Honor Gianna 'Gigi'

She would predominantly be known as Gigi. Will I cause her problems by calling her by her middle name? I don't want Gigi on it's own as it doesn't seem like a proper name and Honor looks and sounds better with her sibling who is Hugo. Am I going to cause her a lifetime of confusion? Other possible name is India.

What does it matter how Honor looks if she is going to be predominantly known as Gigi?

Because every time you use your full name, people who don't know you will assume you are Firstname Surname.

hoomans · 16/05/2021 18:01

What about Honor India, obviously known just as Honor?

I think picking a name that looks nice Next to her brother's then never using it is fairly pointless. Presumably the Christmas cards will be off X, Y, Hugo and Gigi as that's what everyone calls her, virtually no one will know her first name is Honor. It just seems pointless.

Gianna is lovely. Gianna Honor is fine

Beeeeeeeeeeeeeep · 16/05/2021 18:07

Don't give her a first name you don't plan on using. Also don't give her a lovely Italian name then ruin it with mispronunciation.
Honor is perfectly nice. Gigi isn't.

Amdone123 · 16/05/2021 18:15

I don't understand giving children nicknames before they're even born. Surely they just develop? My niece is Olivia and I have always called her Lilly. I don't particularly like the name Lilly, it just happened. She's 25 now and no-one bats an eyelid even though it's a completely different name.
I like Honor but not with Hugo. I would go with India.

Nightbear · 16/05/2021 18:16

Honor is nice. I wouldn’t use India as a name.

TatianaBis · 16/05/2021 18:18

Honor is a gorgeous name, I don’t know why you’d want to call her Gigi.

Gianna is most definitely pronounced Gee aana not arna being Italian.

Honor and Hugo are perfect together.

MsTSwift · 16/05/2021 18:24

Biased as really like Honor why not just go with that?

Nohomemadecandles · 16/05/2021 18:27

Honor Gigi sounds like a toddler on a horse!

Both nice names in isolation though.

partyatthepalace · 16/05/2021 18:59

No - I know a few people who go by middle names, never an issue. Agree Gigi not a full name, though sweet nn. Gianna is not a natural full version, traditionally it is short for
French names like Genevieve or Georgette - so could be Genevieve, Georgia or Georgiana/Georgina here - though I think anything beginning with G is fine.

Unless you have Indian heritage I wouldn’t use India, I generally think it’s fine to use what name you like, but given the UK’s history with India I wouldn’t use this one if you are basically a white Brit.

Accidentallydeletedoopsss · 16/05/2021 19:07

Honor Gigi also sounds a bit like 'on a geegee'

GrinGrin absolutely

Cbeebiesrehab · 16/05/2021 20:10

I would use Gianna as her first name. Hugo and Gianna sound great together.

Cbeebiesrehab · 16/05/2021 20:13

Sorry didn’t read your latest comment. Honor is also nice but may get misspelt frequently.

TatianaBis · 16/05/2021 20:14

^Gianna is not a natural full version, traditionally it is short for

This is true. Gia is the dim of Guiana.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 16/05/2021 23:24

Honor India is fine imo (I've always liked the name India since I first heard it in Gone with the Wind, although people hate it on here - it was used as a name before British occupation of the country though). Honor and Hugo make a nice "fit". Gianna is okay - just sounds very Italian to me compared to Hugo!

Or if you love Gigi but don't like the obvious Georgina/Georgiana, how about Genevieve, Gabriella or even Josephine nn Gigi?

campion · 16/05/2021 23:46

@KirstenBlest

Gianna is pronounce JiANNa

Gigi is pronounced Zheezhee. It would be better as short for Gisele (french pronunciation - Zhis-ELL but she will get called Jizzelle)

Known as middle name is a PITA,

Honor sounds like On a
Gigi will be gee gee.

All very good points, especially the 'gee gee' bit.

First names never used are a PITA for anything vaguely official: doctor's, hospital appointments, passport, school, exams etc.

I once went to a wedding of friend 'Chris' and was confused to hear him being called ' Mark' by most of his family. Turns out his name was Christopher Mark because they thought that flowed better but Mark was his name. When he went to school he found answering to Christopher/ Chris was easier than constantly explaining. So he had 2 names on the go!

JemimaJoy · 17/05/2021 05:20

Honor is lovely, but it really doesn't go with Gianna. Its also incredibly bizarre to want to name your daughter something but to choose a totally different first name and just hope that people go along with calling her a nickname version of her middle name? How about Genevieve? Gigi is a nickname for Genevieve and Hugo and Genevieve go together perfectly. Either give her a first name that can have Gigi as a nickname (preferably not Gianna though as I don't really like it and agree it doesn't go with Hugo) or just don't call her Gigi?

JemimaJoy · 17/05/2021 05:24

Love Honor but not with India as a middle name. Don't like that they both end in a sounds and find a little difficult to say together. Honor would also be best with a middle name that isn't also the name of a place/thing because otjerwise it sounds like an instruction 'Honor India... Or else!'

daisypond · 17/05/2021 07:06

Seriously, Gianna is not pronounced gee- anything. GI makes a J sound, not Jee, so it sounds like Janna. It only has two syllables. Similarly, Gianni and Giorgio are Janni and Jorjo.

thecognoscenti · 17/05/2021 07:36

Honor Gianna is nice and flows better than Honor India, but don't call her Honor as a first name if you aren't going to use it. It causes so many admin issues as a PP has said.

EssentialHummus · 17/05/2021 08:11

If your highest priority is something that can be nicknamed Gigi, use that (though Ji-Aarna sounds terrible, and that's what you'll hear in at least half the UK). If you want a "matchy" name with your DS above all else - which seems an odd criteria, imo - focus on that. I wonder about Genevieve? Can be Gigi, "goes" with Hugo?

EssentialHummus · 17/05/2021 08:12

'Honor India... Or else!'

Grin Grin Grin

prettypinkflamingo · 17/05/2021 08:19

Does Hugo go with Honor? I'm not sure it does unless you're pronouncing Honor with a 'h' at the start?!

KirstenBlest · 17/05/2021 08:32

True. And it's definitely not Gee-AH-a

KirstenBlest · 17/05/2021 08:33

Janna not Gee-AH-na
