Alannah or Daphne

I think I prefer one but the other one feels like it fits better with the sibling names which are both Irish. Which do you prefer? Any preconceptions of either name? The Scooby Doo thing doesn't bother me at all.

I much prefer Alannah. It's a great name on little ones and an adult.

pheasantsinlove · 06/04/2021 21:44

I prefer Daphne! I don't think this is going to help you much! Grin

Laquila · 06/04/2021 21:45

Daphne for me - unusual and charming. I am not normally so brutal on baby name threads but you did ask...Alannah for me embodies the Terry Pratchett line about Nigella being a name that means "Oops, we wanted a boy" 😳

Spied · 06/04/2021 21:45

Allannah

I don't like Daphne. Looks and sounds ugly to me. A bit like Phoebe.

Drunkenmonkey · 06/04/2021 21:48

@laquila that's really interesting because to me it sounds like such a feminine name! It's interesting how names can be perceived so differently. After two boys I would be more than happy with a girl Grin (would still love another boy though, we're not fussed)

I have a real soft spot for the name Alannah ❤

Drunkenmonkey · 06/04/2021 21:52

Also what nicknames (if any) would you use? I realise they evolve naturally but still interested to hear. I quite like Lani, but not keen on Daph.

Alannah is gorgeous Smile

mangodreams · 06/04/2021 21:56

Alannah definitely, have always loved that name.

Really don't like Daphne, always thought it was such a wet name and just makes me think of the nn Daffy which is even worse.

JamieFrasersBigSwingingKilt · 06/04/2021 21:56

My grandmother is called Daphne. She's known by her full name or Daph. I've used it for my youngest daughter's middle name. People generally respond positively to it.

daisypond · 06/04/2021 21:56

I prefer Daphne by a long way. You could shorten to Dee.

pheasantsinlove · 06/04/2021 21:57

Nicknames aren't always shortened versions .. they can also be plays on the name, I quite like little Daphie, or Daffodil... which could thin become Dilly!

I just think Alannah is a bit meh. It has no character. But as is already proven on this thread there's going it be lots of people liking and disliking each... I just hope it doesn't end up putting you off both!

SelkieBoru · 06/04/2021 21:58

Alannah

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 06/04/2021 22:11

Alannah is gorgeous (although I prefer it spelt as the more common/popular Alana, as I think having to always correct the spelling of your name could be annoying). Lani is cute although she could even use Annie or Ally too.

I'm not keen on Daphne, too like Daffy/Daft for me, sorry.

MySocalledLoaf · 06/04/2021 22:13

Alannah, Allie

Petal7 · 06/04/2021 22:15

Much prefer Daphne. Lovely nicknames too.

Tianatiers · 06/04/2021 22:16

My 6 year old DD keeps telling me she wishes she was called Alannah - pronounced A-lar-na - if that helps!

BramStoker · 06/04/2021 22:19

Daphne by a mile. Cool and elegant.

Alannah sounds a bit dated (90s) to me

whataboutthecat · 06/04/2021 22:19

Alannah was 'the girl from tomorrow' tv show when I was growing up, so I think I prefer that one.

Daphne is a bit neighbours or home and away (can't remember which she was a character in). And also in Frasier. Only place I know the name from. Never heard it IRL.

HairyToity · 06/04/2021 22:20

Alannah

damndorothea · 06/04/2021 22:21

Alannah. Although I do like Daphne

whataboutthecat · 06/04/2021 22:23

Just looked it up.. She spelt it Alana.

LuluJakey1 · 06/04/2021 22:23

Daphne definitely

Tianatiers · 06/04/2021 22:24

I prefer the spelling Alana.

Flymetothestars · 06/04/2021 22:27

Daphne
Alannah just sounds too much like Alan to me , or Hannah mangled up
