Which baby names would you use if you didn't have to consider connotations, public perception or fear of ridicule?

Strawberry(I love the sound but would never use it IRL.
Pepper(No idea why mine are food related.

For a boy.
Fox(That one is used I know)
Darwin
Sailor
Horatio

There's more but I've suddenly forgotten them.

What names would you use if you had complete freedom to choose?

Balthazar

Also Lucifer is a beautiful name but.... 😈

Puffalicious · 18/07/2021 01:55

Oh Serendipity is divine! One of my favourite words is serendipitous.

elp30 · 18/07/2021 02:32

When I was a child, I knew a girl called, "Cougar". (I'm from the US)

She told me that her 18-year-old father worked two jobs and was saving for his "dream" car, a late 60's Mercury Cougar. Then, his girlfriend told him about her unplanned pregnancy and he put his money towards their new family and future. He named her "Cougar" for that reason.

I've loved that story since the first time I heard it in 1978. Somewhere in the world is a 51-year-old Cougar. 😆

Legna (Angel backward)
Halo
Peony
Briar Rose

PurpleFlower1983 · 18/07/2021 08:15

Definitely Fox for a boy, I was a huge X-Files fan. Our little boy is imminently due and I’m big brave enough!

Kanaloa · 18/07/2021 08:38

I love that he put his ‘dream’ into his daughter it’s a lovely story. Don’t know if I’d mind be a 51yo Cougar though!

CaffiSaliMali · 18/07/2021 09:36

Iseult for me. I'd use it although there are other names I prefer. There's no way on earth DH would agree though!

I've always been quite fond of Hepzibah too (thanks to Carrie's War).

17caterpillars1mouse · 18/07/2021 10:05

I adore Wednesday for a girl but everybody would think Adams

Also love Pandora but obviously jewellery

Also a huge fan of virtue names but couldn't use ones I love like Charity, Clarity and Chastity. Innocence on a boy

For boys I love Camelot also like Lancelot but not Lance and Percival but not Percy. I also quite like Falcon but wouldn't do it to a child

Amdone123 · 18/07/2021 10:08

I was just going to say Wednesday. I love it.
For a boy I just love Blue.
I second Serendipity. That's fab.

Am laughing at the 51 year old Cougar. I think I'm on the fence with that one.

Puffalicious · 18/07/2021 11:23

My cousin in Canada has a Pandora- I love it whilst rest of the family think it's bonkers.

Laughing hard at Fox. I like it very much but DHs nickname is Fox as the wee one next door couldn't say Scott! He is a total fox in my eyes, so all good!Grin

35andThriving · 18/07/2021 14:57

Puffalicious - That's a sweet little nickname story Smile

35andThriving · 18/07/2021 15:06

Cherish for a girl.

Puffalicious · 18/07/2021 15:07

Thanks 35 it has just stuck!

Ifixfastjets · 18/07/2021 15:13

I think my dd would have made a good Avalon.
Bit late to change it for her now...

Willwebebuyingnumber11 · 18/07/2021 15:20

I know a Jet and a Clover

35andThriving · 18/07/2021 15:27

I like Laszlo which I gather is quite popular in Hungary. Given that it isn't a popular name here, and I have no Hungarian blood in me, I think I can class that as a brave choice. I think it's great. Smile

firstimemamma · 18/07/2021 15:28

Meadow

Terrazzo · 18/07/2021 15:30

Absolutely LOVE Holliday for a girl. I’m sure there are more but can’t think of them now!

Terrazzo · 18/07/2021 15:30

Oh Prairie is quite nice too.

Cowbells · 18/07/2021 15:34

Wulfric or Beck - both for boys. All my taste in girls' names is very ordinary. The wildest is Robyn which is hardly out there!

crumpet · 18/07/2021 15:36

I’ve known a Daffodil, Pansy and Pepa, also a Taiga, Redd, Dagan. They’ve all suited the people they were attached to.

wedswench · 18/07/2021 15:38

Definitely Tiger for a girl. Someone I loosely know has named her little girl tiger and I'm in awe

35andThriving · 18/07/2021 17:54

Also, I like Forest and Kester.

whatausername · 18/07/2021 18:38

Benedicte
Hortensia
Henrietta (somewhat 'clunky' for RL)
Frideswide
Lilith
Emerald (not out there but sometimes swing between it being okay and it being in the "Krystal Chantal" camp)

Augustus
Heathcliff (good name, arsehole but abused character)
Tiberius
Isambard

17caterpillars1mouse · 19/07/2021 09:32

Thought of some more I really like

Comfort
Tiger-lily

I really wanted Daffodil for a girl but nobody liked it (I wanted to nn her affectionate dilly-daff - possibly pregnancy hormones lol), then I wanted it as a mn but we gave dd an usual virtue name so decided to give her a more normal mn. I still regret not using it as a mn

I also like Tulip, Petunia, Lilac, Lavender, Magnolia and Petal, Marigold which I guess isn't so out there and sunflower - strictly mn and Rosehip but again mn only otherwise she'd just end up being called Rose / Rosie

Also love Hebe and would seriously consider it if I were to have a third girl
