How would you pronounce Fionn?

We live in the Munster region of Ireland and are pregnant with a second boy woo!

I love the name Fionn.
I’m just a bit confused by prononciation.

I always thought it was Fee-on (two syllables).
But we were in Dublin during the week and someone mentioned it was pronounced Fy-un (one syllable).

And Google says it’s pronounced Fin??

How would you personally pronounce it?

I know a little girl with Welsh parents who is called Fionn and she pronounces it fee-on.

sycamore54321 · 07/08/2021 07:57

I’d always say Fyun - single syllable -

In certain dialects it might be Fin (think Fionn McCool / Finn McCool)

Fe-onn doesn’t sound right to me in any kind of dialect.

koalaroobear · 07/08/2021 07:58

Feen

ineedaholidaynow · 07/08/2021 07:58

How is Fy-un one syllable?

sycamore54321 · 07/08/2021 07:58

Isn’t Fee-on the Welsh girls’ name Ffion rather than the Irish boys’ Fionn?

Garman · 07/08/2021 07:58

I'm from where you live, it's pronounced Fyun.

Tsamina · 07/08/2021 07:59

My DD has a Fionn in her class and his is pronounced Fee-on. I did for quite a while think she said she knew a 'Theon' but it's a lovely name.

It would be like Bjorn is one syllable

IsFuzzyBeagMise · 07/08/2021 08:01

It's pronounced 'fyun'.
I'm from Munster.

peacelily3 · 07/08/2021 08:01

My friend who is welsh is called Fionn and is pronounced as fee-on.

NannyR · 07/08/2021 08:02

@sycamore54321

Isn’t Fee-on the Welsh girls’ name Ffion rather than the Irish boys’ Fionn?
It is! Sorry, haven't had my morning coffee yet! The girl I know is Ffion, not Fionn.
jendifer · 07/08/2021 08:03

Ffion is fee-on (Welsh girls name) and Feen/fyun is fionn- Celtic men’s name

Rosiiiiie · 07/08/2021 08:07

@sycamore54321 hubby is Welsh and still pronounces Ffion and Fionn the same. I think he has no clue 😂

@IsFuzzyBeagMise also what I thought until I met someone called Fionn at DS school and the mum pronounces it Fee-on.

@Tsamina I’m assuming it’s a boy Fionn? Whereabouts are you located?

Ivy48 · 07/08/2021 08:11

Well it’s not the Welsh pronunciation as it’s spelt Ffion/Ffionn. I would pronounce it fern/fyun

M0rT · 07/08/2021 08:12

I'm from Dublin and would have always said Fy-un one syllable until a gaelgeoir corrected me to Finn (McCumhaill).
But any I've met have been Fy-un.
Could Fee-on just be Cork/Kerry accent for Fy-un?

Tsamina · 07/08/2021 08:12
@Tsamina I’m assuming it’s a boy Fionn? Whereabouts are you located?
Yes definitely a boy. And London.

Garman · 07/08/2021 08:15

It's 100% pronounced Fyun OP, I've literally never heard it pronounced differently in my nearly 40 years of being Irish/living in Ireland.

Fionn
Additional Information: Irish Munster pronunciation (Gaelic):
The ‘i’ is pronounced as ‘in’ or ‘it’. In Irish Gaeilge, the ‘i’ can only be pronounced ‘ee’ if it has a fada.

MindyStClaire · 07/08/2021 08:17

I'm from Dublin and would say fyun. I live in NI now and suspect in Ulster dialect it's Finn.

I can't see how those letters would make fee-on in Irish. I vaguely recall meeting one or two over the years, but there are some horribly mangled Irish names out there so I wouldn't take that as instructive!

MindyStClaire · 07/08/2021 08:19

@ineedaholidaynow

How is Fy-un one syllable?
Consider the word "young", then take the g off the end and stick an f at the start.

It's not F-eye-un, just in case that's what you're picturing.

twoofusburningmatches · 07/08/2021 08:24

Fyun - one syllable. Definitely not fee-on. Every Fionn I’ve known in ROI has been Fyun, although have met some from NI/England who pronounced it Finn.

ineedaholidaynow · 07/08/2021 08:26

Thank you @MindyStClaire

SmallChairs · 07/08/2021 08:32

@Garman

I'm from where you live, it's pronounced Fyun.
As am I. It’s one syllable, Fyunn. I know loads of Cork and Kerry Fionns aged from 3 to their 30s, and everyone of them is a Fyunn.Whichdoesn’t at all preclude it being different in other dialects, but I think you’d struggle with everyone defaulting to the Munster way.

@Rosiiiiie I've never heard of it pronounced that way, always 'fyun'. It's a lovely name, one of my favourites.
