Pronunciation issues baby girl names

Originally we really like Fiadh (fee-a) for our baby girl but realised it could sound like fear in certain accents so decided against it. Now we really like Maya (may-a) but worried about people pronouncing it My-a. Wish we could find a name that doesn’t come with pronunciation issues but these are the only two names I’ve loved. What do you think?

I would pronounce it my-a I’m afraid, and I think lots would.

Troyhelena · 11/04/2021 20:38

I wouldn’t even think about pronouncing Maya as May-a

alexdgr8 · 11/04/2021 20:39

can you not find a name with simple definite pronunciation.

Hufflepuffsunite · 11/04/2021 20:40

Yeah I'm a teacher and Maya/Maia/Mya/Mia all seem to be quite popular with interchangeable pronunciations. I would instinctively pronounce Maya as May-a but have come across lots who say My-a. That being said, you should only have to correct pronunciation once or twice and people will get it.

MrsTerryPratchett · 11/04/2021 20:42

All My-as here. Sorry.

I know a Mara, who pronounces it May-ra. About half the people who know her pronounce it wrong. It's tiresome.

Edenember · 11/04/2021 20:53

I know a child Maya who always gets May-a which is her parents intended pronunciation. Many people round here aren’t internationally minded enough to pronounce it any other way than how it looks phonetically in English and have never heard of Maya Angelou. I personally prefer the Maia spelling and think this might be less likely to be gotten wrong. Either way, people will only need told once.

Frogartist · 11/04/2021 21:06

I think people will pronounce it yourvway if you spell it Mayah.

Bruce2 · 11/04/2021 21:07

I'd pronounce Maya as May-a.
Looks quite self explanatory to me

Mya or Miya pronounced MY-A

Mia pronounced MEE-A

proopher · 11/04/2021 21:08

I would say My-a. I know several and they're all pronounced that way.

Changingwiththetimes · 11/04/2021 21:19

I never heard anyone pronouncing Maya as May-a. Always My-a. Never heard of the first name (i guess it's Irish?). Setting your (or rather your child) for a lifetime of correcting people.
There are hundreds of thousands of names out there. I'm sure you can come up with one that is less difficult. (Mind you I have a bog standard name and I can't believe how people mispronounce or misspell it).

I really like the name Fiadh. My DD is called Nia (Nee-ah) - it's welsh and in some accents sounds a bit like 'near', but it's honestly never bothered me - try not to overthink it if it's a name you really love.

I also prefer Maya pronounced your way, but I think the more accepted way is My-ah. How about May or Maeve? Or Mira / Meera?

Tryingtryingandtrying · 11/04/2021 22:36

Cara is nice, similar roots as Fiadh too if you are looking for a end sounding names

zigaziga · 12/04/2021 06:53

The only two Mayas I’ve known are both pronounced My-a and I thought that was the correct pronunciation? Mia = Me - a and Maya = My- a ?

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 12/04/2021 10:46

I love Maya when pronunced May -ah but I think My-ah is the more popular pronunciation in some areas unfortunately, so you would have to put up with that .There isn't really a "correct" pronunciation - Maya can be said like the Mayan people (My-ans) but Maya is also another spelling of the Goddess Maia, after whom the month of May is named (so May-ah is "correct" too).

Fiadh is fine, but I must admit I prefer the sound of similar Nia or Zia.

Drunkenmonkey · 12/04/2021 11:07

I love Fiadh! It's one of my favourite names. Do you live in the UK?
I would assume Mya for Maya but honestly don't worry too much about it. People only need correcting once and it really doesn't matter if a dental receptionist or teacher on the first day of school says Mya. They get corrected once and just learn.
Fiadh is lovely though, I don't think of fear because it is pronounced like Mia which is different.

MichelleScarn · 12/04/2021 11:09

If its the pronunciation you like how about Thea?

KoalaOok · 12/04/2021 11:13

Go for Fiadh if you like it. Or ad PP suggested Thea? There are so many Mya/Mias around.

Ejm02 · 12/04/2021 11:29

I would usually pronounce Maya as My-a.
I really like Mae or May instead

JemimaJoy · 12/04/2021 11:55

My friend Maya is a My-a.

So is the little Maya I know.

Never heard of Maya like May-a

Mamamamasaurus · 12/04/2021 11:57

I've never heard Maya pronounced as May-a, even my sibling's DD is My-a

Pinkywoo · 12/04/2021 12:10

If you like Fiadh then what Ffion? I realise one's Welsh and one's Irish but you don't mention if that's an issue.

Girlname · 12/04/2021 13:19

We also really like the name Maya and it's a frontrunner for our little girl. We'd be pronouncing it 'my-ah' rather than 'may-ah'. Not sure which is the more common pronunciation, perhaps it depends on area. Regardless I think we'll just need to be happy to correct people as it will clearly be mispronounced occasionally.

Palavah · 12/04/2021 13:23

Just go for Fiadh!

pinkpinecone · 12/04/2021 14:39

I would pronounce it My-ah too

PattyPan · 12/04/2021 16:02

I would pronounce it My-a too, like the Mayans. What about Maeve as I’m guessing you’re Irish?
