Posting for a friend who asked my opinion.

I’ve never considered it before, but I am surprised to say I love it

I went to primary school with a Cheryl, all that I remember about her is that she had blonde hair and constantly corrected the pronunciation of her name.

Yutes · 22/07/2021 14:28

I knew a Cherelle and that was pronounced with a Sh. Like Cher.

HonorHiding · 23/07/2021 05:08

In my primary school years (70s) I had a babysitter named Cheryl (CH). I don’t think I’ve ever met another one. TBH it’s not my style at all, whatever the pronunciation.

woodfort · 23/07/2021 06:09

Wasn’t Cheryl in The Royale Family (daughter of Mary who lived next door) a CH-eryl?

Ginfilledcats · 23/07/2021 06:20

I know a Ch cheryl who lives her name but has to correct people every day lol

PurplePansy05 · 23/07/2021 06:22

Yes, definitely The Royle Family Cheryl's name was pronounced Ch-eryl. This was my first thought too.

Classica · 23/07/2021 09:45

Nope. Royle Family Cheryl had the SH pronunciation.

PurplePansy05 · 26/07/2021 16:47

I was convinced her mother was pronouncing it with a "Ch" not "Sh"! I'll have to re-watch.

EleanorOlephantisjustfine · 26/07/2021 16:52

It’s a hideous name for a current baby.

LostThings · 26/07/2021 16:58

I don't like it at all, sorry.

Terrazzo · 26/07/2021 17:10

I was thinking about this the other day, I have an aunt Cheryl and some people call her Cheryl and some Sheryl and I don’t know which it actually is meant to be 😁 so I wouldn’t.

Cindie943811A · 26/07/2021 17:15

A relative by marriage called her daughter Cheryl with a Ch sound — she had never seen the name spelt before and first saw it in a baby knitting book where the patterns are given baby names. She presumed Cheryl was a new name and not the same as the name usually pronounced Sheryl.
This was the only person I knew who prounced her name that way, though where I lived the name was extremely popular.
As the name is derived from the French term of endearment Cherie I think it’s a safe bet that the original and correct pronunciation is with a soft SH

midsomermurderess · 26/07/2021 17:28

I would say Ch eryl. I don't think it's wrong, anymore that the two different ways of pronouncing eg 'schedule', just perhaps less common.

blameitonthecaffeine · 26/07/2021 17:35

I've never heard Cheryl pronounced with a CH. But lots of people on here have so I'm sure it would be fine. It's unusual for a child now anyway so her peers will only know it as her name.

I don't like it personally but that's obviously not important!

I do really like Cherry and quite like Cherith.

FunnyWonder · 26/07/2021 17:40

I'm in NI and most people pronounce it with a ch sound like cherry. So, tell your friend to move to NI and there won't be any confusionGrinGrin

HeyGirlHeyBoy · 26/07/2021 17:46

Wouldn't pick it. Knew a CHeryl and it was usually pronounced Churl

Pogostemon · 26/07/2021 21:07

I think Cheryl would more likely be friends with Michelle, Kerry, Leanne, Joanne, Amanda and, of course, Louise

I’m an Amanda and I had absolutely no friends with any of those names! I think you must be mistaking me for Mandy. Grin

TommyShelby · 26/07/2021 22:34

Church chapel cheese children and chocolate. And Cheryl. With a Ch! Grin

Otherwise call them Sheryl.

A good name though - probably due a revival

woodfort · 27/07/2021 11:16

@Classica @PurplePansy05 this is too funny. I am also utterly convinced that someone called her Ch-eryl… maybe it’s a classic example of others not respecting the way the family choose to pronounce the name..

CakesOfVersailles · 27/07/2021 11:36

I am very surprised to see everyone talking about "CH-eryls." Every single Cheryl I have ever met pronounces it with a "sh" sound. I also can't think of hearing about any celebrities or characters who use the "ch" noise.

Also all the Cheryls I know are at least 50 now. I don't think it's a bad name but I would be very surprised to meet a baby Cheryl.
