DH has vetoed my girls names because they’re “too middle class”

I’m gutted!

We have a son called Edward, I’m currently pregnant with no. 2. Pretty much got a boy’s name locked in but still shortlisting girls.

Two girls names I said I loved are Ophelia and Arabella. Both go fine with our surname.

He said no to both on account of them being too posh/middle class. Nothing wrong with the names themselves, just the association (in his mind).

He has a thing about anything he thinks is too middle class (even though he is, by definition, middle class himself.)

Can anyone think of names in the same vein that I would like that won’t offend DH’s ridiculous class sensibilities?

Other names I like are

Alexandra
Evelyn (with a short “ev” like in never)

DH so far has said he likes Orla and Georgia. I’m not into Orla, and don’t like Georgia.

Middle names Mary, Rose.

Margot, Dorothy, Daphne and Delilah are my current favourites

Jaxhog · 08/06/2021 17:34

What's wrong with Middle Class?

DaisyDoll7878 · 08/06/2021 17:34

Freya
Matilda
Alice

Madremia2019 · 08/06/2021 17:40

Oh I love Ophelia! My DD is Sophia and her friend is Ophelia , i am so in love with the way sounds that if I have another baby I would consider Ophelia. Names that I like is Victoria that goes well with Edward.
Olivia Rose is also a lovely name

Madremia2019 · 08/06/2021 17:41

Tell DH that when he can carry a child for 9 months then he can choose the name !😂

redgirl1 · 08/06/2021 17:46

I love clemantine shortened to Clemmie, I think it’s a sweet name.
I have to agree a bit with your DH about the names you chose, I don’t know why but they make me think of mean posh boarding school girls.
Maybe because of those Enid Blyton books.

ThePearSquare · 08/06/2021 17:46

I know a girl who was going to use Ophelia, I wasn’t keen and like the PP who said it, sounds a bit ‘trying to be MC but isn’t actually’.
I think in the end she went for Delilah which is lovely and does suit her.

Kittysummer · 08/06/2021 17:47

What about lilibet

Smudge77 · 08/06/2021 17:47

Melissa
Olivia
Meghan
Tabitha

I think your choices sound more pretentious than anything and a mouthful also prefer your DH’s name choices. Edward in my opinion is classless, classical and traditional. How about;

Grace
Helen
Emily
Catherine/Katherine
Rose
Eleanor
Hope
Jane
Elizabeth
Charlotte (Connie for short)
Amelia
Amelie

suspiria777 · 08/06/2021 17:54

It's gotta be Amabella.

MeandT · 08/06/2021 17:54

I think Avelyn is really nice, but would mean she had to spell it every time she books something on the phone for her entire life. Sophia or Amelia not quite so much. But then my left field suggestion was going to be Emmeline, which doesn't really meet my 'don't need to spell it out' requirement either ;)

MrsBaboo · 08/06/2021 17:55

How about Aurelia as a compromise? I think it’s too unusual to be attached to any particular class (maybe?) I have an only child but would have loved to pick more names. I let my husband choose Alexandra for my daughter’s middle name so approve of that choice and it can be shortened to Alex. Is your husband hoping for a working class or upper class name as he has totally rejected middle class?!

Marcipex · 08/06/2021 17:55

I think Annabel is nicer than Arabella.
Ophelia is subject to teasing -I feel ya- so I wouldn’t use that.

Isabel
Christabel
Azalea
Aurelia

Jeannie88 · 08/06/2021 17:58

Oh there are too many gorgeous girls' names to choose from! I live Isabelle, Molly, Maisie, Kate, Evie. For boys dh and I couldn't agree. I wanted Oliver and he Elliot. X

GuidoTheKillerPimp · 08/06/2021 17:59

Eloise, Eden, Elise?

dillydallydollydaydream7 · 08/06/2021 17:59

I'm an Alexandra and have a million and one nicknames and I love it. There aren't many of us about at the minute so that gets my vote Smile

unim · 08/06/2021 18:03

Charlotte
Florence
Rose
Helen
Constance
Celeste
Iris
Isabel
Aurelia
Catherine

In other words how about some really, really dull names?

What is pretentious about Arabella, Alexandra, Ophelia?

Twisique · 08/06/2021 18:03

Edward and Avelyn/Aveline/Evelyn sounds lovely together.

How about Edward and Emma?

unim · 08/06/2021 18:04

Gabrielle
Grace
Alexis
Lily
Elspeth
Juliet

TatianaBis · 08/06/2021 18:05

OP I think your DH just needs to come into some acceptance of his true middle classness and make peace with it.

CateJW · 08/06/2021 18:06

I had Ophelia on my list for a while and OH liked it, but I realised I didn't like anything it would get shortened to. We went with Avery. 💗

Londonmummy66 · 08/06/2021 18:08

If you want something from Shakespeare then Imogen, Portia, Miranda, Helena, Bianca, Beatrice, Cordelia are all nice

Names that would follow the Alexandra vibe might be Victoria, Eleanor, Beatrice again, Phillipa

JediGnot · 08/06/2021 18:09

@MissCruellaDeVil

So he vetoed the girls name but not Edward, which is one of the most middle class boys name I could think of. Tell DH he is being ridiculous and the names are lovely.
