How popular is Alexander for a baby/toddler in your area? It's been my favourite name for years even tho I don't normally like traditional names. I'm due end of November we have our girls names sorted but boys were super stuck on and keep coming back to Alex but I don't like popular names and ifs always high in the charts but people I've spoken to don't know any little Alexs so just wondering how popular it actually is

I know 2. One a relative and one his friend from a hobby. No Alex's in his school though.

Hekatestorch · 23/08/2021 23:18

Oh both are Alexander, on their BC.

My relative decided it was going to be Alexandra or Alexander, so would have been Alex regardless of sex.

cactijones · 24/08/2021 20:11

Brilliant. That's our boys name settled then. Thank you all

Quite popular I’d say and as a middle name it’s also great.
Lovely classic name. Not boring.

bloominglovelyorange · 25/08/2021 10:30

I know loads of Ralph's and Raffys
Don't know any Alex's under 10 - it's such a classic, I'd use it

queenatom · 25/08/2021 16:15

I know a five year old Alex(ander). Love the name, I'd seriously consider using it myself if I have a second boy.

MissMarplesGoddaughter · 25/08/2021 16:19

There are 3 in my daughter's year. An Alexander, a Xander and an Alex.

cactijones · 25/08/2021 21:11

@bloominglovelyorange I love Ralph buy I think it's very in the moment and I'd regret using it.
@MissMarplesGoddaughter what year is your daughter in?

Thanks for the input x

I've got one and not come across any other babies/toddlers with the same name

LouNatics · 25/08/2021 21:26

2255 Alexanders and 594 Alexs born in England in 2019. Alexander has gained popularity between 2018 and 2019, moving up five places. The 2020 data isn’t out yet but will come out soon so you can see if it’s moving up further.

It’s less popular in Wales.

It’s a lovely name though, don’t let maybes put you off.

LemonPeonies · 25/08/2021 21:28

Alexander is a strong name, mine is the Romanian take on it Alexandru and I love it 😊

ZenNudist · 25/08/2021 21:32

I know lots of adults called Alex. I also have ds. None in his year at school. At nursery he was Alex initial as there was another Alex but you can always get a couple of name duplicates. Personally I love it. It's strong, interesting, easy to shorten and is quite classy and dignified in full or casual and friendly Al, Alex, Lex, Xanda in nickname form.

It's also funny to have male and female Alexes. Not many names that work so well for both sexes.

Blueuggboots · 25/08/2021 21:33

Mine is 10, one other in his year, another friend has an 8 year old and another friend has a 1 year old so it's pretty popular in my world!!

marchduck · 25/08/2021 21:50

My Alex is 14, and the only one in his year group
I was out for a walk with him when he was a couple of weeks old, and a lovely older lady stopped for a chat. She asked his name, and said she was so pleased to have come across a baby Alexander, because her husband had died recently and he had been called Alec. I've never forgotten that conversation, it was one of those wee moments of connection
I also seem to recall that Peppa Pig"s baby cousin is called AlexanderSmile

@cactijones

DD is in Year 2

OH has just reminded me that there are 2 Alexanders in DD2 nursery class and one of our neighbours has a new baby Alex.

bloominglovelyorange · 26/08/2021 10:02

I don't know any Alex's under 10. There's none at the local school

Hersetta427 · 26/08/2021 10:09

I have an Alex (not Alexander though). He is the only one in his school. He just turned 10.

Balonzette · 27/08/2021 14:44

Funny how people have different perceptions of names - I love Alexander and also the names you said you didn't like - Ralph, Rufus, Jasper, and others similar like Barnaby, Rory, Gabriel - and have always considered Alexander to be a name that fitted in well with that list. I view it as a more soft, gentle boy's name, a name that would fit in well into this category.

As for popularity, I know one Alex but she is a girl.

cactijones · 27/08/2021 18:03

@Balonzette I love all those names but my husband unfortunately dosent. does anyone know where you can find out how popular a name is in your area? I've been looking but haven't found it. Thanks for all the input xx

It’s the name I would have chosen for a boy. I don’t know any.

But take with a pinch of salt. Alexander is pretty high on the baby name list but as you find here that doesn't mean the country is overrun with them.

I think the thing is there is so much more diversity in names these days (especially for boys) so you don't get the 3x Davids and 2x Jameses in every class like you did when we were kids. Even if a name is popular there is enough variety that they still won't be one of a dozen.

LiveSimply · 28/08/2021 06:47

I love this name!
I have worked in a school since 2014 (2 schools altogether, changed job in 2016) & there has never been an Alex / Alexander!
Such a strong name :). If you really like this name, please please go for it - I don’t think you’d regret it!

KingsOfTheWildFrontier · 28/08/2021 06:50

It's my son's middle name, after a relative. I don't know any child called it as a first name. I wouldn't have chosen it orginally but really like it now.

Kanaloa · 28/08/2021 07:29

My dd friend’s older brother is an Alex, then younger dd has a friend who is Alexander, full name, and our friend had a 3 year old Alexander who is sometimes called Alex. When I worked in childcare I used to look after a Zander too, but his whole name was Zander. So relatively few compared to how many boys I know called Theo/Teddy/Jack/Charlie. It’s also one of my son’s middle names! Lovely name in my opinion.

Kanaloa · 28/08/2021 07:30

Not that I dislike Theo/Teddy/Jack/Charlie, all fine names but they seem to be more popular.
