Lorna?

Thoughts on Lorna? It's just popped into my head. I liked reading Lorna Doone. But baby will have an auntie she'll see fairly regularly called Laura - too similar do you think?

I absolutely love the name Lorna. It's unusual without being dated or wacky.
I don't think it matters that it's similar to her aunty's name.

BabyRace · 20/08/2021 16:49

Love it. Well known but not too popular.

Andante57 · 20/08/2021 16:56

I love Lorna and wanted to call our dd that. However I’d chosen our dc’s name so I had to let dh have a choice.

Dancingonmoonlight · 20/08/2021 16:59

I know three women named Lorna. They are age 45-53,

It’s dated IMO.
But I wouldn’t think it’s too similar to Laura.

Unusualllly · 20/08/2021 17:05

Lorna is a fab name choice.

MrsFin · 20/08/2021 17:05

Lorna is awful. I can't really explain why, but it just sounds horrible when said out loud.

ShinyHappySummers · 20/08/2021 17:12

No.

Ifonlyidknownthen · 20/08/2021 17:15

Hate the name, and as pp says i don't think it sounds nice when said aloud. It does all come down to personal preference as with any name however.

MidnightHangingTree · 20/08/2021 17:15

It's definitely a middle-aged woman name to me, sorry.

EmpressWitchDoesntBurn · 20/08/2021 17:19

I have a friend Lorna in her 50s who utterly rocks. I think it's a much stronger name than than Edie, Evie etc.

WhoppingBigBackside · 20/08/2021 17:21

It's nice but depends on the accent. I'm not keen on it said as LoRRna

Miliao · 20/08/2021 17:22

Lovely name, I know three under three and they are all a delight!

MaMelon · 20/08/2021 17:26

It’s very dated and very common/popular up here in Scotland amongst a certain age group of women. I don’t like the way it sounds.

Phyllis321 · 20/08/2021 17:30

The writer and critic Lorna Sage wrote in her memoirs that she spent her childhood correcting people who thought it was Laura, and that it was a very unusual name at the time (born about 1943).
I’m neutral - I neither like or dislike it.

LilacSloth · 20/08/2021 18:53

I think it is a lovely name.

DowntonCrabby · 20/08/2021 18:57

I love it, a really close friend in her 50’a and a darling classmate of DS8 share the name, it suits both perfectly so I disagree that it’s dated.
We’re Scottish so definitely a popular name here of ladies 40+.

GreenTeaBlackCoffeeAndRedWine · 20/08/2021 18:57

I like it. I know a lorna who's about 19. Scottish though so it is more popular here

SummersOverSeasideTown · 20/08/2021 19:01

Love it, especially if you enjoyed Lorna Doone.
I'm not having any more but still have The List, Lorna is most definitely on it.

AnyaMoondial · 20/08/2021 19:16

Really like it.

romdowa · 20/08/2021 19:18

I prefer laurna, it's a bit softer.

RubyFowler · 20/08/2021 19:19

Nice, I like it.

lottiegarbanzo · 20/08/2021 19:21

Oh, that's a nice name.

If you wanted a fancier long version, you could go for Eleonora, or Leonora but honestly, Lorna is just lovely.

Greenrubber · 20/08/2021 19:25

Seems to be like marmite

I'm not keen I think it's dated and know too many 50+ woman named Lorna

MissDollyMix · 20/08/2021 19:30

I have a wonderful friend named Lorna. Still hate the name though! Sorry!

lottiegarbanzo · 20/08/2021 20:20

Maybe it depends where in the country you are? Is it more well-used in Scotland? Would it go with Catriona, Fiona there, in terms of vintage?

I've only ever met one adult Lorna.

What is similar to Laura is Lauren. That's basically the1990s-2010s version of Laura.
