Are these Irish names too matchy/matchy?

I'm pregnant with number 2. We've not definitively found out sex of baby but strong suspicion it's another girl and I'm really struggling with girls names. I would really like an Irish name (we are all Irish) or a Scottish name as my mum's family are of Scottish descent.

I have an Aoife already (Ee-fa).

The only girls name I can warm to at all is Róise (Row-shuh).

DP thinks its a bit matchy/matchy. I think they are cute together. Would love some unbiased opinions please ❤

They’re absolutely fine together. Great pair of names.

Fab set of names together.

Newmum110 · 02/06/2021 22:16

I think the names go lovely together. Both beautiful names.

tunnocksreturns2019 · 02/06/2021 22:21

Lovely names. Not one but two of my late DH’s cousins have daughters called Emer and Emma - I couldn’t fathom that Grin but maybe those names sound more different if you’re Irish?!

Serpenta · 02/06/2021 22:28

Written down they look very similar but Emer is pronounced ee-murr, rhymes with lemur, so sounds pretty distinct from Emma. Prob wouldn't give those two names to sisters though!

UhtredRagnarson · 02/06/2021 22:32

Saorla?

I can see how they'd sound very similar if someone had an accent that adds rs into words (I can't remember if that's rhotic or non-rhotic - like bath vs barth) though. But yeah, very different names to my Irish ears Grin

Anytime a thread about rhotic and non-rhotic accents comes up I spend a good 10 mins trying to pronounce things in my best Southern English accent. Baaarth is certainly one.

Eilidh /Ailidh for the Scottish side?

I had great craic with it once when my Senior Infants class were outraged by The Smartest Giant In Town, they just couldn't understand why the author broke the rhyme... Forcing scarf and giraffe to rhyme in inner city Dublin accents is not the easiest thing Grin

I’ve an Aoife and a Laoise. DH really wanted Laoise but I thought it was too similar to Aoife . We went with it anyway and 5 years later Its never ever Crossed my mind again until this thread reminded me !

TerribleCustomerCervix · 02/06/2021 23:10

I don’t think they’re matchy matchy at all.

I have a Sadhbh, which is criminally underused if you ask me Grin

Agree about the legions of Fiadhs though!

I knew a girl called Connla in Dublin which I thought was lovely name.

M0rT · 03/06/2021 00:16

I don't think they are that similar sounding and both nice names.
I know two sets of three sets of sisters with an Aoife, Ciara, Emer and Sinéad are the other sisters if that helps.

SionnachGlic · 03/06/2021 00:26

My favourite girl's names are Étaín & Aedamar....you can have one OP if you like either!

mathanxiety · 03/06/2021 04:31

Emer and Emma

The first E of Emer has a long E sound.

The resemblance is only on paper.

HeyGirlHeyBoy · 03/06/2021 07:44

Love Aedammair. Hadn't seen that spelling pp. Agree with others, Emer and Emma not similar but a funny pairing at the same time, for sisters.

Sorry I disappeared for a bit, had a sick toddler for a few days. Loving the name suggestions and I am laughing so much about the little kids being outraged by the lack of rhyming cause its so true 🤣. I think it was maybe The Koala who Could which annoyed us most in our house, we could never get the accent right to get "fear" and "idea" to rhyme!
