What do you think of this name? Surname is one syllable, common surname. 36 weeks pregnant and this is currently our top contender-what image does this name bring to mindSmile thank you!! (P.S other name on the list was Edie but feel it’s a bit too popular at the moment)

Effie is lovely - but I do think of it as a nn personally. It's also been rising in popularity, on the back of Evie etc - though not as much as Edie. While it's traditionally a nn for dated Euphemia, I've also heard it used for lots of pretty longer versions - Josephine, Stephanie, Persephone, Ophelia etc (basically any name with an "eph/eff" sound).

lolabeex · 16/08/2021 00:29

Strong skins connotation but that won't matter in a few years when it will be forgotten. Younger generations won't know it. I love the name but would choose a longer form to give her more choice

felulageller · 16/08/2021 00:30

It just makes me think of f off.

TheMamaYo · 16/08/2021 00:36

It's what the school kids used to call a condom, so it's a no from me.

Balonzette · 16/08/2021 06:23

Love Effie! It can be a nn for Josephine

WeDidntMeanToGoToSea · 16/08/2021 06:38

Effi Briest (basically a German version of Madame Bovary). Not a happy association. And much too insubstantial as a 'proper' name.

LizzieBet14 · 16/08/2021 07:01

Not for me. I can imagine having to repeat it a few times when someone asks what her name is.

pilates · 16/08/2021 07:10

I don’t like it, prefer Edie

Madlyash · 16/08/2021 09:26

Thank you all for your honest feedback.

It’s my daughter’s name-she suits it down to the ground. She is Evelyn on her BC but we much preferred Effie over the more common diminutive, Evie.

Kettletoaster · 16/08/2021 11:54

Effing Hell…

Sorry OP - too close to swearing for me

Tinkles78 · 16/08/2021 12:03

I've come across an Efi before, pronounced the same way! Think it's short for Eftihia, a Greek name. She's only ever called Efi and I like it!

CoalCraft · 16/08/2021 12:48

Reminds me of "effing", as in the euphamism for "fucking"

MaMelon · 16/08/2021 12:53

It was the name of lots of older women when I was growing up (short for Euphemia, so you can imagine why it was shortened), so I still have that image in my head. I think it will be one of those names which has a brief rise in popularity (a bit like Ruby a few years back) and then will date again.

whatagloriousthingtobe · 16/08/2021 14:06

I love it but I instantly think of skins. But as others have said that will only be a certain generation !

WhoppingBigBackside · 16/08/2021 15:26

Awful.

RuthW · 16/08/2021 15:26

Awful. It's half a name, like Alfie.

Violetlavenders · 16/08/2021 16:55

Euphemia is ok

But Effie sounds like effing

Ravenclawsome · 16/08/2021 17:02

Effie Gray.

John Ruskin, and later John Everett Millais, wife.

TempsPerdu · 16/08/2021 18:27

DD (3) currently goes by a nickname that’s very similar to Effie. But it’s short for another more ‘grown up’, more substantial name, so she has the option of adopting that later on if she chooses. I don’t think I’d consider using Effie on its own, as it’s quite cutesy for an adult, plus like several pps it does make me think of ‘effing’.

Lizzie523 · 16/08/2021 18:31

Very Victorian (Effie Gray). Quite like it.

Blackberrybunnet · 16/08/2021 18:42

Only Effie I have ever met was short for Euphemia.

SionnachRua · 16/08/2021 18:43

Love the idea of it but would never use it, it's a bit insubstantial aside from the effin' thing.

GingerAndTheBiscuits · 16/08/2021 18:44

DD6 has an Effie in her class. Have never made any association between the name and a swear word! Or FE or condoms (?!). I don’t know if she has a longer name (her sibling also has quite an unusual name so I’m guessing not) but she’s very sweet and it suits her. She’s a real adventurer.

MargosKaftan · 16/08/2021 18:58

I know an Effie, its short for Persephone.
