A nickname for James

I absolutely love the name James.
DH has a young and pretty distant cousin with the same name, (we don't see them often, so not too fussed about trouble with "stealing" the name), and the whole family uses the nickname Jimmy.
I don't know anyone called James, so Jimmy as a nickname threw me a bit. It turns out I can't get on with it as a nickname at all, to the point I'd avoid using the name.
I'm not against nicknames, I actually love Jamie as a casual version of James.
Anyone who knows a James, is that a common nickname? And if we used Jamie as an alternative to Jimmy, would that catch on?

I’d be surprised if people start calling him Jim or Jimmy unless you do that first

Bicnod · 24/06/2021 22:14

My James is mainly James, Jamie, JimboJam or Mamie (as his little sister couldn't say Jamie when she was teeny and it stuck...)

I know a few other Jameses who are all just James.

Skyla2005 · 24/06/2021 22:28

James's

aibubaby · 24/06/2021 22:49

All the Jameses I know are Jim or Jimmy if they have a nickname at all, although most don't - they tend to go by James.

I don't know any Jamies who are using it as a nickname for James, they were named Jamie, so if I met a Jamie I definitely wouldn't assume they were James.

Dp is James to me, but parents siblings and relations and old friends all call him Jamie.

We had a weird original scenario when I first met his family as he had told me James but they all use Jamie. So I kind of crossed to Jamie if they were there and they sort of got confused too, like using James when I was there if they remembered. Now we have all reverted to the name he seems to want us all to use so I am still in the James section! along with anyone else he has met in the last 15 years!

@ItsallBollocksanyway

I wouldnt consider Jamie to be a nickname for James at all so I wouldn't see that as catching on as a nickname. I know a couple of James and most are known as just James with only one being called Jim. Only his mother calls him James, to the rest of the world he is Jim! Most nicknames that stick are given by family so if you don't like Jimmy then stamp that out early on, or given by friends at school, I don't think many kids would know Jimmy as a nickname for James these days so you should be ok.
I am that mother! I love the name James and that's exactly why I called him that but my opinion doesn't count 😁

All the Jameses I know get called James. I don’t know any Jimmys. Thankfully. It’s not a good name. James is classic and timeless though, it’s a great name. Not so keen on Jamie, I think it’s a bit babyish.

Midnightballerina · 25/06/2021 01:13

I have a James & he is called James by everyone (except me I call him Jim bob he hates it but I'm his mum so he let's it slide)

LewishamMum · 25/06/2021 09:07

I think Jim and Jimmy are old man abbreviations. I love James and could happily pick it; don't like Jim or Jimmy but don't think it would be a problem. Just tell people you don't like the Jimmy Saville association!

dancingindungarees · 25/06/2021 09:10

My DH gets Jamesie we are in NI. His father gets Jimbo.

BertieBotts · 25/06/2021 09:16

If there's already a James nn Jimmy in the family it's a perfect excuse to ask people not to use that shortening.

I agree that Jim /Jimmy is a common nickname for older Jameses. Younger ones tend not to use that.

IeatPotNoodles · 25/06/2021 13:56

@Carrotsoupispoo

We call ours Jammy Dodger. It’s one of those names where you can get away with pretty much anything as a nickname
My cousin James was known as Jammy Dodger when he was younger too GrinGrinGrin
notawittyname1954 · 25/06/2021 17:36

notawittyname1954 · 25/06/2021 17:37

Readysoon · 25/06/2021 17:47

How about:

Jamesee (pronounced James e)
Jam

SuperMonkeys · 25/06/2021 18:05

We have a very young James.
He gets called:
Jim
Jimbob
Jem
JimJam
Jamesy

Handsnotwands · 25/06/2021 20:34

My DH is a James

Jamie to family and childhood friends
H / Jim Bob/ Jimmy boo/ Jim / jimmy/ surname to teenage friends depending on their phase

Jim to the old guys the old guys in the pub

James to me

It’s a lovely name. Adaptable and suitable to each stage of a life. It just works seamlessly

Kneel · 25/06/2021 20:44

JimBob, Jamesina-Belle, Jam, JimBob-tastic, Jammy. All nicknames I call my James. Grin

He's always just James to friends and the rest of our family. I don't think Jimmy is a common nickname between kids nowadays.
Everyone has an Uncle Jimmy but I think they'll all be Uncle James' soon enough!

Jamie is definitely a James nickname and I'm surprised more than one person didn’t think so.

It'll catch on very quick if you do decide to use it as a nickname, no worries there.
