Ttc & Mabel was on my list the past two times? How would you picture a Mabel?

My friend has a Mabel. She’s adorable

Ifonlyidknownthen · 28/05/2021 23:15

Right away I pictured an old lady with gray curls cut short and a pinny, with pleated trousers underneath.

@SandysMam

I think Victorian Auntie but nowadays it is a very middle class hipster name! I would expect her to wear gender neutral clothes and eat a lot of smashed avocado! Hearing a lot of Margot’s around too. Brother called Otto or Wolfgang.
This! It's edging towards mainstream now, though. Think it has potential to hit Evelyn or even Isla levels of popularity.
Torvean · 28/05/2021 23:33

I have no issues related to the name. It's certainly one of the better older names that are now reappearing.

Bargebill19 · 28/05/2021 23:42

A spoilt, manipulative brat. (Mabel is a grand niece.). Sorry op.

HoldingTheDoor · 28/05/2021 23:50

It's a very frumpy, unattractive name.

stressfuljune · 28/05/2021 23:53

I love it. The new Martha

Talipesmum · 28/05/2021 23:54

Curly hair. Kind of in ringlets. No other assumptions though. Just the hair Smile

JemimaJoy · 29/05/2021 00:02

Adorable name. I'd probably dress her like a little Victorian child for my own joy though Grin

shineaway · 29/05/2021 00:05

Yes definitely ringlets 🙂 very sweet, pretty and slightly plump. Basically I’m picturing Dolly Dingle (who I think had a best friend Mabel). Will grow up to be either a very sweet indie who is good at all manner of unexpected things or a Jilly Cooper heroine.

Appreciate the replies, siblings are Matilda, Mollie & Arthur...

Ahh I know a 7 year old Mabel and she's the sweetest, kindest little girl. It's a lovely gentle sounding name!

DietrichandDiMaggio · 29/05/2021 00:34

I wouldn't perceive her as anything in particular, because it's just a name chosen by parents and doesn't bestow any particular characteristics on her. I do know a 7 year old Mabel, who is a likeable, happy child, but she'd be the same if she was called Isabel or Milly.

YouSeeMee · 29/05/2021 00:41

These days, it's a very cool name. The singer Mabel will inspire a lot more, I imagine. (Nenah Cherry's daughter)

DiscordandRhyme · 29/05/2021 00:44

If

I'd see a shy, dark haired, studious girl.

Empressofthemundane · 29/05/2021 00:45

Old fashioned, unpretentious, wholesome, country, lower middle class.

Hughbert · 29/05/2021 00:48

For me, it wasnt an attractive name last time round. I knew 2 : a dinner lady with a tight perm and a polyester pinny and a golden retriever.

starray · 29/05/2021 01:06

Plain. Aunty Mabel.

Stichintime · 29/05/2021 01:09

Dull

HunkyPunk · 29/05/2021 01:15

Love the name Mabel. Conjures up so many positive characteristics for me - independence, thoughtfulness, confidence....

Lemur12 · 29/05/2021 02:19

I think it's a very pretty name and very sweet for a little girl. I do struggle with seeing a grown woman with this name - it doesn't seem particularly 'strong' and, for me, it does have slight cow-like associations, in the same way that Daisy does... I much prefer the Welsh version - Mabli, pronounced Mab-lee.

ofwarren · 29/05/2021 04:04

I love it with the names you already have 😍
Really cute for a little one and as she gets older I imagine an edgy teenager/young woman.
Excellent choice.

AnyaMoondial · 29/05/2021 04:57

I’d picture a girl with an utterly fantastic name.

drpet49 · 29/05/2021 05:52

Seems to be the new Lily-Mae

Amdone123 · 29/05/2021 06:01

Agree with pp. It's too try hard. It's also in the same family as Mildred and Mavis, so whereas some old names are beautiful ( Martha, Margot), Mabel isn't.
When I hear it, I think of Mucky Mabel who had no manners at the table !
My friend's gd is Mabel. She got really upset when telling an acquaintance the name as acquaintance was overtly horrified. Of course, it was rude of the acquaintance, but inwardly, I cringe.
Matilda and Mollie are lovely. Do you like Martha ? Oh, just realised it rhymes with Arthur. Margot ? Millicent? ( though then you'd have a Mollie and potential Millie !)
