… naming your child Percy because of the Percy Pig association? 🐷

OP posts:

FadoFado · 03/08/2021 15:48

I'd avoid it because it's an awful name.

MintyGreenDream · 03/08/2021 15:52

I still think of Percy from 80s Coronation Street.Awful name.

Violetlavenders · 03/08/2021 16:37

Where does Percy penis come from?

BikeRunSki · 03/08/2021 16:39

Have you never heard the expression “Point Percy at the porcelain”?

It means a man is going for a wee.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 03/08/2021 17:53

The pig thing wouldn't bother me as an adult (although I suppose it could cause teasing by kids who are more likely to be very familiar with the sweets if he was overweight...) . I know Percival was a famous Knight which is cool but nn Percy has a Cecil, Eugene sort of retro nerdy sound to me, sorry.

Kneller92 · 03/08/2021 18:01

No I think it's a sweet name. So many names have less than desirable association's so just go for it I say

bertieb7 · 03/08/2021 18:04

I like the name Percy, and have never heard of the penis association. Pig would probably worry me but that being said, if I heard of a child called Percy my reaction would be positive and I would think it is a lovely name.

DinosaurDiana · 03/08/2021 18:06

Yes, I wouldn’t use it.

Cookiebox · 03/08/2021 21:48

Terrible name. Seriously it's one of the worst you can come up with.

Elspethelf · 04/08/2021 03:00

I love the name Percy. I'm surprised it's this unpopular

Aquamarine1029 · 04/08/2021 03:05

Percy is fucking horrible. It astounds me that anyone would name a boy this. There's a reason it was used in The Green Mile.

LimeRedBanana · 04/08/2021 03:11

@emmathedilemma

No and i've also never heard it used for penis apart from on this forum so i wonder if that's a regional thing.
Well I’m in NZ and I’ve heard it used for penis, so if it’s ‘regional’, it’s at a global level. Grin

Percy Pigs are definitely not why I wouldn’t choose the name (also old enough to remember Lord Percy Percy on Blackadder, which has forever tainted it).

If you like it though, go for it. People come to be greater than the sum of their name, so to speak, and people’s associations change.

LimeRedBanana · 04/08/2021 03:13

And yes, he was Lord Percy Percy, so idiotic, he used it twice…

WildCherryBlossom · 04/08/2021 06:03

Oh I really like the name Percy!

I have never ever come across the Penis / porcelain thing before this thread

I do remember the Blackadder and Coronation St characters but that wouldn't put me off personally.

How about Digby as an alternative?

cariadlet · 04/08/2021 06:49

The biggest dog in the world or Lord Digby Jones. Not much of an improvement on Percy.

WildCherryBlossom · 04/08/2021 07:06

I think Digby Jones is pretty much retired now so not really a very current namesake (did he even get as far as Lord? I thought just Sir.)

No idea about the dog reference. I once knew a cat called Digby but I've known a lot of cats with cool names. And a couple of lovely human Digbys too.

cariadlet · 04/08/2021 08:18

Digby Jones is back in the news because of his tweet criticising Alex Scott's pronunciation.

The dog is the titular character in an old film.

Never met a human called Digby. It sounds a bit of a joke name to me.

LittleGwyneth · 05/08/2021 10:40

I've never heard the penis thing in my life. I think Percy is lovely.

queenatom · 05/08/2021 14:56

Another one just here to comment that I've also never heard the penis thing before! It's not a name I'd use but it has no strong associations for me with anything.

VanillaAndOrange · 05/08/2021 23:26

I would avoid it because I think it sounds a bit pompous - sorry.

Bortles · 06/08/2021 01:15

It's a very small, squeaky sounding name. Tim in a similar fashion.

GloriousGoosebumps · 06/08/2021 03:01

Those of you who have never heard of "pointing Percy" should have a word with your husbands/partners since it's a phrase used by men rather than women!

Topseyt · 06/08/2021 03:15

I would avoid it simply because I don't like it.

I do also remember when growing up that some boys referred to their willies as "Percy." Then comes the Percy Pig association too, although I do love a nice bag of M & S Percy Pigs. 😎

Onlinedilema · 06/08/2021 07:12

I 'd avoid it full stop.

DoucheCanoe · 06/08/2021 18:00

@GloriousGoosebumps my DH is bemused by the "pointing Percy" thing, as am I and most others that I know.

I'm early 30's and Scottish - not sure if it's generational/regional?
