What are your thoughts on Agatha and Agnes. Maybe Aggie as a nn for either

Don’t like Anges, hate Aggie, love Agatha.

purplejungle · 14/04/2021 20:29

Bear in mind that 'aggy' is what lots of people say as an abbreviation for aggravated ie 'he's being a bit aggy today'.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 14/04/2021 20:44

I want to love Agatha so much (big Agatha Christie fan!), but I just don't really like the harsh "ag" sound - so Agnes is also not for me, sorry.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 14/04/2021 21:05

Awful and unfriendly names.

Aprilshowersandhail · 14/04/2021 21:07

Trunchbull

TempsPerdu · 14/04/2021 21:15

Not good I’m afraid. I’m a big fan of vintage names, even some quite clunky ones (DD has one that many people think is harsh-sounding) - but the Ag- sound in both of these is too much even for me.

Never met an Agatha, but the Agnes I knew at school ended up changing her name, which I think speaks for itself.

Happycat1212 · 14/04/2021 21:23

Aggy means aggravated 😕 so that would be a no for me, I don’t like either name anyway

TheBullfinch · 14/04/2021 21:26

Not keen on Agatha as it sounds harsh but I love Agnes. The 'nes' at the end softens it nicely and it's unusual. I knew an Agnes who was known as 'Nessa.'

emvy · 14/04/2021 21:28

Well it seems I’m in the minority but I like both of these! Not sure about Aggy as a nn though.

May2021Mummy · 14/04/2021 21:29

I like both the names but not the nickname

AnyaMoondial · 14/04/2021 21:30

I absolutely love Agatha.

Really like Agnes too.

Sturmundcalm · 14/04/2021 21:31

Think they're probably about to both get a lot more popular due to Wandavision... I prefer Agnes although probably wouldn't pick either personally.

DotDotDotDotDot · 14/04/2021 21:43

Sorry I think they’re both awful, they’re very harsh sounding. As pp mentioned Aggie is slang for aggravated/upset. I’m not that cool by the way, my teenage cousin keeps me up to date with the current lingo, she’s very amusing. Have you got any other ideas? I think Ines is French/Spanish/Portuguese for Agnes which sounds lovely to me.

lemonsyellow · 14/04/2021 21:49

I like Agnes particularly but Aggie is awful.

GreyhoundG1rl · 14/04/2021 21:51

They're both awful, and Aggie as a nickname is even worse!! Seriously, Aggie? Such an unpleasant sound.

ThursdayLastWeek · 14/04/2021 21:51

It was Agatha all along!

(Wandavision)

M0rT · 14/04/2021 21:55

I like Agatha, I think the aggie for aggressive is probably where you are. I have never heard it, they say agro around here.

CoffeeRunner · 14/04/2021 21:59

Absolutely dreadful.

KoalaOok · 14/04/2021 21:59

Agnes as a middle name if named after a relative.

dotdotdotdash · 14/04/2021 22:04

I think they are both too 'Victorian maiden aunt'. What about Anya or Odile or Edith?

dotdotdotdash · 14/04/2021 22:05

Or Ottilie, Ottie for short

GreyhoundG1rl · 14/04/2021 22:13

I really hate diminutives. Would you like to be called Ottie? Confused

Saltyslug · 14/04/2021 22:17

Agnes with nn ness or nessy

dotdotdotdash · 14/04/2021 22:17

Yes @GreyhoundG1rl, I would. I'm guessing you would prefer to be called Snotty?

Nellle · 14/04/2021 22:17

Love them both, particularly Agnes.
