I love it.

EmergencyHydrangea · 09/07/2021 01:55

I love it. If I'd had a boy I would have called him that

veryblearyeyed · 09/07/2021 01:57

That’s interesting, @Vallmo47, my name is as English and straightforward as you can get (or close, not quite John Smith level) and so many people have trouble with it even if English is their first language and culture. My first and last name are both widely known for one reason or another. I won’t say why or it would be very outing!

veryblearyeyed · 09/07/2021 02:01

People can be idiots about names though. When DD was born the dr doing the rounds told me I’d given her the wrong name and should have called her (slightly different name). She actually wrote DD’s middle name on the chart instead!

Vallmo47 · 09/07/2021 02:05

Aww, it might be the case you need to spell either way @veryblearyeyed. It’s just my experience of wanting to choose a Scandi name and I didn’t think “Linn-eaah” was that difficult to say. I know how I feel when I (most days) have to explain my surname, spell it and discuss where I’m from, why I don’t have a strong accent etc etc. Seeing as I’ve chosen this country as my home for the past 18 years, it would be lovely to only discuss and explain myself when absolutely necessary. People are trying to be friendly I know and they don’t truuuuly care either … but that kind of makes it worse in a way as I’m forever making the same polite chitchat and neither of us want to, if that makes sense. 😂

How about Soren as a middle name and something a bit more traditional - or vice versa so your son can choose?

Mind you, you need to be 100% happy and that’s what counts.

veryblearyeyed · 09/07/2021 02:10

I sympathize, @Vallmo47, one of my names leads to an obvious joke/reference, and everyone thinks they’re the first to say it Hmm

Vallmo47 · 09/07/2021 02:13

@veryblearyeyed That’s so god damn rude I have no words. Good luck finding your perfect name combo if you haven’t already. 👍💗

veryblearyeyed · 09/07/2021 02:13

Just to derail a bit further, I know a little Linnea (pronounced Linn é uh), but her parents are both biologists so maybe their circle is more familiar with it.

ChickenSchnitzel · 09/07/2021 02:16

I know a few Sorrens (Scotland), I think its a lovely name.

Unreasonabubble · 09/07/2021 03:25

Okay... If you do your research and Goggle the name, it means a lot of negative things like severe, strict, serious. Do your really want your little one growing up with that burden?

Buttons294749 · 09/07/2021 09:00

I used to work in a team with loads of Scandinavians and there were 3 of them plus loads of clients with that name do assume popular in those places. Most of them were pronounced soren as opposed to søren - assume so the brits could pronounce!

Nice name tho

ILoveShula · 09/07/2021 09:00

I'd have thought that the Ø was more of an issue than the meaning.

I really like the name Åse for a girl but wouldn't use it. For a start, I'm not swedish and because it isn't practical.

PattyPan · 09/07/2021 11:29

I agree people in the U.K. won’t know how to pronounce ø. I know someone whose surname is Sørensen and it gets butchered.

Netflxio · 09/07/2021 11:30

Reminds me of SORN when you take your vehicle off the road. Not a fan sorry.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 09/07/2021 11:31

I know one, it's a lovely name.

SingingSands · 09/07/2021 11:36

I like it. Cool name.

Vallmo47 · 09/07/2021 20:16

😂 The biologist reference doesn’t surprise me as its origin is Carl von Linne.

Honestly do it if you like it, I just think your son will be pronouncing it a lot and explaining himself.

FindingMeno · 09/07/2021 20:20

I like it.
I imagine a short middle name with it.

MargaretFraggle · 09/07/2021 20:21

I like it but to me it is a German or Scandi name, not for someone in the UK with no links. Each to their own though.

safariboot · 09/07/2021 20:24

Malt loaf.

Cameleongirl · 09/07/2021 20:28

I'm really surprised at some of the responses, my DD has a Scandinavian name and we have no cultural/family links at all! Someone I like and admire has the same name so that influenced my choice, plus the meaning is lovely.

DS has a friend called Soren, I've never thought twice about it, I don't think they have Scandinavian connections, although I could be wrong. I expect the O should be a different character but I've never seen it spelt that way here in the US.

feellikeanalien · 09/07/2021 20:28

Immediately thought of Charlie and Lola and Soren Lorenson.

GiveMyHeadPeaceffs · 09/07/2021 20:41

I have a Sören and it's not pronounced the same as soreen. I sometimes think MN is fixated with a certain type of name. Hmm I love Sören and think it's a strong name plus I have Swedish connections.

Middlesboroughgirl · 09/07/2021 20:44

I've never heard of it and thought of the loaf straightaway. I think it is quite nice and the type of name everyone would get used to really quickly after the initial 'loaf' reaction.

LittleRen · 09/07/2021 20:45

I have a soren, it suits him perfectly. So many people comment on it in a positive way.
