What are your thoughts on Agatha and Agnes. Maybe Aggie as a nn for either

I like the name Agatha but hate aggy and it would 99% of the time revert to that which doesn't have a positive meaning.

IdblowJonSnow · 14/04/2021 22:36

I do like Agnes but I'm not anyone other than a super cool girl could carry it off.

Edenember · 14/04/2021 22:37

Prefer Agnes - it’s lovely.

HoppingPavlova · 14/04/2021 22:38

Love them both with the preference for Agatha. Was my number 1 pick but DH didn’t like which has caused me nearly 20 years of wishing I could have had my way. Love the nickname Aggie also (although culturally for us it would morph to Ags pretty quickly once high school hit.... as that’s what we tend to do to names hereHmm).

IdblowJonSnow · 14/04/2021 22:38

Sorry, # I'm not sure. ^

VenusClapTrap · 15/04/2021 08:28

I like both. Agnes is my favourite though. I wouldn’t shorten either.

MyHolyWine · 15/04/2021 09:04

I love Agnes, I think it’s a beautiful name. I hate Agatha, I find it really ugly. And I really dislike Aggie for the same reason. I quite like Agathe though, which is the French (pronounced A - gat) which you could spell Agate, which is then the stone, not the saint’s name, but easier for English speakers to pronounce right!

elfran · 15/04/2021 12:23

I like Agatha but love Agnes - it was on the list for my 6-week old daughter (we ended up going with an even more marmite and equally "harsh-sounding" name that is probably hated on MN 😆). I don't mind Aggie but I'd have probably tried to stick with the full name had we gone with it.

I don't really understand the current trend of all girls names having to sound soft and pretty! It's led to an over abundance of princess names and L-heavy names that blend into each other. I think an Agatha or Agnes would be refreshing at a nursery these days!

bridgetreilly · 15/04/2021 16:34

I really like both of them.

Annis is a very pretty corruption of Agnes if you want something a little softer.

GrimDamnFanjo · 15/04/2021 16:36

Taggie?
The woman who tamed Rupert Campbell Black!

Dauphinois · 15/04/2021 16:40

@GrimDamnFanjo

Taggie? The woman who tamed Rupert Campbell Black!
I was about to say this! Jilly Cooper shortened Agatha to Taggie, which is lovely I think.
PrincessesRUs · 15/04/2021 21:01

I love the french pronunciation of Agnes which is like Annyess

GreyhoundG1rl · 15/04/2021 21:02

@PrincessesRUs

I love the french pronunciation of Agnes which is like Annyess
Much nicer.
stellarfox · 15/04/2021 21:36

I’m not a fan. My partner did suggest Agatha when our daughter was born so he likes it. I find them a bit heavy/clunky. I do think Aggie is sweet though

MyLifeNow20 · 15/04/2021 21:47

Love both and Aggie!

Ellmau · 15/04/2021 22:44

They both have quite a harsh sound to me.

partyatthepalace · 18/04/2021 16:15

Love them both

TatianaBis · 19/04/2021 12:11

Loathe Agatha. But Agnes is fine. Prefer French pronunciation.

ILoveStickers · 19/04/2021 12:44

I want to like them, but can't quite.

I met a baby Agnes last year, though, and it was a cute name on her.

I also met a French Agathe once, and it sounds so much cooler! Or Agata (Italian??)

annacondom · 19/04/2021 12:51

There is a time when I would've hated both of these but now I think they're so unusual that they have no negative connotations and I like them both. I came on here to suggest the French pronunciations, but that might sound a bit pretentious, I suppose. I had an Aunt Aggie, who was lovely, and I found out recently that her name was Charlotte Agnes, but she chose to be known as Aggie! (I would've gone for Lottie:))

Ellasmummyx1 · 19/04/2021 12:53

Dreadful sorry! Really frumpy, matronly names

LeopardSheet · 19/04/2021 17:14

I think they sound nice if you’re Scandinavian (also like agnetha) but otherwise no

DungeonKeeper · 19/04/2021 18:17

Awful ugly names. Aggie as a nn is terrible.

MadeOfStarStuff · 19/04/2021 18:38

Not a fan of either but prefer Agatha to Agnes, I think the Agn makes it sound harsher

Phyllis321 · 19/04/2021 18:43
