Frozen has ruined Elsa hasn’t it?

Poniesandgin · 26/05/2021 19:44

Really struggling for a girls name.
DH loves Elsa but I can’t realistically use it without everyone always commenting on frozen can I? Is she going to get let it go sang at her for eternity if I do go for it?

Any suggestions of alternatives?

Others on the list if anyone has any thoughts or ideas of something I may have missed!

Evelyn
Elise
Harriet
Ivy
Eleanor
Ada

Yes I think so. 🥴❄️

Probably... You could go for the Scottish Ailsa instead? You might also like -

I would think frozen, but not to the same extent as Arya or Sansa would make me think Game of Thrones for instance. Elsa is a bit more common so you can get away with it.

What about Ilsa? Very similar and pronounced basically the same

Drybird2020 · 26/05/2021 19:54

'Fraid so. Its a shame because the Born Free association is much more positive.

How about Elva? Nordic but uncommon.
There's Ilsa but perhaps not different enough from Elsa and she'd be forever correcting people.

Elsie?
Elodie?

Winkywonkydonkey · 26/05/2021 19:55

My DD knows an Ailsa. Once you know her for 20 mins you forget all about Elsa.

toastofthetown · 26/05/2021 19:55

I love Elsa. I loved it before Frozen: an established name, short and sweet, not too popular, easy to spell and pronounce. Elsa isn't unusable now, but I think you'd have to brace yourself for Frozen comments, but I don't think it would be too much. The novelty of Let It Go would wear off quickly, and it's a long established name. Having Elsa as a diminutive for Elisabeth could work (and give her an out if Frozen is too much for her!).

Another name I love, which ticks all the boxes Elsa does for me, is Vita.

BigPlanes · 26/05/2021 19:57

I think it’s usable. I know a lovely young Elsa who I’ve never associated with Frozen!

lisamarii · 26/05/2021 19:59

I know an Elsa and frozen was the first thing I thought of.

Happycat1212 · 26/05/2021 20:00

I wouldn’t

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 26/05/2021 20:02

Well I don’t see any Thomas getting sang
The Thomas and friends song being sang to then
Or Sams getting the Fireman Sam song sang to them. I could go on.
I think her friends will think it’s cool rather than it inviting teasing

Other ideas for you, though.
Elsie
Elisa
Elvia.
Elena.
Elaya.
Ellia
Aaliyah
Alice
Alicia
Alina.
Alexia.

I like Elise out of your list.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 26/05/2021 20:04

Iris
Imogen
Emilia

YukoandHiro · 26/05/2021 20:04

What about Esther?

badg3r · 26/05/2021 20:07

I would use it if you love it. Anna is still used a lot. Yes it is more common but it's like being called Jasmine in the 90s I guess. The association won't last forever.

DarkDarkNight · 26/05/2021 20:09

I don’t think so. I think the Frozen craze has died down, it’s nowhere near as omnipresent as it was.

It’s a lovely name in its own right.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 26/05/2021 20:15

Pocahontas, Mulan, Cinderella, Rapunzel, Ariel... Just Disney.

Elsa, Anna, Belle, Aurora... Names in their own right.

I still associate Elsa with the lion, despite have 8&9yo girls and probably being able to recite the films!

mogtheexcellent · 26/05/2021 20:20

Ilsa? I prefer it to Elsa

cariadlet · 26/05/2021 20:22

Aroundtheworldin80moves beat me to it. Before Frozen, if I heard the name Elsa my mind would have gone straight to lion and I would have had Born Free as an earworm.

Goodness knows how far back you'd have to go before it was just a girl's name with no film associations.

partyatthepalace · 26/05/2021 20:24

I wouldn’t say so, it’s quite a strong association but it will die down. Makes me think of Lions etc (in a nice way). I like it better than Elise or Elsie,

Eleanor is nice - or Helena is a bit less overused?? Evelyn is too but way too many at the moment.

Otherwise Ailsa, Elspeth, Stella, Estella, Astrid, Honor, Elowen, Olwen, Aster, Esther, Ellen might work? I find Ada and Alba quite ugly, but I think Adela, Adelaide and Adeline are all nice.

chesirecat99 · 26/05/2021 20:24

Well I don’t see any Thomas getting sang The Thomas and friends song being sang to then

They do and they get given endless Thomas the Tank engine books, toys and clothes as gifts but this is also true:

I think her friends will think it’s cool rather than it inviting teasing

What about Elissa?

AlbusSeverusMalfoy · 26/05/2021 20:27

Yea your DH should probably let that one go Grin

Essie is nice.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 26/05/2021 20:29

We had a few of your names on our list for DD2 (not Elsa as DD1 was Isla) and went for Louisa.

Poniesandgin · 26/05/2021 20:32

Thanks everyone!

He loves the name from hearing it on Indiana Jones not from watching frozen. We have sons so no interest previously Grin

Quite a few good suggestions to talk about thanks everyone!!

Ada is probably my favourite but seems to decide opinion. Not to keen on the longer versions.
I loved Evelyn but there’s 2 in my sons class and a few more around. There’s also a fair few Evas.
Harriet I love but DH not sold.
I like Elsie but it feels more old lady than Elsa?
I like Elisabeth but I really dislike liz and Beth as nn which puts me off!

Boys are much easier to name Grin

Serpenta · 26/05/2021 21:06

It's a beautiful name and if it was the name I loved above all I'd go for it. I don't think the Frozen association need to be too much of a pain in the bum. As a child she might even enjoy sharing a name with a Disney character.

Smartiepants79 · 26/05/2021 21:09

I know only 1 Elsa and she’s actually an Elspeth.

ShouldersBackChestOutChinUp · 26/05/2021 21:09

What about Ailsa instead? I believe it's a Scottish name.
