So i was planning on naming my daughter Raven, she's due in September, but i found a really nice unusual name but i don't know what other people would think about it, Shado. What do you think of the name Shado? TIA

Love Raven could not do with the other one

Phrowzunn · 22/05/2021 22:55

What has happened to you in your life OP that makes you want to do this to your beautiful baby? Do you want to talk to us about it?

Kollamoolitumarellipawkyrollo · 22/05/2021 22:59

Shado is horrid as a name! Not a full person-a shado(w) of herself.

Raven isn’t nice but it isn’t as bad as Shado.

Lindy2 · 22/05/2021 23:00

Well both are good names for pet dogs but I don't like them for a child.

Shado is just plain odd. Raven is marginally better but is more of a nickname for someone with very dark black hair. Any other colouring and it would seem a bit strange.

Echobelly · 22/05/2021 23:03

I like Raven, plus they are cool birds. Shado sounds a bit trashy tbh, and people would forever be pronouncing it 'Shade-oh'. Would be better to just use Shadow if you like the sound of it

getyourfreakon · 22/05/2021 23:05

Raven is lovely. I'd go for that.

partyatthepalace · 22/05/2021 23:09

Raven is pretty naff and Shado really is beyond - both in meaning and misspelling - it just sounds like like you got some from some dodgy sci fi. It’s going to be rough on her if she doesn’t share the same taste.

If you want a gothic name all of these have associations with night or the supernatural but they also don’t scream ‘yes my mum was a goth’ from a hundred paces - there will be more obviously- Adrienne, Nova, Luna, Astra, Circe, Hestia, Jocasta, Sabrina, Lilith, Thora, Freya, Sylvia, Zelda, Amaris, Branwen, Brenna, Ciara, Leila, Livana, Morgana,

Tillygetsit · 22/05/2021 23:09

I once met a blonde blue eyed Raven and she,was delightful. Theres nothing wrong with a Gothic name and the OP shouldnt be patronised and spoken down to because it's not your cuppa.
Raven is lovely. Just Raven Octavia is enough without another name making it a bit of a mouthful. Raven Morgana is good too.

Babydust13 · 22/05/2021 23:14

I prefer Raven it's very strong

idontlikealdi · 22/05/2021 23:17

Raven is lovely. The red haired girl from Yorkshire farm is raven. Shado is just odd.

Meganoctavia · 22/05/2021 23:19

@Fleetw00d

I prefer Raven, one thing that comes to mind is the Ravens connection to omens of death etc , but I also considered it before this. Is she likely to be dark haired? Not sure it would suit a blonde baby! Shado is an excellent name for a black lab but not for a baby in my opinion
Yes, she's most likely going to be dark haired and have brown eyes.

@NerdyBird

Are you a fan of The 100? There are characters Raven and Octavia in that show. I like Raven. Not keen on Shado at all.
Never watched it. Octavia is my surname so i didn't choose it.

Raven sounds nice. Shado...scared kids might pick on the child saying shayyyydoo or shaaaa Dow...

Beautiful3 · 22/05/2021 23:31

Awful name. Sorry.

TheDaydreamBelievers · 22/05/2021 23:31

Kids in the UK will DEFINUTELY call her Saddo. I'd go for Raven.

EvilOnion · 22/05/2021 23:32

I like Raven but wouldn't base it on the idea that she'll be dark haired/eyed.

DH and I are both dark haired as is our eldest, youngest was born with spiky black hair but it gradually lightened and now at 8 she's very light blonde haired and blue eyed!

SteveArnottsCodeine · 22/05/2021 23:41

Raven makes me think of two things: 00s Disney Channel dross ‘That’s So Raven’ and the gothic Edgar Allan Poe poem where the titular raven represents death. Neither of these are things I’d want associated with my infant daughter. I’d go as far as to say I’d nevermore want to name my child Raven.

Shado I’m assuming is a misspelling of Shadow? I don’t like the name either way, but “Shado” sounds like how someone from my native Essex would pronounce the word, making it at least twice as bad as a name.

If you like gothicy sounding names what about:

Elvira
Rainn
Willow
Nova
Luna
Lilith

Or Wednesday after Wednesday Addams? All better than Raven and/or Shado.

Sunny4876 · 22/05/2021 23:48

Love Raven.

ThinkIveFoundYourMarbles · 22/05/2021 23:52

"Theres nothing wrong with a Gothic name and the OP shouldnt be patronised and spoken down to because it's not your cuppa."

But the OP is looking for genuine reactions to the names. Surely that's the whole point of her post?

I don't mean this unkindly but both names strike me as trying a little too hard to be edgy and gothic. If your daughter doesn't live up to her mysterious name it might fall a bit flat. Just my opinion through experience with similar names!

PattyPan · 22/05/2021 23:59

Shado is awful, please don’t burden your child with that!

Zzelda · 23/05/2021 00:04

Shado is terrible. Don't do it to her.

Crankley · 23/05/2021 00:10

Shado reminds me of 'saddo' so not keen.

AtrociousCircumstance · 23/05/2021 00:14

Shadow -

a shadow of her former self

following them around like a shadow

Shadowy character

All negative. Don’t do it. Raven is nice though!

My daughter has a gothic name. I like a lot of gothic names but as with any “genre” names there is potential for overload

Raven is a marmite name IMO
Raven Octavia is very dramatic some might say OTT. If I heard Raven Octavia I’d assume that was fist name and middle name as opposed to first name and surname

People bring honest in their opinions isn’t necessarily patronising

funnyoldonion · 23/05/2021 00:20

Please not Shado, sounds so chavvy, you'll regret it but she'll be stuck, I like Raven due to the Owen child too but it's way better than Shado
