I'm having a boy! And we've found out today so naturally thinking baby names (and an excuse to actually join mumsnet)

Just for fun what would you assume of the parents per name and which one would you chose?

Congratulations!!
So James has upper middle parents and a steady background. He’ll be dependable with hidden talents Grin

Jonah has hippy but down to earth parents that probably rear their own animals. He’ll be in a band.

Jasper is a loveable trouble maker. Intelligent but doesn’t use it. His parents are fun loving ex ravers!

LemonRoses · 30/04/2021 21:00

I wouldn’t go for Jonah. I’d think the parents didn’t know the name had very negative connotations.

James perfectly ordinary name. Nice, traditional, middle class name.
Jasper makes me think of carrots. Not unpleasant but a bit north London.

MoonBaby1 · 30/04/2021 21:01

Sorry I forgot to say my fav is James Smile

ActonBell · 30/04/2021 21:03

@LemonRoses what are the negative implications of Jonah?

Aliceandthemarchhare · 30/04/2021 21:04

I just hear a children’s hymn ‘come listen to my tale of Jonah and the whale ...’ Grin

I like James best.

PinkOrchidDream · 30/04/2021 21:09

I love the detail MoonBaby1 Grin
I know the biblical story of Jonah but it was ultimately positive in the end.

Is the negative connotation just the biblical reference? The Bible story is cool and weird and intriguing. And Jonah’s not a bad guy - it’s not like calling your baby Herod!

Warrickdaviesasplates · 30/04/2021 21:12

I definitely like Jonah the best, to me Jonah is funny, gentle and nice. Animal lover, maybe a bit hippy but in a cool likeable way.

James would be naughty and arrogant. Attention seeking and takes jokes too far.

Jasper would be posh and have scruffy hair. Popular with the boys but a bit sneery. Probably good at sports.

ActonBell · 30/04/2021 21:13

@PinkOrchidDream - Jonah and James are both great. I know kids with these names and they are cute as buttons.
I think James is a fairly universal name that crosses different social groups/backgrounds.

I don’t love Jasper but that’s just personal preference.

Talkwhilstyouwalk · 30/04/2021 21:16

James is my all time absolute favourite boys name. Strong and classy without being stuffy. I'd go with James!

Heartofglass12345 · 30/04/2021 21:17

James was in my shortlist and we are definitely rely not middle class lol.

The name is nothing to do with the child, their personality will come through in its own way whatever their name is Smile

Talkwhilstyouwalk · 30/04/2021 21:18

Jasper is a bit try hard to me and Jonah sounds kind the male version of Joanna....

LemonRoses · 30/04/2021 21:18

Sailors wouldn’t want to take a Jonah to sea and anyone considered to bring bad luck to a ship or boat is called a Jonah. It, of course, comes from the biblical tale.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 30/04/2021 21:18

James... Anyone really. Perhaps Scottish.
Jonah... Religious parents
Jasper... Arty parents.

That's is based on people I know.

ragged · 30/04/2021 21:20

James or Jonah could be anyone at all. From Chavtastic to aristocracy.

Jasper has very middle class parents, uber aspirational.

ActonBell · 30/04/2021 21:20

@LemonRoses - how interesting! I’ve never heard that before.

Theimpossiblegirl · 30/04/2021 21:20

I honestly don't know why anyone would use Jonah, it's synonymous with bad luck.
James is completely neutral, a safe choice.
I love Jasper.

PinkOrchidDream · 30/04/2021 21:22

Thanks for the replies. I think Jasper is definitely our third choice. I like James but feel it's a bit too safe. But I love Jonah but worry it sounds try hard...

James is a bit play it safe and boring (to me), Jasper is nice, has connotations of being quite posh, I really love Jonah, similar vibe to Noah but less commonly used. I actually like the link to the bible story - it's only a short book but there's a lot of wisdom in it.

Thesearmsofmine · 30/04/2021 21:26

James= traditional family, classic name

Jonah=I quite like it, unusual but not too unusual.

Jasper= I think it’s kind of had its moment with the hipsters now so reserved for those trying to be cool/hip.

annacondom · 30/04/2021 21:29

I love Jonah and it was my first choice but DH didn't like it. Also Joel is lovely. I like Jasper too. Nothing wrong with James except that it's everywhere. I just like the nn Joe but preferred Joel or Jonah to Joseph.

BumpLoading · 30/04/2021 21:30

Jonah is my favorite of the list and definitely wouldn't think its try hard!
It's not safe like James but I wouldnt bat an eyelid at Jonah as have heard a couple others called it too.

daisypond · 30/04/2021 21:38

James is my favourite. Classic, doesn’t demand attention.
Jonah is a no-go. I assume parents without much education - it’s a word in the dictionary, and not a good one.
Jasper is quite posh to me. It makes me cringe a bit.

Synchrony · 30/04/2021 21:55

James - safe, dependable
Jonah - in my part of England and my generation, this was slang for "loner" ("you're such a Jonah!"). Not sure if that's still a thing but it's still what comes to my mind.
Jasper - posh. One of the three wise men. I like it though.

Threelittlebirds1 · 30/04/2021 22:04

Jasper is my favourite, closely followed by James.
It's hard to stereotype James - it's such a classic and widely used that it could belong to anyone (in a good way)
I don't think of Jasper as posh, probably slightly alternative parents but I think it is pretty mainstream now - at least I know a few.
I would assume Jonah's parents were religious. I don't think it's try hard.
