What do you think of Ellis, for a girl?

I like it but would assume it was a boy if I saw it written down. My child has a male classmate called Ellis.

babasaclover · 11/06/2021 17:04

From Grey's Anatomy? I love it

MrsBertBibby · 11/06/2021 17:05

Dislike for either sex.

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 11/06/2021 17:05

I like it. Greys Anatomy!

toastofthetown · 11/06/2021 17:07

I like it for a boy but not a girl. If a girl introduced herself as Eliis, I'd probably mishear it as Alice.

Looking at the name data from England and Wales, there were 780 boys called Ellis in 2019 and only 28 girls so far from unisex.

Donotgogentle · 11/06/2021 17:09

I would see it as a boy’s name in the uk.

TwigTheWonderKid · 11/06/2021 17:16

It's a unisex name ( Ellis Peters is a well known female novelist).

I have a male Ellis and I think he quite likes the fact there is a bit of ambiguity about his name and it amuses him when people make assumptions.

TatianaBis · 11/06/2021 17:20

Loathe.

Elise?

Whitewolf2 · 11/06/2021 17:37

I like it, but I did assume you meant for a boy. That might just be because the only Eliss I’ve heard of is Elis James (a comedian).

Spied · 11/06/2021 17:39

For a boy it's ok.

FedUpAtHomeTroels · 11/06/2021 17:41

I know a girl Ellis, she's lovely. I always thought of it as a boy name, but I'm used to it now for a girl.

ponygirlcurtis · 11/06/2021 17:47

There's a girl called Ellis in my school. It suits her, I like it. There used to be a boy called Ellis too. After first introduction, I find that you don't think in terms of the name but in terms of the individual so if you like it that's all that matters.

stellarfox · 11/06/2021 17:48

I like it for a boy but not really a girl!

DramaAlpaca · 11/06/2021 17:49

For a girl, no.

AuntieStella · 11/06/2021 17:53

Lovely for a boy.

So many people know that Emily Bronte (Ellis Bell) and Edith Pargeter (Ellis Peters) chose it as their pen name because they wanted to be seen as men. Though of course that might be the very statement you want to be making.

highlighteryellow · 11/06/2021 17:55

I would assume it was a boy.

MerryChristmasToYou · 11/06/2021 18:06

I'd assume it was a boy.

user1493494961 · 11/06/2021 18:23

I imagine she'd end up as yet another Ellie.

RuthW · 11/06/2021 18:24

Nice. I know male and female Ellis's. A good unisex name.

partyatthepalace · 11/06/2021 18:29

I like it. But I think pp saying she’ll end up as Ellie is probably right, which would be disappointing. Lois? Ines?

Iceniii · 11/06/2021 18:31

I love it for a girl.

RightOnTheEdge · 11/06/2021 18:41

The first Ellis I heard of was a girl so I've never thought of it as a boys name. When I started to hear of a few boy Ellis' I just thought of it as unisex.

I have a unisex name which is mostly a boys name.
I had a lot of "but that's a boys name" when I was growing up and get quite a lot of post addressed to Mr. I get my name spelt the male way a lot even if I have filled out a form or my name is right in front of people, I just let it pass it doesn't really bother me if it's not an important document.
Some people might hate that and get tired of it though.
But I still love my name and I wouldn't change it.

Roselilly36 · 11/06/2021 18:45

I know male & female Ellis’. It’s ok not a name I would choose, but if you like it, go for it.

Jubilate · 11/06/2021 18:46

I think it's nicer for a girl than a boy.

I also have a unisex name that's mostly a boy's name in the UK. I don't mind either. I think in the future we will all start to see gender as more fluid! I'm not set on Ellis but I do like the ambiguity of it Smile
