DH has vetoed my girls names because they’re “too middle class”

I’m gutted!

We have a son called Edward, I’m currently pregnant with no. 2. Pretty much got a boy’s name locked in but still shortlisting girls.

Two girls names I said I loved are Ophelia and Arabella. Both go fine with our surname.

He said no to both on account of them being too posh/middle class. Nothing wrong with the names themselves, just the association (in his mind).

He has a thing about anything he thinks is too middle class (even though he is, by definition, middle class himself.)

Can anyone think of names in the same vein that I would like that won’t offend DH’s ridiculous class sensibilities?

Other names I like are

Alexandra
Evelyn (with a short “ev” like in never)

DH so far has said he likes Orla and Georgia. I’m not into Orla, and don’t like Georgia.

Middle names Mary, Rose.

Call her Susie. It's what I legally changed my birth name to. Wink

Vursayles · 08/06/2021 19:24

Leona was my absolute favourite. I don’t think it has any class associations, it’s sweet, simple and easy to spell. Wasn’t allowed to use it sadly. I’m still bitter!

We nearly went for Ophelia. Until “I feel ya” followed by butt / boob / any other body part was uttered.

WhatATimeToBeAlive · 08/06/2021 19:33

No to Ophelia. Chance of too much mickey taking - Ophelia Dick. And yes this was the actual name of someone. She had a brother called Everard.

Madamesosostris · 08/06/2021 19:34

Don’t get Ophelia. In the play she kills herself, plus the inevitable Ophelia Balls joke.

TheCrowening · 08/06/2021 19:35

Avelyn sounds like something you’ve made up (yes, yes I know all names are made up). I do however like Avery.

Aurelia? Aurora?

Twisique · 08/06/2021 19:35

I'm with your husband in not liking the two names you suggested. Hope one of the other suggestions suits.

Flobbertybillop · 08/06/2021 19:53

The point of choosing a name for a baby, is surely to get one you both like, not one that one if you doesn’t.
There’s enough names out there for you to choose one that you’re both happy with.

Mum2b43 · 08/06/2021 19:56

My friend just named her daughter Octavia, it’s very unusual but strangely beautiful. Middle class sounding but not too posh.

Or just go Lilibet ... it’s about to become a popular name 😁

CoffeeRunner · 08/06/2021 20:00

Evelyn is incredibly popular here - if that bothers you at all. I get to see newborn babies at work & there have been so many lately (also Robyn).

I like Arabella. There's no getting away from the middle class vibe of it I suppose, but I don't really see what's wrong with that.

I also like:

Lucy
Marianna
Annabelle(a)
Annie

MrsKoala · 08/06/2021 20:04

What about Aurelia? It is what ds2 would have been called had he been a girl. (he has the male equivalent as his middle name).

Acovic · 08/06/2021 20:06

My father vetoed Arabella for me (thank fuck).

My childhood in the west of Scotland would have been hell if I’d been called Arabella!!

I ended up a Catherine which I think is a classic go anywhere name (bit like Edward!!).

Similar names - Alice, Charlotte, Olivia, Emily, Isobel,
