Hi

We love the nicknames Ed, Eddie and Teddy but would want to have a fuller name on the birth certificate.

We like Edward, Edwin and Edmund and wondered thoughts on these? As much as we like Edward we know so many boys in our area with this name and so thought maybe Edwin or Edmund might be more unusual! Please rank these names in order!

Any other suggestions much appreciated!

In order - Edward, Edwin, Edmund

I like Ed and Eddie, but not Teddy.

I wouldn't worry about popularity. If you love a name, go for it.

CherryMaple · 02/08/2021 03:43

I like Ed and Ted as shortenings. I would go for Edward or Edmund. All great names.

Bigoldmachine · 02/08/2021 03:56

Out of your three I prefer Edward , but don’t discount Edgar! A great name IMO.

BebesChamber · 02/08/2021 04:12

Edwin, Edmund then Edward. I would have loved to name my son Edwin but DH vetoed it.

MollyBloomYes · 02/08/2021 04:18

I have a Ned whose full name is Edison. Quite marmite on here because it's a dreaded 'surname name' but irl it's always very well received! Suits his quirky little self as well Smile

Annie188 · 02/08/2021 04:57

None how horrific!

Ginandplatonic · 02/08/2021 05:11

Edward, Edwin, Edmund. But I agree with a pp. Edgar is cool!

Rude.

Love Eddie, it's a great name. Quite like Edwin.

OrangeAndYellowAndBlue · 02/08/2021 07:17

Edward or Edmund

Chilldonaldchill · 02/08/2021 07:17

Edmund then Edward then Edwin.
But I also like Edgar.

Soontobe60 · 02/08/2021 07:19

Just stick with Eddie!

Buckleyourseatbelt · 02/08/2021 07:20

I like Edmund-it’s my son’s middle name in fact.

I also know a little Edmund who goes by Ned.

Violetlavenders · 02/08/2021 07:27

How do you get Ned or Ted from Edward or Edmund? I can understand Ed as shortening.

Anyway I prefer Edgar as an Ed name.

Holly60 · 02/08/2021 07:54

I would just go with Edward. It’s popular for a reason. Then shorten to Teddy, Ted or Ned.

Edward is classic so it doesn’t matter that it’s really popular - it won’t date

Holly60 · 02/08/2021 07:56

@Violetlavenders

Anyway I prefer Edgar as an Ed name.

Ted and Ned are definitely traditional shortenings of Edward.

Like Nell for Eleanor or Bess for Elizabeth

MrsSkylerWhite · 02/08/2021 07:57

Edmund will always be Blackadder to me Grin

katienana · 02/08/2021 08:01

Married to an Edmund, I think it has a nice soft sound to it.

FredaFox · 02/08/2021 08:02

My dad was an Edwin and everyone called him Ted

ForkedIt · 02/08/2021 08:04

@Violetlavenders Do you think people called Ted and Ned are actually Tedward and Nedward? Grin

BikeRunSki · 02/08/2021 08:14

@Violetlavenders

How do you get Ned or Ted from Edward or Edmund? I can understand Ed as shortening.

Anyway I prefer Edgar as an Ed name.

Some that begin with “E” (or sometime “He”), traditionally have affectionate short forms which begin with N:

Edward - Ned
Helen, Eleanor - Nell

This comes from the medieval use of “mine” to refer to close family members - so “Mine Ed” and “Mine El” became “my Ned” and “My Nell” as language evolved.

With Ted, it was also common to change/swap/add letters at the front of a name for variety, a d to make them clearer when shouted across a battlefield/hunting ground. Eg Ted, Bill, Bob are the variations that have stuck.

WimpoleHat · 02/08/2021 08:15

I came on to suggest Edgar as well - it’s unusual, but classic. Not keen on Edwin, though.

Tryingtryingandtrying · 02/08/2021 08:17

Edison is a lovely name as PP says above.

Enko · 02/08/2021 08:34

Edwin Edmund Edgar (as yes like that too) Edward

Cbeebiesrehab · 02/08/2021 08:43

Edward but if Edison was on your list I would 100% pick that one!

35andThriving · 02/08/2021 08:51

I like Edmund, I love Edgar. I can see why people like Edward but find it a little overused.
