Quirky or classic?

I'm looking for reactions to the names Daphne and Rosanna.

My husband and entourage are keen on Daphne but I can't help hearing daft knee... It does go well with our surname and I do find it quite charming though.

I like Rosanna but my husband says it's a gypsy name. I think it's strong and feminine though...

Rosanna. For me, Daphne is akin to Barbara, Gladys or Maureen.

Strawberrryfields · 22/05/2021 06:59

I think I prefer Daphne, it reminds me of daffodils or Daphne from Frasier. I think Rosa is sweet too.

CaffiSaliMali · 22/05/2021 11:06

Rosanna for me. I love all the rose names - Rose, Rosa, Rosalie, Rosemary etc.

Nothing wrong with Daphne, it's just not to my taste.

spangle57 · 22/05/2021 11:17

I immediately thought Malory Towers about Daphne too. But it's a beautiful name and I like Rosanna too.

With both though, a lifetime of incorrect spelling.

M0rT · 22/05/2021 11:22

Rosalie and Susannah are both nice names.
I don't dislike Daphne or Rosanna I just think there kind of dull.
I don't know where the gypsy thing came from though, the only Rosanna I knew was privately educated in a boarding school she was sent to at 7...so very posh.....

Flymetothestars · 22/05/2021 11:59

I love Daphne
How about Delphine too

Flymetothestars · 22/05/2021 11:59

Roxanna ? Roxanne

Cindie943811A · 22/05/2021 13:04

Daphne is a smallish flowing shrub with strong sweet smell. My mother loved ours but I just thought what an unfortunate name. Star of tv series His Dark Materials is called Dafne, which looks quite odd.
A Victorian favourite was Rosetta but I’ve always loved Rosalind/Rosalinda.

ozzyfroggy · 22/05/2021 13:12

Thanks for the feedback, it's kinda confirmed my doubts about Daphne.

I also get that Rosanna isn't that out there. I think he gets gypsy vibe from the toto song.

My favourite was Gloria but it doesn't go with our surname, which rhymes with haggis. We're French English living in France so loads of names either I can't say, he can't say, or sound awful with our surname. Names like Stephanie, Valerie, Audrey and Nathalie he finds common and boring.

Just wish we could find something we both loved! It was way simpler for our other two, Oscar and Juliette.

LOVE Daphne

midsomermurderess · 22/05/2021 16:17

Daphne is such a good choice. And it has a rather 1930s feel to it that seems to fit with the next tranche of older names to be revived.

ozzyfroggy · 22/05/2021 16:47

As my husband really isn't keen on Rosanna, he's pulled his finger out and come up with a suggestion - Rebecca! I knew a million growing up but it's kinda exotic here and wouldn't get shortened automatically. It could be a winner Grin

TatianaBis · 22/05/2021 16:50

Meh. Is that it? Rebecca is rather dull. Becky, Becca, Bec.

midsomermurderess · 22/05/2021 16:53

Rebecca is lovely, particularly if you know it's unlikely to be shortened to Beck's etc.

ozzyfroggy · 22/05/2021 17:04

All the Rebeccas I've known have always been Becky, Becca or Bex so the full name kinda has a fresh feel. I'll need a new nickname though because the nickname habit is hard to break. Maybe Rebs or maracas...

Louise?
Amelie?
Gabrielle?
Charlotte?

EvilOnion · 22/05/2021 20:02

I think Rebecca is lovely :)

How about:
Eleanor, Bethany, Naomi, Marissa, Leona, Helena, Laura

RosesAndHellebores · 22/05/2021 20:02

Love Daphne
Prefer Rosamund or Rosalinde to Rosanna.

Rebecca's a good biblical name. Prefer Esther.

What about Ophelia or Ottilie if Daphne is an option. Similar genre are Xanthe or Isolde in my opinion.

ozzyfroggy · 22/05/2021 20:03

All great suggestions, Charlotte is cool but sounds ugly in my accent. Louise doesn't go with our surname. Amelie he finds boring. Maybe Gabrielle, I was put off by Gabby but I'm considering Rebecca now so maybe a possible!

Eléonore is a great suggestion but already used it for a second name ☹️

OP posts:
TenThousandSpoons · 22/05/2021 20:14

Both are ok. They’ll probably end up Rose/Rosie or Daph though so I’d go with Rosanna.

TenThousandSpoons · 22/05/2021 20:16

Sorry just read your update. Love Rebecca and know one that never shortens it. But if you want a nickname Bec is good.

GodolphinHorne · 22/05/2021 20:24

My grandmother was a Daphne. It’s a nice name but she got called Dafty.

Squeakerfoot · 22/05/2021 20:56

I know both a Rebecca and a Gabriella who never shorten their names.

Other ideas similar to (but different enough from) Eléonore:
Léna
Eloïse/Héloïse
Elsa
Elise

Or what about:
Beatrice
Alice
Celia
Lucie

timeforanother1 · 22/05/2021 21:08

Rebecca is lovely- how about as a nickname,

Rebs
Rebby
Bibi
Reeby?
