much prefer both the spelling and pronunciation of Juliet, with the stress on the first syllable.

WhoppingBigBackside · 29/08/2021 20:22

Me too. I know a Juliette, and I'm always tempted to call her Julie.

WhoppingBigBackside · 29/08/2021 20:23

Both Julie and Juliette in a French accent are lovely.

IsThePopeCatholic · 29/08/2021 20:29

Juliet. Unless you’re French, of course.

marchduck · 29/08/2021 20:30

Juliette, but said the French way. I love the different pronunciation. Juliet is also lovely but much more clipped, if that make sense

Theoldwoman · 30/08/2021 12:06

Juliet, I like simple spellings. The extra TE are just not needed.

To all English eyes or to your particular English eyes? Also, are English eyes in some way superior? That's certainly the tone I'm sensing.

VanillaAndOrange · 30/08/2021 12:29

Tough one for me - I prefer the Juliet spelling on paper but I've always pronounced it the way people here are associating with Juliette. I think Juliet and just lead by example with the pronunciation.
