Help with Welsh Baby Boy Names - Final three

Due in 7 weeks and know we are having a boy. DH is Welsh so going for a Welsh name, and we both have Celtic names anyway.

Shortlist is:

Ellis
Ifor
Harri

For ages I was fairly certain we were going to go for Ellis, but now I’m worrying I say it with a slight lisp, even though I don’t have a lisp! I love Ifor but only reservation is our surname, which when put together with Ifor ends up being the name of a trailer brand...but then maybe not that many people would be familiar with it?! Harri is sweet but I think perhaps too popular for our liking when you think most people will assume it’s Harry/there may we’ll be lots of Harry’s his age. Thoughts?!

I really like Elis.

Ifor would never have his name pronounced correctly. I'm another one who gets annoyed by all the incorrectly pronounced names. So many Dylans in my English town and all of them pronounced Dillan. Why not just use the English spelling in the first place??

CalonGaled · 16/06/2021 13:23

@CaffiSaliMali, Try saying R and H at exactly the same time.

Back to the OP's three names. The more I think about it, the more I like Ifor. I know lots of young men and boys called Elis and Harri/Hari, both probably have peaked but Ifor seems fresh.

MintGreenLife · 17/06/2021 19:32

Thanks everyone ☺️ I’ve taken Harri off my list now, so will be between Elis and Ifor x

CalonGaled Perhaps have different dialects so pronounce it slightly differently 🤷🏻‍♀️ The o at the end of Ianto sounds like tor, without a hard r, to me

OP personally I would go with Elis 😁

SemperIdem · 19/06/2021 00:13

@tiredanddangerous Dylan Thomas the go to for many when they think of the name and he actively encouraged the “dillan” pronunciation

SecondCityShark · 19/06/2021 01:00

Osian (pronounced 'Osh-ann') and Idris are my favourite Welsh boys names.

Ellis is my fave out of your options.

jodiebrook · 19/06/2021 06:35

I love Ellis Smile

Emergency Q - baby boy was born at 37 weeks and we have called him Elis - I thought that the Welsh spelling was pronounced the same as the Elglish ‘’El-lis’ but father in law is saying it’s ‘ee-Lis’ - hope he’s got this wrong?!

Many congratulations! I can’t help you with the pronunciation, but happy news anyway x
TheCrowening · 14/07/2021 22:09

Congratulations OP!

I am not Welsh myself (family is) but I would say your FIL is right, if you were going for the Welsh pronunciation.

BestIsWest · 14/07/2021 22:16

I don’t know OP but other Welsh names beginning with ‘El’ are not pronounced ‘Eee’ - Elwyn , Eleri (at least where I am).

BestIsWest · 14/07/2021 22:17

Congratulations btw.

MintGreenLife · 14/07/2021 22:19

Thanks all! Perhaps we will just have to change to the other spelling if the pronunciation isn’t right. Thank you for your well wishes ☺️

Llongufarchiadau!

Elis and Ellis are both nice.

If I wrote Ellis in 'phonetic welsh' I'd spell it Elys, the way the i sounds is slightly different in Elis. Do not spell it Elys

Your FIL is wrong. E is never pronounced as 'ee' in Welsh.

If you are not in Wales, I'd be tempted to go for the double l.

CalonGaled · 15/07/2021 10:09

That should have read Llongyfarchiadau!
Blush

SilentPanic · 15/07/2021 10:13

Your FIL is wrong. I am Welsh first language, and Elis is pronounced EL-iss. The letter e is never pronounced ee in Welsh.

Huge congratulations! And croeso to the world, Elis bach!

CaffiSaliMali · 15/07/2021 19:48

Agree with others that FIL is wrong - Elis is pronounced Elle-iss like Ellis is. El as in Eleri, Elin, Elinor...

Llongyfarchiadau! Elis is a great name.

DinosaurDiana · 15/07/2021 19:51

Ive always liked Hywel.

MintGreenLife · 15/07/2021 23:28

Wonderful, thanks so much everyone! DH has a Welsh name and is half Welsh, so we have gone for the Welsh spelling to honour his heritage/side of the family x

I’m glad I was wrong! Elis is a great name and congratulations again on your boy.

Your baby is only a quarter welsh.

You will now need to sign little Elis up for Welsh lessons so he can be a proper welshman.
