What stereotypes of parents and children: James, Jonah, Jasper?

I'm having a boy! And we've found out today so naturally thinking baby names (and an excuse to actually join mumsnet)

Just for fun what would you assume of the parents per name and which one would you chose?

Part of the reason I love James is that it is so classic/timeless that there are no preconceptions of the name. James and his parents could come from any social class and any country where the English language is well used (yet the wide variety of famous namesakes keep the name from being dull imo as do the various style nn's -Jim/Jimmy, Jay/Jamie, Jem etc).

Jonah and Jasper are nice enough though. For these I'd guess middle to upper class, probably hipster/arty parents - possibly religious in the case of Jonah, possibly hippy in the case of Jasper.

PainterInPeril · 30/04/2021 22:08

Jonah is a fantastic name, as are James and Joel.
(Jonah was a good guy, he just needed to learn a couple of lessons!!Grin. After wrangling with a whale and then later being upset by a bottle-gourd plant, he sorted out his attitude out and things went well for him after that!)
To be honest, whichever name you go for, there will always be someone who will find fault with it. Sadly! Confused

doomonic · 30/04/2021 22:09

I love the name James, it's just classic & sounds nice.

Jasper not a fan off, no real opinion of Jonah

Agree

I'm surprised at the posters vetoing Jonah - I think it's a lovely name and although the biblical reference would immediately spring to mind for me, it wouldn't occur to me that it's permanently associated with bad luck. Interestingly, I just looked up the fate of the apostles, and it didn't end well for any of them - literally the only one that does of old age was John. And yet we don't have any negative associations with their names other than Judas, obviously. It's strange how some stories and cultural references are so much more pervasive than others.

Laquila · 30/04/2021 22:21

Sorry...does of old age = dies of old age

PinkOrchidDream · 30/04/2021 22:47

I love Jonah but my partner might need a bit of convincing. I didn't realise that the bible story still held so much opinion.

I like James for the same reasons as most others here. It's a good solid name and it sounds nice.

My pup is Jasper so I love that. Jonah is really nice. Every James/Jim/Jimmy I've ever met personally has been a womaniser and Ive met lots!
Sorry...not my cup of tea. I'd pick Jonah.

partyatthepalace · 30/04/2021 22:52

James - pretty much neutral
Jonah - MC slightly left
Jasper - MC very left, maybe academia, probably vegan etc

I like Jonah and James

Cattenberg · 30/04/2021 23:49

James has parents who are very conservative. They listen to Fleetwood Mac and Dire Straits. Their house has magnolia walls. They thought about repainting them terracotta, but decided that was too faddy. James will go to a good school, work hard and become a solicitor or estate agent.

Jonah’s parents are very religious, but also hippies. They are creative and wear home-made, patchwork clothes. They enjoy painting and playing musical instruments, especially the flute. Jonah will also be musical and play in a band. He might rebel by playing heavy metal.

Jasper’s parents are wealthy and trendy and live in a concrete house with wood cladding, huge windows and riverside views. Jasper’s dad is an architect and his mum is a marketing executive. Jasper will become a fashion designer.

JemimaJoy · 01/05/2021 05:24

I love Jonah and I also love the bible connection and considered the name on that basis (but then I am a Christian. I might wonder if it mum of a Jonah was also a Christian). I think I'd assume I would like the mum of a Jonah. To me it seems like a name that someone fun and interesting but not try-hard would use!

James, well James could be literally anyone from any background, couldn't it. Working class, or member of the roysl family. Would be impossible for me to guess anything about a James.

Jasper - also difficult to guess. Hipoy parents? Maybe. Sensible middle class teacher parents? Perhaps. Super posh wealthy parents? Could be. Grin

I like all the names - Jonah and Jasper I prefer to James, but James gets brownie points as I love nickname Jim/Jimmy (but hate Jamie so depends what you'd want to use).

Forget what I said. i just read this post and thought YES! Every one of these seems perfect Grin
Lindy2 · 01/05/2021 05:31

Jonas is a close alternative to Jonah but without the bad luck implications.

Aliceandthemarchhare · 01/05/2021 06:11

I’m wondering what stereotypes there might be about my sons name now!

doomonic · 01/05/2021 06:24

In 2021? 😆

Gladimnotcampinginthisweather · 01/05/2021 06:25

The story of Jonah is about forgiveness and redemption. I don't find that negative.
The only Jonah I know has very educated Christian parents.
James is probably the safest choice. My public school and RG educated nephew is James, but you come across people called James in all walks of life.
Can't comment on Jasper as I don't know any.

Amdone123 · 01/05/2021 06:27

Am loving some of these answers!
I love James, one of my favourites.
Jonah is great. I've never met one, it's pretty cool. Jasper is nice.

I liked Job ( pronounced Jobe), when I was expecting. As in the patience of.

PinkOrchidDream · 01/05/2021 07:18

I'm really enjoying these! Keep them coming.

I think the wise man at the birth of Jesus was Casper, not Jasper? But I could be wrong. James and Jonah are great names; Jonah would be my preference. I don’t think it’s try hard, whereas Jasper is a bit. Also, I find Jasper sounds a bit hissy and waspish!

Gladimnotcampinginthisweather · 01/05/2021 08:15

StellaOlivetti yes, according to tradition it is Casper.

Onlinedilema · 01/05/2021 08:26

James; stable relationship between the parents, probably married and own their own home. Not young parents and only intend to have 2 children preferably a boy and a girl but would never show their disappointment at 2 boys. Calm, involved parents. Wear Boden and Sea Salt.
Jonah: parents a bit hippy. Went to Glastonbury. Light candles and joss sticks don’t paint their house grey. Instead the house is a bit of a mis match with old furniture everywhere. Garden full of kids toys as they wistfully gaze out at the garden looking for inspiration.
Jasper; Jaspers parents are in their 20s and unmarried. They want a more unusual name but not one that opens their child up to endless bullying. They go camping when they can’t afford all inclusive holidays abroad.

Edenember · 01/05/2021 08:27

What about Jorah? It means autumn rain, which is beautiful.

YoniAndGuy · 01/05/2021 08:29

A ‘Jonah’ is a shorthand for something/someone that brings bad luck.

Like it but would never use it.

James I think is dull, Jasper is kind of great but don’t love it.

How about Jonas? Love that,

Also love Jonathan shortened to Jonty. Much better than Jasper in the ‘casual posh’ vibe 😁

Amdone123 · 01/05/2021 08:56

@Onlinedilema, absolutely brilliant .

BatleyTownswomensGuild · 01/05/2021 09:02

When I was a kid (admittedly a long time in the past), Jonah was a playground insult. A Jonah was someone really stupid. I've never been able to get past that.

James is a smart, sensible, steady sort of boy who works hard at school and behaves himself. Adults often comment at what a polite, tidy child he is.

Jasper wears tie-dye school uniform and on weekends runs around barefoot in the commune where his parents live. He likes drum circles and is trying to grow dreadlocks.
