Posting for a friend who asked my opinion.

I’ve never considered it before, but I am surprised to say I love it

You could do it, but 99% of people would pronounce it "Sheryl" so she would spend her life saying " No it's pronounced CH - eryl" , which would be tiresome for her.

Kanaloa · 20/07/2021 06:42

I think most people would say Sheryl. Reminds me of the royle family pronounced with the ch.

Yrevocsid · 20/07/2021 06:42

What about Cherry instead? Otherwise she will always be correcting people.

drpet49 · 20/07/2021 06:42

What is the point? Everyone will pronounce it as Sheryl. Just seems so pointless.

RockingMyFiftiesNot · 20/07/2021 06:47

She will spend her whole life having her name incorrectly pronounced and having to correct people.
Like a friend whose name is spelled Karen, pronounced care-en.She gave up correcting people in the end but said it was awful as a young child.

DrJump · 20/07/2021 06:49

I worked with someone who had this. She spent some much time saying Ch eryl.

hawkehurstgang · 20/07/2021 06:49

I don't like either but agree that nobody will say it right anyway.

Antiqueanniesmagiclanternshow · 20/07/2021 06:51

I know someone with this name. Corrects people constantly and gets really narked about it.

MadisonAvenue · 20/07/2021 06:52

I was at school with a Cheryl pronounced with Ch, so that’s how I always think it’s said.

HeronLanyon · 20/07/2021 06:56

I too knew a CHeryl when you g and so I’ve never said Sheryl and actually am not fond of that pronunciation (or spelling) .

MichelleScarn · 20/07/2021 06:58

Agree if that's the sound that's like go for Cherry!

groovergirl · 20/07/2021 06:58

The new little Cheryl will have the advantage of being the only Cheryl in her class, school and probably entire age cohort, so she can call the shots on how her name is pronounced. Or maybe go with "Cherrill", which is more likely to get randoms pronouncing it with a ch.

I like Cheryl; it has a cool vintage vibe and is very different from anything in the current top 100.

Fifthtimelucky · 20/07/2021 07:23

I don't agree that everyone will pronounce it 'Sh'

I assume Cheryl is pronounced 'Ch' and Sheryl is pronounced 'Sh'. But that is no doubt because I only know one Cheryl, and she pronounces it 'Ch'

CloseYourEyesAndSee · 20/07/2021 07:24

It's a regional variation and you can't really impose it if you live in an area with the Sh sound rather than the Ch sound

RickOShay · 20/07/2021 07:25

The Cheryl I know pronounces it with a Ch

HunterHearstHelmsley · 20/07/2021 07:28

My go to is always Cheryl, not Sheryl. I went to primary with one and Sheryl sounds wrong, even now.

rantymcrantface66 · 20/07/2021 07:31

Agree with @CloseYourEyesAndSee that it's a regional thing which is being demonstrated by the mixed comments. Will be difficult to change people's pronunciation of it in a sh eryl area.

daisypond · 20/07/2021 07:44

I would always pronounce it as CH as the go-to.

sorryforswearing · 20/07/2021 07:51

I’d say it with a ‘ch’ sound too. Surprised to hear others wouldn’t.

RockingMyFiftiesNot · 20/07/2021 08:16

Whereas I'd only heard it pronounced Sheryl until a friend had a daughter pronounced with Ch.

I think the very fact there are people on this thread who would assume Ch and others who would assume Sh would put me off choosing it.

Chunkymenrock · 20/07/2021 08:20

Cherry is gorgeous and much nicer than Cheryl. Why not go with that? No pronunciation problems!

HoliHormonalTigerlilly · 20/07/2021 08:27

Cherry is nicer.

KirstenBlest · 20/07/2021 08:54

How about Cherith?

MrsJones92 · 20/07/2021 09:04

I know a girl who pronounces it this way and she does have to tell everyone how it should be pronounced as most presume SHeryl. It is a lovely name though.

HeronLanyon · 20/07/2021 10:47

Following the Cheryl example, wouldn’t Cherry have the Sherry problem (less so than, CHeryl admittedly)
