Love Eliza, terrified of Ellie

No offence intended to any Ellie’s or anyone who has a child named Ellie, it’s just not my taste. I was wondering how likely you think it is that Eliza would be shortened to Ellie.

It would get shortened to Liza, Liz, or Lie.

lycheese · 01/05/2021 02:04

Terrified? Surely not.
Who shortens Eliza to Ellie anyway? It'll be Elle or Liza and Elle is a more popular name than Ellie. Could you bare Elle or would that petrify you? I think someone on here is jelly of an ellie as it gets slated so much and although it's a name i wouldn't usually go for it makes me like it more. Choose a different bloody name.

Xanadu58 · 01/05/2021 06:18

My granddaughter is called Eliza and never shortened to El or Ellie . Occasionally she gets called Liza but generally it's always Eliza .

Edenember · 01/05/2021 08:45

@Xanadu58 thanks, that seems to be what most people who actually have Eliza’s in the family are saying.

@CoalCraft I think you’re right, It’s whether the nagging doubt is enough to still make me choose something else.

You really can't control nicknames.
I know an Eliza that I only recently found out is an Eliza. She is universally (at least among people I know - no idea about her family) as Pip. Short for Pippie Long Stocking, apparently, whom she looked like at one point in her youth.
The other Eliza I know has always been Eliza.

Edenember · 01/05/2021 09:35

@Scarby9 yeah I know, that’s what worries me 😂 I was trying to gauge the likelihood from people who have Eliza’s. But I don’t know if I’ll ever be reassured enough tbh as the possibility would always be there, so if it’s that much of a worry, best to think again.

I wouldn't even think to call Eliza Ellie?

Edenember · 04/05/2021 09:59

@earthyfire me neither, Liza (if anything) seems like a more natural shortened form. But in my experience people will shorten or lengthen names whether you like it not, which is fine if you like the shortened forms, but I think if there’s one you really have a strong aversion to, best to steer clear just in case.

Liza is utterly gorgeous how about that?! I have a soft spot for Ellie but then I do for quite a few "common" names (Ruby, Molly, Liam etc) plus it always transports me to The Deathly Hallows scene where Mary Cattermole is being interrogated by that terrifying chick Delores who mentions her children Maisie, Ellie and Alfred and I get a sudden urge to relinquish all responsibilities, dive into bed (preferably with a rainstorm outside) and into J.Ks fantastic world of magic for the 667th time with a never-ending cheesecake. Alas.

Anyway you are well within your rights to not like the name Ellie and you don't have to justify yourself to anyone! We all have our name likes and dislikes for whatever reason.

El (and L) names are popular which may or may not be an issue for you with Elsie, Ella, Elizabeth, Eleanor, Ellie, Lara, Lucy, Layla, Luna, Lola, Lily, Lilly in the top 100 and the majority of them increasing in popularity according to names.darkgreener.com. Ellie is fairly low in the top 100 and although it has had quite a reign it is on the decline. Elizabeth is on the incline. I have never known anyone to shorten Liza to Ellie so it seems unlikely to happen.

HappyHa · 04/05/2021 11:59

What other names do you like? Would Louisa or Lisa work? I think Liza is a fab name and it's similar to Eliza it reminds me of Minnelli.
If not just go for Eliza it would be a shame to miss out on a name you really love because of a nickname that's unlikely to occur. It would be like worrying about an Andrew being called Adam or something. I say go for it!

@HappyHa Thankyou for such a lovely and thoughtful response. Your description of cosying in for Harry Potter made me feel all warm and fuzzy inside 😊

I’m not keen on Liza as a full name...in fact I don’t have a single L name on my list. I wouldn’t mind it so much if people shortened to that though, although I never would myself.

I’ve made another thread with my list, called rate my (current) girls list, I don’t know how to link here sorry X
