Thoughts on Kit, short for Christopher? Christopher would only be on the BC. Is it a bit of an eyebrow raiser, how different the names are? An thoughts appreciated!

I really like it.

CandleWick4 · 22/06/2021 12:45

I love it. We won’t be having any more DC but if we did and I had a boy I would be using this. Christopher on the birth certificate and Kit as a nn. I think it’s great.

5566rfghh · 22/06/2021 12:54

Isn't Kit a normal, quite common, nn for Christopher?

5566rfghh · 22/06/2021 12:56

Not saying it's a bad thing 😆, I do like Kit although I don't love Christopher, but I'm pretty sure it's a fairly regular nn and definitely not an eyebrow raiser!

timeisnotaline · 22/06/2021 12:57

I think it’s super cute. There’s a Dick Francis with twins Kit and Holly , where Kit is short for Christmas. I always loved it Grin

stellarfox · 22/06/2021 13:10

I think Kit is a normal nickname for Christopher, but people are using Kit on its own anyway!

ClaudiaWankleman · 22/06/2021 13:11

It's as normal a nickname for Christopher as Chris is, although less common. I only know one, compared to several Chris.

SmallPrawnEnergy · 22/06/2021 13:34

This is the 2nd time I’ve seen this today and never ever knew that Kit was a nn for Christopher.

Personally, I don’t understand why MN is so obsessed with forcing nn or liking a nn but insisting it has a “full” name. If you like kit call the kid kit, if you like Christopher call it Christopher. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Mumdiva99 · 22/06/2021 13:50

Just call the child Kit if that's what you want to call him. No need for a longer name on the BC.

FelicityPike · 22/06/2021 13:53

Common as muck these days, both as a nickname for Christopher and as a name on its own.
Common as in very popular not “chavvy” (although it might become so).

BuffySummersReportingforSanity · 22/06/2021 13:55

If I had had another, they'd have been Katherine if a girl, Christopher if a boy, Kit either way. So I like it a lot.

I disagree with the "give the nickname as a name". I much prefer making the formal name a longer classic name so the child can choose their own variation, or revert to the original, in later life if preferred.

ILoveShula · 22/06/2021 13:58

It used to be a bit different but it's very popular now. The Rooneys have one.

Not great.

Violetlavenders · 22/06/2021 14:04

Christopher naturally shortens to Chris. I like the name.

Kit sounds like short for Kitten or Kitkat Grin

Im not keen on kit - sports kit etc.

Yes I think so, but maybe OP has never actually met one?
SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 22/06/2021 14:12

I love it as a shortening for Christopher. One of the dses is called Christopher, and I really wanted (and intended) to use Kit as his nickname - sadly when he was born, he just wasn't a Kit - it didn't suit him at all.

I didn't want to use Chris as a nickname - Christopher is a family name, and my FIL is shortened to Chris - and I wanted to differentiate him from my ds - so he was Christopher until his mid teens, when his friends started calling him Chris, and he took it on.

We happily call him Chris now - so I am doing better than my mum - I have a name that can be shortened, and I much prefer the shortened name (most people know me by it) - but mum refuses to use it. She 'can't bring herself' to use my chosen name. Hmm

MysteriousMonkey · 22/06/2021 14:28

Yet. Love Kit. Always makes me think of The Boy Next Door by Enid Blyton (I think that's the right book)

ScribblyBaller · 22/06/2021 15:02

I feel like there are lots of little Kits around at the moment. I doubt an eyebrow will so much as twitch.

kmini · 23/06/2021 22:38

Thank you for all your replies. For those that know Kits, do you know more than one?

I personally know 3. 1 a 50 odd year old and 2 under 5’s.
Then I know OF (never met them) another 4 under 2’s.

Roselilly36 · 24/06/2021 08:23

I love the name Christopher,I have known quite a few over the years, they have always used nn Chris though. Not known a Kit, if you intend to call your DS Kit, then I would just call him Kit. I don’t know, any Kit’s. I quite like it, but wasn’t the car in Knight Rider call KITT, giving my age away there!

I’d put Kit on his birth certificate if he’s never going to be called Christopher.
It’s a nice name on its own.

RuthW · 24/06/2021 12:20

Kit is a standardised shortening of Christopher. Lovely name

Marcipex · 24/06/2021 12:24

It’s okay, but I think I’d use Kristopher as the registered name.

Lindy2 · 24/06/2021 12:29

I really like it. I'd do exactly as you plan Christopher on bc. Kit as the used name.

To me it's a pretty cool name without being too try hard. William/Will is also another formal name/nick name combination I like.
