My best friend wants to call her baby boy Tyga (after an American rapper apparantly). Never heard of him but I just hate the name...
Tbh I think it sounds really chavy.
I'm really surprised as my friend herself isn't chavy lol, she's from a very middle class background and has a professional career.
She asked me for my honest opinion of it so I just told her I really don't like it. I'm more into traditional "solid" names like James, Daniel, Stephen etc. Tyga just sounds "made up" and well, tbh, rubbish.
What do others think of this name?

I always assumed that wasn't his real name, just his rapper name, like Eminem, 50 cent, etc. So a bit weird in that sense.

OverByYer · 17/06/2021 21:03

I’d think you don’t know how to spell Tiger

3beesinmybonnet · 17/06/2021 21:09

My first thought was Tyger Drew Honey from Outnumbered, whose parents are famous porn stars Ben Dover and Linzi Drew, as previous posters have already mentioned.

What if he grows up to be a bank manager or an accountant?

Tangled22 · 17/06/2021 21:16

Tyga is best known fo dating Kylie Jenner when she was between 14-17, and he was in his 20s. Does your friend know about the Kardashian / pervy link? I would mention it to her, to try and gently persuade her to pick a different name.

Ohpulltheotherone · 17/06/2021 21:17

I actually liked Tiger for a boy back in the day. The rapper Tyga wasn’t a thing then.

I mean either way it doesn’t really matter if you like it or not.

Is “chav” still a thing? Aren’t we past that?

Paula Yates called her girl Tiger-Lily 20 years ago.

EmmaGrundyForPM · 17/06/2021 21:22

I have a friend whose 7 year old ds is called Tiger. It really suits him and it's a great name. I'm.not so keen on the alternative spelling but each to their own.

Honestly, though, there's a lot of Katie Hopkins style judging on this thread.

Ohpulltheotherone · 17/06/2021 21:22

@SleepingStandingUp

Well it's one of those. Would I? No. W/C Mom calling Tyga in Lidl? People will think it's chavvy and made up. M/C Mom calling Tyga in Waitrose? Much more likely to get away with it being interesting. U/C Mom calling Tyga across the stables? Quirky and fun!
Exactly this.

There are tons of Henry’s and Olivia’s running wild in the aisles of Lidi these days. No one assumes they are middle class do they.

A name changes within different environments.

I’d encourage her to at least spell it Tiger just to step away from the direct connection to someone in popular culture who may or may not end up being a good association

roobicoobi · 17/06/2021 21:23

Paula Yates called her DD Heavenly Hiraani Tiger Lily

The dude from outnumbered is Lindzi James Tyger

Neither of them have a feline first name. They may use the name, but it's a middle name for both.

BunnyRuddington · 17/06/2021 21:25

*Hmm. So it's not your choice of name, but your friends? And you're on here canvassing for an opinion? Having been derogatory about it?

Not on*

Exactly my thoughts. Not a nice thing to do at all.

QueSeraSarah · 17/06/2021 21:26

Silly

inmyslippers · 17/06/2021 21:26

This cannot be for real

MakkaPakkas · 17/06/2021 21:36

Islington parents was my first thought

Hufflepuffsunite · 17/06/2021 21:37

I wouldn't use it, but then I would never use Stephen or Daniel either. None of them are my cup of tea!

Hallyup6 · 17/06/2021 21:40

Chavvy and illiterate.

TuvoknotSpock · 17/06/2021 22:55

How about Michael or Ray (tyga's real first/middle names)? 🤣🤣

But no I wouldn't name my child after an adult man who groomed a teenager.

HoppingHamster · 17/06/2021 23:00

Bit of an idiot, delusions of cool, utterly self-absorbed. Reminds me of a long lost colleague who called their kid Rocky, those three words describe her perfectly too.

MuggleStudiesResearchProject · 17/06/2021 23:41

There's the Irish name Tadhg/Tighe which sounds a bit like Tiger, although I have so say I would find it a bit odd if used by someone with no Irish ancestry. Miles better than Tyga though.

Chilldonaldchill · 17/06/2021 23:57

I would assume they were illiterate.
I don't like Tyger but at least it's got some credibility as a word (William Blake etc). Tyga is just horrific.
I'd also assume it was a girl as that ending in a misspelling is normally an attempt to feminise a word.

Kokeshi123 · 18/06/2021 00:04

I would assume the parents were young and had a very low education level.

DalPalak · 18/06/2021 03:33

Well, it's just stupid, isn't it? And all the moreso because the namesake is Tyga the rapper. I mean, why him??

I wouldn't be bothered by Tiger though.

IAmDaveTheSerialShagger · 18/06/2021 04:21

Mumsnet snobbery at its worst Hmm

MirandaBlu · 18/06/2021 05:01

Are they religious? Apparently in the rapper's case it's an acronym for "thank you, God, always". Depending on the local accent whereever they live, people hesring it will probably think it's "Tiger" anyway.

LongTimeMammaBear · 18/06/2021 05:11

When I see made up names or silly names, I often think how sad for the child. Realised some years ago that a number of people form ideas about the person with the name not the parent. First time was about 20 years ago when we had a new tax director start at work (large multinational). He had one of those make up names. People were snickering before they even met him. He wort was when a new legal director started and she had a very frilly sounding name. No one took her serious. She sadly often ha little battles to do just because of preconceived notions of her name Terribly wrong thing of these coworkers to do.

garlictwist · 18/06/2021 05:46

Tyger honey dew whatsit is a stupid name. Sorry, but it is. It doesn't suit him. (Would it suit anyone?).

I guess Blake was on it with the whole Tyger thing so you could argue it's vaguely classical.

Tyga is even worse.

RickOShay · 18/06/2021 05:56

I like it Smile
