A nickname for James

I absolutely love the name James.
DH has a young and pretty distant cousin with the same name, (we don't see them often, so not too fussed about trouble with "stealing" the name), and the whole family uses the nickname Jimmy.
I don't know anyone called James, so Jimmy as a nickname threw me a bit. It turns out I can't get on with it as a nickname at all, to the point I'd avoid using the name.
I'm not against nicknames, I actually love Jamie as a casual version of James.
Anyone who knows a James, is that a common nickname? And if we used Jamie as an alternative to Jimmy, would that catch on?

Most Jameses I know are just James. Although I’m not sure why people seem surprised that Jamie is a nickname for James? I think Jimmy is only really used of the parents or child specifically want it to be and start it off.

Willwebebuyingnumber11 · 24/06/2021 18:53

I know 3 James’

2 are James and one is Jam or Jammy. Don’t know why, I met him as an adult, but James doesn’t suit him. He’s a bit of a Jack the lad.

12BottlesOfVintageChampagne · 24/06/2021 18:54

I once knew a Jem

itssquidstella · 24/06/2021 18:56

My brother is James. We called him Jamesy when he was little but he's mostly just James.

PinusSylvestris · 24/06/2021 18:56

Jamie is definitely a possible nickname for James.
It's like saying Bobbie isn't a nickname for Robert. 🤷

DH’s cousin is a James and is known to the entire family as Jim-Jam Paddiwack despite being a 6 foot four army sergeant.

Nicknames stick you may intend Jamie but something entirely different sticks.

Either way it’s a lovely name that is quite underused at the moment!

sleepyhead · 24/06/2021 18:58

The Jameses I know (aged 2-98) are: James, Jim, Jimmy, Jamie (most of the young ones), Hamish (from Seumas, Gaelic for James).

bringadish · 24/06/2021 18:58

@Carrotsoupispoo me too.

I call mine Dodge Grin

SmednotaSmoo · 24/06/2021 18:59

We have and have had a lot of James in our family, so it was an obvious name for DC
Jim
Jimmy
Jamie
Jim again.

Mine is a James. Apart from when he’s Jamesy to me, or Jam Donut to his friends.

Just call him James and the names will flow..

(And of course Jamie is a nick name for James!)

plinkplinkfizzer · 24/06/2021 18:59

@Fruityfriday

I like Jamesie
As in Rab's mate Jamesie with the can of Tennents in the pocket . No .
CormoranStrike · 24/06/2021 19:01

Jas pronounced jazz is a common one round here, as is Jamie.

Jimmy is very dated to me, I do t know any young jimmies or Jims.

JustMeAndWheatley · 24/06/2021 19:01

My nephew has always been known as Jimbo

Ginflinger · 24/06/2021 19:04

It's a brilliant name and a totally legit nickname. We have so far dodged 'Tommy' as a nickname for Thomas (really don't like it at all) and everyone calls him Tom, so go for it!

HerMammy · 24/06/2021 19:05

Pp really don’t know Jamie/ Jimmy are derivations of James??
James, Jamie, Jim, Jimmy, Jamesie, Jimbo 🤣
Obviously Jamie has become a name on its own but. it to not realise it comes from James 🤷🏼‍♀️

Kjr33 · 24/06/2021 19:08

Jammers (might just be a local one?)

Wbeezer · 24/06/2021 19:09

We used to go as far as Jamesie Jim-Bob when DS2 was very little and cute.

ItsallBollocksanyway · 24/06/2021 19:09

I stand corrected about the Jamie connection. I've just never heard it as that and always considered as a name in its own right as opposed to the likes of Jim/Jimmy which I'd usually presume they were named James originally.

toastofthetown · 24/06/2021 19:10

Every James around my age (late twenties) is either James or Jamie. I don't know any Jim/Jimmys my age, but I know several adult Jamies.

sugarapplelane · 24/06/2021 19:10

My DH is a James, but always known as Jamie to friends and family

Maladicta · 24/06/2021 19:10

My 17yo James has always just been that. Some of his friends called him Jamie for a bit but he prefers James. Any other names he's called are by his mates in sports teams where none of them are known by their actual name.

anothernamereally · 24/06/2021 19:10

The James I know went by Jamie as a child but James once he went to secondary

Oncewassmith · 24/06/2021 19:11

I know a James that's has a nickname of Jonah (have no idea of the origin but love it as a name/nickname)

ForeverFloating · 24/06/2021 19:11

My friend James is a Jamie, my BIL James is a Jimmy, seems to vary

resm · 24/06/2021 19:14

I have a cousin who has only ever got Jamie, but is James on his birth certificate. I'd say that's more common than Jim/Jimmy for younger generations.

Sally872 · 24/06/2021 19:14

I don't think it matters what ds1 is called unless one child was something extremely unusual and the other extremely popular.

But Jamie and a commonly used royal name will be fine.

Jamie could definitely be a nickname for James, but less control over nicknames so a but risky. You can insist people call him his proper name, nicknames are more flexible I would feel a bit high maintenence insisting people use Jamie not Jamsie etc.
