Help with Welsh Baby Boy Names - Final three

MintGreenLife · 13/06/2021 21:28

Due in 7 weeks and know we are having a boy. DH is Welsh so going for a Welsh name, and we both have Celtic names anyway.

Shortlist is:

Ellis
Ifor
Harri

For ages I was fairly certain we were going to go for Ellis, but now I’m worrying I say it with a slight lisp, even though I don’t have a lisp! I love Ifor but only reservation is our surname, which when put together with Ifor ends up being the name of a trailer brand...but then maybe not that many people would be familiar with it?! Harri is sweet but I think perhaps too popular for our liking when you think most people will assume it’s Harry/there may we’ll be lots of Harry’s his age. Thoughts?!

@MumofSpud thanks for your input ☺️

Elis and Harri are obv v popular in England, though that isn't necessarily a bad thing. (Or their English equivalent)
Ifor will end up as exactly that If Or. For me that is forever the engine at teatime as a child. Also, I have/had several Uncle Ifors so although it's relatively current, is an old man name for me.
My favourite Welsh boy names are Iorwerth or Ieuan, though again, both a bit dated I suspect.

MintGreenLife · 13/06/2021 22:15

@Hughbert I think Harri would be too popular for us, at the mo ‘Ellis’ spelt with two l’s is something like number 90 in the top 100, so not too popular, but I’ve seen it mentioned quite a few times on here, so could be on the rise!

Elis needs one l to be Welsh. A double l is a completely different sound in Welsh.

Tillygetsit · 13/06/2021 22:16

I have no idea how old fashioned this is but my favourite Welsh boy's name is Emrys.

CherryonBiscuit · 13/06/2021 22:18

Ellis. I adore it

MerylSqueak · 13/06/2021 22:19

I love Ifor. It's very underused at the moment. if you're in England it will be Anglicised though. I'd either anglicise the spelling -Ivor - or go for something else. What about Llion or even Lloyd? Not common but more easily pronounced in English in my opinion

ItsNotUnusualToBe · 13/06/2021 22:25

Llion is lovely but no way is it pronounceable in England!

I love Glyn, Cynan and Rhodri.

MerylSqueak · 13/06/2021 22:27

I also like Bryn and Taran (or Tarran). I have a class with three boys called Harri.

MrsFin · 13/06/2021 22:27

My favourite Welsh boys names are
Caradog
Meredydd
Taliesin
Ieuan

MerylSqueak · 13/06/2021 22:28

I like Glyn and Rhodri too. You're probably right about Llion. I just think the potential for mispronunciation is less than Ifor and I love it.

MintGreenLife · 13/06/2021 22:30

@WhenZoomWasJustAnIceLolly I’ve updated my list to just one ‘l’ now ☺️

@Tillygetsit will have to look up how to pronounce that!

@CherryonBiscuit it is lovely isn’t it, and not too over used!

@ItsNotUnusualToBe will look up the pronunciations of those thank you.

@MerylSqueak think I’ll take Harri off my list ☺️

@MrsFin thank you x

I like Elis (one l)
My favourite welsh boys names are Gethin and Iestyn

Saisong · 13/06/2021 22:37

Emrys is really old-fashioned - maybe due a comeback!
Bryn is absolutely my fave - used it as a middle name
Aled is nice, and generally manageable in English. As is Glyn.

I also have a secret love for Ianto

Merchymor · 13/06/2021 22:43

Elis is quite old fashioned.
Ifor doesn't sound right, I just think of Ivor the engine.

Harri isn't a Welsh name and could be mistaken for Harry or short for Harriet.

Gruffydd (Gruff for short pronounced Griff) I like and Euros (pron eye-ross) but could be mistaken for the footie thing or money.

Emyr (em-irrr) is also old fashioned ish but I like it.

I like Llyr but the LL may be tricky (it also has an accent on the y).

Ioan (like ioan gruffydd) or Ifan (eee-van)

I like Osian too (Osh - as in gosh - Anne)

There are a lot of made up so called Welsh names out there that set my teeth on edge.

Personally I like Aneurin (Ann-eye-rin), nickname Nye, nice history with that name.

SilentPanic · 13/06/2021 22:47

I know 2 Emrys' under 5 so it looks like it's coming back. Pronounced EM-riss. Also met a tiny Elfyn- pronounced EL-vin.
Beware the Welsh baby name websites though. I looked at them when I was pg, and found a few listing names that aren't Welsh at all, or just random Welsh words that aren't names. One was Artaith- the Welsh word for torture.

Shock

I really, really hate made up names.
I don't know why it bothers me so much, I guess it seems such a flippant disregard of the lovely rich traditional names we have.

I guess I shouldn't be so precious.

orangejuicer · 13/06/2021 22:57

Emrys is lovely. I also like Cellan but it's tricky to pronounce.

Of your list - Ifor!

wantmorenow · 13/06/2021 23:06

How about Cai. Pronounced Kie. Worked with a headteacher called Cai. Very masculine sounding.

FreakinFrankNFurter · 13/06/2021 23:09

I like Ifor but people will think Harri is a ‘different’ spelling.

My son has the Welsh spelling of a name and I do worry people assume we have just tried to be quirky in the spelling

I like the name Elwyn rather than the Elfyn mention by a pp

Iecydda · 13/06/2021 23:13

My daughter has a Welsh name, we love it! I think we'd have gone for either Gethin or Iestyn for a boy (although he'd probably be called Eee-es-tyn a fair bit rather than "Yes-tyn!!)

Lalliella · 14/06/2021 00:01

The trailer brand is most definitely common in England too sorry.

How about Gethin?

Iecydda · 14/06/2021 01:54

@SuperCaliFragalistic Exactly the same two here (see my original post!!!) Smile

Charliecatpaws · 14/06/2021 02:02

Teifion is one of my favourite names pronounced Taeffon

Charliecatpaws · 14/06/2021 02:05

Sorry that should be Taeffion I missed out the i
