I love this name but have such mixed comments please tell me it is not terrible..

Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

I like it, but it's a family name so it has meaning to me. I've seen harsh comments about it too - not sure why, tbh. I like that it's less common.

DisgruntledPelican · 03/07/2021 19:20

I know a couple of toddlers called Francis, but one is a family name and they’re both devoutly Catholic.

It’s caught between timeless and being unfashionably old-fashioned at the moment.

Eleoura · 03/07/2021 19:23

I think of pope Francis and would assume you are very religious. Not a fan, but its not my child. Frank is often the nn, which is also awful.

Schrutesbeets · 03/07/2021 19:25

There's definitely nothing wrong with it, but I don't LOVE it.
Its a nice, wholesome, classic name. I'd go with it if you love it, I can't imagine anyone batting an eyelid.

MissMissTorrance · 03/07/2021 19:25

Awful. Is this for a boy or girl?
Either way it's really not to my taste.
Looks and sounds ugly and Fran is just urgh.

DucklingChicken · 03/07/2021 19:31

Don't like Francis, but think Frank is awesome

Lifeinabeautifullight · 03/07/2021 19:32

I love it..both for girl and boy!

haveibeencaughtout · 03/07/2021 19:33

Love it!

whatmattersisthatyoulove · 03/07/2021 19:45

Love it!

Classica · 03/07/2021 19:49

I like it but think it's probably a marmite name. Quite a Catholic name. But Francis of Assisi was very kind to the animals and Pope Francis seems a decent sort, so could be worse associations!

Tbh though I knew a really hot Francis so that's what makes me look on it favourably.

Comedycook · 03/07/2021 19:50

A bit wet

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 03/07/2021 19:50

I have a Frances Smile

ItsReallyOnlyMe · 03/07/2021 20:12

I like it.

He can be Francis, Frankie or Frank.

I would bear in mind that the north and south do pronounce this differently. Francis vs Frarncis - so it depends if you like the alternative as well.

PrivateParty · 03/07/2021 20:14

Nope. Don't like it.

FayeFayeFayeFayeFaye · 03/07/2021 20:27

I think it’s really ugly sounding and old fashioned.

Germolenequeen · 03/07/2021 20:38

As a Frances I'm very upset with some of these comments 🙁
I've always loved my name but only very close friends and family get to call me Fran.
I think Frankie is nice as a diminutive for a boy 🙂

Clear235 · 03/07/2021 20:53

@Germolenequeen oh I know it is really disliked for some reason.
I prefer Frankie as a nickname for Francesca for a girl

I think people are more accepting of Frances for a girl than Francis for a boy.
ZenNudist · 03/07/2021 20:59

It's great. Nn frankie

DramaAlpaca · 03/07/2021 21:00

I don't mind Francis at all. However I hate all possible diminutives so it's middle name territory only for me. I feel the same about Patrick and Joseph.

GrumpyMiddleAgedWoman · 03/07/2021 21:01

I like it, but I have form for liking names that are unpopular on MN.

GlitchStitch · 03/07/2021 21:01

I love it, would have been DD's name if she'd been a boy. I also love Frankie.

OverTheWater · 03/07/2021 21:01

Nice name, does have strong Catholic overtones imo. Which is not necessarily an issue.

There are a fair few little Frank's and Frankies about atm so it doesn't feel wildly unusual. (I like Francis more than those)

Germolenequeen · 03/07/2021 21:02

@Classica true

Flingoo · 03/07/2021 21:03

We have one. His name is (different name) Francis (our surname) but we call him Frank/Francis/Frankie

He suits it
