DH has vetoed my girls names because they’re “too middle class”

I’m gutted!

We have a son called Edward, I’m currently pregnant with no. 2. Pretty much got a boy’s name locked in but still shortlisting girls.

Two girls names I said I loved are Ophelia and Arabella. Both go fine with our surname.

He said no to both on account of them being too posh/middle class. Nothing wrong with the names themselves, just the association (in his mind).

He has a thing about anything he thinks is too middle class (even though he is, by definition, middle class himself.)

Can anyone think of names in the same vein that I would like that won’t offend DH’s ridiculous class sensibilities?

Other names I like are

Alexandra
Evelyn (with a short “ev” like in never)

DH so far has said he likes Orla and Georgia. I’m not into Orla, and don’t like Georgia.

Middle names Mary, Rose.

I love the name cara. If i have another daughter i would name her cara

@Isaidnomorecrisps

I think it’s sad he gets to veto. That happened to me and I look back and gave up on the names I’d loved forever, when my ex-DH hadn’t thought twice about it but liked to stay in control. Arabella could be Bella which is completely normal. Ophelia would end up being shortened to something cute. Tell him again how much you’ve thought about this. X ps I know I’m not answering the question, just sounds like veto is more he chooses.
It's not sad that he gets to veto. One of my favourite names has been been vetoed for a reason that I think is a bit stupid, but that's how it goes. You don't need a reason to not like a name.

I don't like Arabella or Ophelia. I also don't Bella or any of the more intuitive nicknames for Ophelia. I wouldn't like them any more if someone told me that they'd been thinking hard about it since I last rejected it. Vetoing a name purely from a control point is obviously a different issue, but it sounds like the OP's husband just doesn't like the names.

Aurelie - this is my granddaughter's middle name - after Congolese paternal great grandmother who died shortly before granddaughter was born. I really was hoping my daughter would choose it for her first name, but alas her first name is not so lovely (though would not say that to daughter)

When we fell pregnant we had girls names sorted but struggled with boys names. For a girl we were going to have Mira-Jane Elizabeth Rebecca, Lilianna Elizabeth Rebecca or Lisanna Elizabeth Rebecca. We vetoed so many boys names and went all the way from A to Z and found around 7 boys names we both liked in the end. You could use a name generator. There is a small chance that you'll change your mind once they're born too as my eldest was supposed to be Louise but thats her middle name because I changed my mind. Good luck with your pregnancy and name choices

Lovely names it doesn't matter if they are middle class what is class these days .
Annabelle and Nancy are nice names and not too many around either .

Jellybabiesforbreakfast · 08/06/2021 23:25

Elizabeth is timeless (my youngest daughter's name) we don't know any other Elizabeth's
My eldest is Jessica. Although I hadn't heard of any Jessica's 34 years ago there's lots of them now.

Ophelia is OK as long as she doesn't marry a Mr Balls!
Or Mr Pratt

Arietty- too close to Areola. Someone at school will make the connection! I like Emma, or Sarah, and Robert if you have another boy.

NiceGerbil · 09/06/2021 00:26

Isn't arietty a spider?
