Are these Irish names too matchy/matchy?

I'm pregnant with number 2. We've not definitively found out sex of baby but strong suspicion it's another girl and I'm really struggling with girls names. I would really like an Irish name (we are all Irish) or a Scottish name as my mum's family are of Scottish descent.

I have an Aoife already (Ee-fa).

The only girls name I can warm to at all is Róise (Row-shuh).

DP thinks its a bit matchy/matchy. I think they are cute together. Would love some unbiased opinions please ❤

I think they're lovely together.

Ihaveoflate · 30/05/2021 19:18

They're beautiful - have you considered Roisin? That would be similar but not as matchy.

romdowa · 30/05/2021 19:18

Aoife and roisin go perfectly well together. I can't see how they would be matchy at all.

Namesarehard21 · 30/05/2021 19:22

Thank you for your thoughts!

@Ihaveoflate I had considered Roisin but I just don't like the "een" sound at the end. I'm not massively fond of similar names names like Blathin or Realtin for the same reason, it just sounds a bit harsh to my ears!

My favourite Gaelic names are Niamh, Saoirse and Sadhbh (but I wouldn’t use this one unless I actually lived in Ireland) Roisin is nice but always seems a bit old-woman like to me.

Namesarehard21 · 30/05/2021 19:31

@Lipsandlashes Sadhbh is absolutely gorgeous, agreed! Sadly a hard no from DP Sad. I've a close relative Niamh so that's also out for me 🙈

Caoimhe is my absolute favourite Irish girl name. From when I was about 16 weeks pregnant I had that name chosen!

Lipsandlashes · 30/05/2021 19:33

Do you live in Ireland OP? We had to rule out a lot of Gaelic names because we live in London and the spellings were just too much.

Chocolatepeanuts · 30/05/2021 19:35

I think they're lovely together, but Caoimhe as a pp suggested would be too similar imo.

OnlyYellowRoses · 30/05/2021 19:36

Bridie?

DramaAlpaca · 30/05/2021 19:37

I love Aoife and Róise together. They aren't matchy at all, totally different sounds.

Namesarehard21 · 30/05/2021 19:40

I live in Ireland yes, Roise is more unusual here than Aoife but I can't see anyone struggling with it spelling/pronunciation wise. Caoimhe is lovely but they are everywhere here , also its DP's ex's name (who's perfectly nice but still... ) 😅

Erin?

KirstenBlest · 30/05/2021 20:03

Not Erin. It's very popular, but not a name I like.

Serpenta · 30/05/2021 20:06

They work perfectly together, look more similar than they sound. I love Róise, really pretty and much fresher than Róisín. And at least it's not another Fiadh!

Marlena1 · 30/05/2021 20:07

I think they are lovely together. I also love Laoise and Croìa (can't seem to get the fada the right way around on my phone!)

Namesarehard21 · 30/05/2021 20:08

Erin is objectively pretty as a name but could be assumed here that you had certain political leanings, I think it would work a lot better outside Ireland.

@Serpenta Funny you say that, there's 3 Fiadhs in my DD's room in creche (only 18 kids)!

@Marlena1 Ooh I forgot about Laoise, definitely worth a think. Not a fan of Croia but maybe because I hadn't heard of it before Conor McGregor called his daughter that.

Thanks for all the suggestions and opinions ❤.

This new army of Fiadhs will take over Ireland 30 years from now. Grin

SionnachRua · 30/05/2021 20:15

Aoife and Róise are too matchy sounding for me. Maybe something like Niamh, Liadán, Aisling, Aifric, Sadhbh, Emer, Maeve, Bláithín, Muireann?

Serpenta · 30/05/2021 20:15

Fiadhna Fáil

Namesarehard21 · 30/05/2021 20:15

@Serpenta Never a truer word spoken, I've never seen anything like it 😅

Namesarehard21 · 30/05/2021 20:21

@SionnachRua thanks, I want to hear the other side too and I do kinda get they are a bit matchy. 3 of your names I have close relatives with the same. Maeve is on the list but I'm not crazy about it. Muireann I love but DP and I pronounce it differently and it would drive me crazy. Liadán is nice, I've a feeling DP would veto but I'm adding to the list, thank you Grin

They sound fine together, but I'd choose Caoilfhionn.

SionnachRua · 30/05/2021 20:25

Yeah it's hard to find Irish names that haven't been snapped up by family, isn't it? Grin I don't Aoife and Róise are dreadful together but it'd be a no, personally.

A friend of mine had a baby Luisne a few years ago, I thought that was pretty. Though maybe still too like Aoife... I'd have suggested Síofra but that's very matchy imo. I LOVE Raonaid but can't separate it from Murray Sad
