Opinion on the name Rawdon

I’m very strongly for this name and have loved it ever since I first read Vanity Fair in my teens. I just want to gage reactions before announcing it to family and friends as I’m aware it may sound a little too old-fashioned or even pompous for some (or perhaps I’m overthinking it!)

We would use the nickname Rory, and middle names would be Michael John.

I used to know a Rhordan, pronounced like Jordan

MaryThorne · 23/05/2021 19:18

Rawdon is a village north of Leeds so, coming from W Yorkshire, it's difficult to think of it as a person's name.

2bazookas · 23/05/2021 19:21

Vanity Fair was my first thought; unfortunately negative as Rawdon was such a dimwit.

miltonj · 23/05/2021 19:26

It's honestly awful. If be pretty confused if one of my friends or family named their child this.

Concestor · 23/05/2021 19:26

I assumed you had made it up or that it was a place name, it doesn't sound like a person's name at all and is quite ugly to say.

Aerielview · 23/05/2021 19:28

Horrible. Sounds like "rotten".

Beeeeeeeeeeeeeep · 23/05/2021 19:29

Raw dog as in unprotected anal sex between men Grin

Peachesarepeach · 23/05/2021 19:30

Ooh my son was conceived in rawdon, I could've used it!

Saltyslug · 23/05/2021 19:34

Use Rory as the formal name and Rawdon as the nickname

WonkyCactus · 23/05/2021 19:35

Absolutely dreadful.

CandyLeBonBon · 23/05/2021 20:52

Rawdon Crawley was awful though, wasn't he??

Vulvasaur · 23/05/2021 20:54

Sounds like raw dog. OP don't subject your kid to this!

Cindie943811A · 23/05/2021 20:55

I am aware of the VF connection but hadn’t heard of it as a place name.
Quite a cool name but maybe not of you live anywhere near the place.
How about Bingley? Bing for short.
Rochester has a distinguished sound to it.
Beckett?
Piers

ThankYouHunkyJesus · 23/05/2021 21:03

Sounds like dog food.

Scarby9 · 23/05/2021 21:05

I'm assuming you don't live in Yorkshire?

Chilldonaldchill · 23/05/2021 21:26

Sorry OP it's getting a bit of a roasting here but honestly - I don't dislike the sound of the name as much as some people (and didn't know the unprotected anal sex meaning) but he's such an awful character. Well-meaning isn't enough to redeem the fact that he's an idiot and a Hansel l gambler and just.... dreadful!

Kimblebee19 · 24/05/2021 06:38

Going against the grain here, I really don't mind it at all! Think it might be one that has to grow on people. If you love it, go for it. I don't think you have to love the attributes of the particular character to be inspired by a name. For some reason it also makes me think of the name Holden (prob because you've mentioned links to literature and similar ending syllable) which I also like but dont know if i'd use. I like less usual names though (and struggling to chose another boy name myself!).

SallyCinnabon · 24/05/2021 07:07

Sorry it sounds like two names put together, it’s really tricky to say. Rory is so much better.

Also can’t get past it sounding like the other made up names, Jaydon, Kaydon and Laydon (ok I made the last one up 😆)

superlyduperly · 24/05/2021 12:59

@SallyCinnabon what about Shaydon

JustMarriedAndLovingIt · 24/05/2021 13:00

Awful. If you’re thinking of the nickname Rory then use Rory.

MakkaPakkas · 24/05/2021 13:04

Sounds like a new character on dinosaur Train. If you're dead set on it I would keep it secret until the birth then present as a fait a compli. That way everyone will have to keep their traps shut about what they think of it.

Topseyt · 24/05/2021 13:12

Never heard of it before, and I have to say I don't like it at all. It has a very ugly and clunky ring to it.

Rory is nice, and a perfectly good stand-alone name. Use that.

Dogoodfeelgood · 24/05/2021 17:21

I think it’s fine! I think at first glance it’s a surprise because of the start being “Raw” but if someone you knew was named this it’s actually pronounced “roardun” so is much softer in real life. Don’t listen to the haters! Grin

SallyCinnabon · 24/05/2021 17:36
@SallyCinnabon what about Shaydon
Is that a name? 😮

JimBobNoJob · 24/05/2021 23:08

I’ve never heard of Rawdon as a name, (or as a place name for that matter) but I really don’t like it.

Yet I like Riordan, which is not too dissimilar but a lot softer sounding.
