Sienna and Ariana

We already have a Sienna, DH and I really love the name Ariana but I’m worried that the two names are too similar for siblings. Do you agree or am I making a big deal out of nothing.

Both gorgeous names and now way similar but they still go together.

RuthW · 11/07/2021 18:26

If you pronounce it Ari-arna it's fine but Ari-anna is too similar imo.

Bookaholic73 · 11/07/2021 18:27

I think it would be considered to be named after Ariana Grande.
As long as you don’t mind this, I’d say it’s fine.

Siennasmama · 11/07/2021 18:31

The Ariana Grande did bother me first time round which is why we ended up going with Sienna before but I’ve always regretted writing it off so quickly over that connection.

DH and I actually disagree over our favourite pronunciation so at the minute we don’t know how we would pronounce it.

I think they’re fine together to be honest. Is it the na sound at the end you think sounds too similar? You could also do Ariadne or Ariane perhaps.

CarpeVitam · 11/07/2021 19:31

Sienna is beautiful and I love Adriana, so similar 😉

MissyB1 · 11/07/2021 19:41

Sounds too much of a mouthful to me sorry.

Chilldonaldchill · 11/07/2021 21:13

Too similar for me.

Lalliella · 11/07/2021 22:46

Gorgeous and not at all similar. Go really nicely together. Don’t go for the Ari-arna pronunciation though, no-one would comply with that (plus it’s a bit pretentious).

Kanaloa · 11/07/2021 22:52

I think it’s absolutely fine. They have matching endings but the sounds of both names are very different.

DramaAlpaca · 11/07/2021 22:59

Fine together. Go for it.

PumpkinKlNG · 11/07/2021 23:36

It’s fine

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 11/07/2021 23:46

If you are pronouncing it "Ah -ree- AR -na" (with the emphasis on the AR, then I think it's fine as it sounds different enough to Sienna. But Sienna and "Ah -re -anna" are more of a mouthful when said together imo.

C0RINNA · 11/07/2021 23:46

I disagree - they are too similar. What other names are on your shortlist OP?

ChilliChoco · 11/07/2021 23:51

What about Arianne? French and therefore chic Wink

Honeybeebloom · 12/07/2021 00:29

Why are people saying that there is an ar-ree-arna pronunciation? It's an Italian name and there is no such pronunciation. If it's said that way it's because someone has mispronounced it.

MayThelock · 12/07/2021 10:40

Have you considered Selena?

wishing3 · 12/07/2021 10:43

You can spell it Arianna to avoid the connection but I reckon I’d go Arianne then you can decide if you want to call her Arianna as a nickname maybe?

Geamhradh · 12/07/2021 10:45

Arianna is Italian. I believe Ariana (which has the longer /a:/ pronunciation is Hispanic in origin. Arianna would be pronounced more like Sienna (though that's not an Italian name) The town of Siena has a longer /e/
userrnamemn · 12/07/2021 10:52

I don’t think they are too similar and both are beautiful names. I do think they’re a bit of a mouthful together, but it’s only you who will be shouting them at the same time 😂

I know both Arianas and Ariannas in Italy. The difference would be in the pronunciation of the final ana/anna sound. Ana would be said as you would imagine and Anna has more emphasis on the n so like an-na, pronouncing both ns. As you say Sienna isn't an Italian name but if it was ut would also be said with the double n, while the town Siena is just pronounced with the one n.

Yes, I know. I'm in Italy.
LewishamMum · 12/07/2021 11:06

I don't think they are too similar, but I'm very anti 4 syllable names. Basically no-one is going to be arsed to say all 4 syllables and so they end up being called something else; I think it makes sense to just call them something else to begin with.

Siennasmama · 12/07/2021 12:07

Thanks everyone for your replies.

@C0RINNA we are struggling on other names aswell. Sienna was almost an Evelyn but since then we now know of about four Evelyns so it’s sort of put us off. We do like Savannah and Sofia but would rather avoid having matching initials, DH loves Millie, I’m not a fan but like Mollie which DH doesn’t like as much, and we both like Faith but not sure if we love it as much as some of the other names on the list.

OP posts:
C0RINNA · 12/07/2021 13:24

I didn’t know that Evelyn was back in - I don’t know any under 50 and there’s none in my kids schools. I think it’s a beautiful name but I’m not sure it works with sienna .

I like

Eloise
Isobel
Imogen
Felicity
Charlotte
Scarlett
Esther

I think another 3 or a least a 2 syllable name is better with Sienna and names that DONT end with A sound . Which makes it hard as so many girls names end like this.

I know two longer names makes it more of a mouthful. But you will end shouting “ girls “ anyway , rather than “ Sienna and Charlotte, your dinners ready “. 😬
