What are your thoughts on the name Opal? I like it's vintage feel and the fact I've never met one

Like.
There's a character with that name in a Jacqueline Wilson book

ApolloandDaphne · 09/07/2021 08:31

@Nitgel

Older people will sing 'made to make your mouth water' everytvery time the child introduces themselves.
It's what I sang when I saw the name in the thread heading. The jingle is seared on the brain of every person of a certain age!

I like Opal. I think it could pick up in popularity in the not to distant future. And I wouldn’t worry about people singing at her Hmm Most people have enough restraint not to sing the Fireman Sam theme tune at every Sam they meet.

coulditbecominghome · 09/07/2021 08:45

DH is an Oliver, no one has even broken into "Oliver! Oliver! Never before has a boy wanted more!" upon an introduction.

Chilldonaldchill · 09/07/2021 08:45

I don't dislike it.
I was a kid when Opal Fruits were around and I didn't think of them or the jungle.
I have actually met a couple of Opals - both old ladies from Cockney backgrounds. They were sweet.
I think it's definitely a name that people will recognise but that isn't common. It's not quite my cup of tea but I definitely think it's usable.

coulditbecominghome · 09/07/2021 08:47

Wonder how Caroline's find it at the moment with the football fever!

LittleBlackCat22 · 09/07/2021 08:50

I love it. It’s my husbands grandmothers name.

Only if they're twats. I'm not young, but like most other people have never teased a child about their name.

Maybe so, but you'd surely not make a point of it to a child?

And as for Opal as a name, it's... OK.

Agree, only a twat would do that. A DF has a baby named Thomas, I can honestly say that I've never thought of singing the Thomas the Tank Theme or being unkind about any of the names my DFs have chosen.

BeepBoopBop · 09/07/2021 11:02

My mouth is watering now.... bloody advert

Phantasmo · 09/07/2021 11:08

I didn't know the opal gemstone was considered bad luck. I've never really liked them though. That iridescent shimmeriness doesn't appeal to me.

Wouldn't be wild about it as a name, OP.

PattyPan · 09/07/2021 11:25

I don’t really like it. Opal gemstones are ugly and it also makes me think of Opel cars.
I grew up with starburst rather than Opal fruits but I still know that’s what they used to be called fwiw.

thenonsensepotter · 09/07/2021 11:28

Its a beautiful name but they're meant to be bad luck unless they're your birthstone.

Beamur · 09/07/2021 11:31

I was very nearly an Opal! They were my Mum's favourite gem stones. But my Dad vetoed it in favour of something very dull and less sparkly Grin

Kokeshi123 · 09/07/2021 13:54

I really like it. I don't think the old "Opal Fruits" reference matters any more.

TopTabby · 09/07/2021 14:07

Once looked after a lovely little girl called Opal, it was around 25 years ago so I think it's very unusual but not at all made up which is a good basis for a name IMO.

35andThriving · 09/07/2021 20:49

I like it.

21Bee · 09/07/2021 20:51

There is an Opal in one of our baby classes at the moment, I’ve never thought of sweets or cars when talking to her.

VenusClapTrap · 09/07/2021 21:08

It should be nice, but it just isn’t.

35andThriving · 09/07/2021 21:21

I think lillies are associated with funerals, aren't they? Pearls are associated with tears, and it is supposedly unlucky to wear pearls on your wedding day (I did). People still use Lily and Pearl as names. All these superstitions are daft anyway.

SunSeaSurfGin · 09/07/2021 21:22

@rattlemehearties

It's a car...
This and sweets

Nice stone makes pretty jewellery though

Exactly.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 09/07/2021 21:50

Not keen on the sound personally - it's a bit like Beryl. I can see Emerald becoming more popular though thanks to Emerald Fennell and the way you can use the more common nn Emmy for it.
