Curious for honest opinions.
I really like it for a girl. But don't fancy it as a NN for Aurora etc.

I do really like it for a girl, and was tempted to use it for my daughter. I was put off because it is predominantly a boy's name and worried she would have a life time of issues with it.

DramaAlpaca · 07/06/2021 18:40

Honest opinion? Just no. It's a strong, male, Irish name meaning 'red (haired) king. It's ridiculous on a girl. Spelling it in a more feminine way doesn't make it less so.

bubblesr · 07/06/2021 18:41

Lorelei?

KirstenBlest · 07/06/2021 18:42

Awful.

Lori is ok.

Beeeeeeeeeeeeeep · 07/06/2021 18:42

No.

IsFuzzyBeagMise · 07/06/2021 18:43

Not for me as it's a popular Irish name for boys.
Perhaps as a nickname for Aurora.

InTheNightWeWillWish · 07/06/2021 18:44

Makes me think of Gilmore Girls and honestly Rory was actually really annoying!

gracefull · 07/06/2021 18:47

Ruairi means red haired king. Rory is an anglicisation of that. But, Rory is also a girls name of Latin origin which means Dawn. So that is not the only meaning and it is not ridiculous for a girl, as it’s a legitimate girls name.

I like it OP. There are also other instances of girls being called Rory eg

gracefull · 07/06/2021 18:48

Sorry posted too soon. Eg. Rory Kennedy and Rory Gilmore but seems more common in America

Stichintime · 07/06/2021 18:50

Don't like it for boys, so a no from me. I think its better to go down the nn route, because she may spend alot of time explaining yes she is female and no, it's not short for anything.

ILoveStickers · 07/06/2021 18:53

@gracefull It would only be Latin for "dawn" if it were short for Aurora.

I think it's ok, but only as a nickname. As others have said, Rory Gilmore is Lorelei. I'm sure there are other names that could work.

I think otherwise it causes too many issues. Like calling a girl Bertie - fine if she's Roberta, a bit strange (to me) otherwise.

Amdone123 · 07/06/2021 18:53

I quite like it, but I like boys names for girls.
Rory, though, not the other spellings.

MrsNutNutsmarriedaphilanderer · 07/06/2021 19:05

I like it as a boys name but its not normally used as a unisex name so there would permanently be frequent confusion.
Alternatives:
Roxy
Red
Raya
Rain
Carrie
Annie
Abby
Carey (Unisex)

Carveitup · 07/06/2021 19:12

You could just go with Bob instead?

MadeOfStarStuff · 07/06/2021 19:36

As a nickname it’s fine but not as a full name for girls

cafedesreves · 07/06/2021 19:39

Had never considered it but like it as short for something. Leonora?

Chunkymenrock · 07/06/2021 19:42

No, no, no! I just cannot understand why everyone seems to love Rory names. All I hear is the ultra ugly 'roar' noise. Why do that to a child, especially a girl?

springblossom2 · 07/06/2021 19:44

No - it's a boys' name.

Serpenta · 07/06/2021 19:47

But, Rory is also a girls name of Latin origin which means Dawn. So that is not the only meaning and it is not ridiculous for a girl, as it’s a legitimate girls name.

This is incorrect.

Mwnci123 · 07/06/2021 19:47

I think it's culturally insensitive to use a boy's name from another language for a girl, and vice versa.

Serpenta · 07/06/2021 19:48

Do not like Rory at all as a girls' name. Like that fad 5 years ago for calling girls James.

partyatthepalace · 07/06/2021 19:50

As a nn for Aurora - fine. But as a full name it’s just cruel. It’s a very masculine name (means red king), and it’s also shooting up the charts for boys, so everyone will absolutely assume she is a boy. Is that fair on a girl? No. So don’t do it.

partyatthepalace · 07/06/2021 19:56

@gracefull

No Rory is not a Latin girl’s name meaning Dawn. Aurora is the Roman goddess of sunrise, was dawn in Latin. It’s used to mean dawn or heavenly light now eg Aurora Borealis

The name Aurora is sometimes shortened to Rori.

Rory itself doesn’t mean anything in Latin.

Lemur12 · 07/06/2021 19:57

Not keen. Fine as nn for Aurora, but would avoid as standalone name. How about Rowan? Always preferred it as a girl's name.
