Alannah or Daphne

I think I prefer one but the other one feels like it fits better with the sibling names which are both Irish. Which do you prefer? Any preconceptions of either name? The Scooby Doo thing doesn't bother me at all.

I love Daphne, so elegant

GertrudeTheGreat · 06/04/2021 22:33

Daphne

RoseMartha · 06/04/2021 22:34

Alannah

TiredMa5 · 06/04/2021 22:36

Alana here! Never been given a nickname, I.e Allie or Lani. (Created ACC just to post this!) both names are pretty but I’m obviously biased! Good luck.

Corcra · 06/04/2021 22:44

Love Alannah. ( I’ve only known it to be spelled like that).
My brothers still call my cousin banana, the nn they gave her as kids.
Daphne is cool too! Great choices.

MrsBungle · 06/04/2021 22:45

I love the name Alanah

babytum · 06/04/2021 22:47

Alannah is an Irish name, derived from álainn which means lovely and leanabh which means child, so as an old Irish word that literally means lovely child but would be a pet name that say your granny might call you ie come here alannah and give me a hug etc. I have an Alannah, so I’m biased but love Damphne too, big fan of both

babytum · 06/04/2021 22:49

And we call our Alannah banana sometimes and Lala. She’s an adult now and survived the nicknames 😂

babynamelover · 06/04/2021 22:52

Alana spelt like this Lani is a cute nn
Daphne is not old enough to be cool yet for me.

Drunkenmonkey · 06/04/2021 23:03

@pheasantsinlove it's so funny you said that as earlier I was thinking I could call her daffodil and dilly. We play with names a lot at home, my son is called Beany, nothing like his actual name
Grin
Thanks for all the comments, it's almost completely split down the middle!
I love both names. I feel like Alannah is the kind of name I would have wanted as a young girl, it's elegant and pretty and inoffensive and I love the Irish meaning. Daphne is more vintage glam and it has a wistful, almost ethereal feel to it (for me)

I prefer Alannah. It's such a sweet and gentle-sounding name.

YenneferOfBattenberg · 07/04/2021 05:32

Daphne!

Alannah looks like a made up name. Alan would be a nice nn though I guess. Grin

YenneferOfBattenberg · 07/04/2021 05:32

Alan? Nah!

Blacktothepink · 07/04/2021 05:50

Alannah!

pheasantsinlove · 07/04/2021 09:07

@YenneferOfBattenberg you may have been joking but I think Alan would be a brilliant nickname to have! GrinGrin if you could guarantee going by the nn Alan I'd change my vote from Daphne to Alannah!! Grin

HeyGirlHeyBoy · 07/04/2021 09:12

Alannah much nicer. It has a lovely softness to it.

Rainallnight · 07/04/2021 09:17

I love Daphne and really dislike Alannah. When I was growing up in Ireland it was a bit common. Sorry to use the word.

KoalaOok · 07/04/2021 10:23

Daphne

stormelf · 07/04/2021 10:45

I prefer Daphne

Dietcokeaddiction · 07/04/2021 11:22

Daphne.
Alannah sounds very dated to me.

RuthW · 07/04/2021 12:21

Difficult one..... I love both. Poss Daphne slightly more.

YenneferOfBattenberg · 07/04/2021 12:50

@pheasantsinlove only partially joking, but I didn't get the vibe from the OP that she'd be up for Alan as a nn for her daughter.

I like the name Alan and might consider it for my future fur bébé (dog) when he/she finally joins our family.

Joolsin · 07/04/2021 12:54

I prefer Daphne, but if your other two have Irish names, Alannah goes better. I've come across many spelling variations of the name, but Alannah is the most common.

Synchrony · 07/04/2021 13:16

I think choose the name you prefer. I don't personally think it matters if siblings have names that go together.

Leytonladee · 07/04/2021 13:37

Daphne definitely.

Alannah's a bit "Shannon'. Dated without the classic vibe.
