Ximena or Xiomara ?

Which one do you prefer for a girl? And no, we don't really mind pronunciation issues or the fact people won't be able to say them. If people can learn to say Schwarzenegger I'm sure they can say either of these names.

Xiomara is pronounced like see-oh-mara
Ximena is he-meh-nah

It would be an average British surname with easy pronunciation. I am Colombian and DH is British and we live in the UK.

I like Ximena the most out of the two.

I have one in my family (I'm Mexican-American) and she's a delightful child.

elp30 · 07/04/2021 09:28

@closetclosetcloset

llijk She will grow up in an English speaking country but not a chance I will anglicise her name. If you do that to your name when meeting Spanish people that's totally valid but I am not doing that for my child. She will have an English surname already and that's enough English in her name.

I totally agree!

I am Mexican-American and my husband is English and our two children were born in England. My son has a fully English name but our daughter has a name to honor her Mexican-born grandparents so it's Spanish. I wouldn't dream of "anglicizing" her name just because others couldn't pronounce it or for whatever reason. I find that rude to even suggest that.

My daughter is 20 now and she likes having her name and just spells it for people or corrects people if they make a mess of it. It's fine.

So Ximena or Xiomara, it is! I'm Team Ximena! Lol

I think Xiomara is the nicer sound of the two. It will be pronounced with a Z sound for the most part when people read it for the first time but that's fairly close to the actual pronunciation.

MissMoodyMoo · 07/04/2021 10:59

I know an adult xiomara and I think its a really beautiful sounding name

Dietcokeaddiction · 07/04/2021 11:24

I like them both.
I think I'd go for Xiomara as the pronunciation is more intuitive to me as a non Spanish speaker.
But Ximena is sweet as well!

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 07/04/2021 18:45

Xoimara.

Troyhelena · 07/04/2021 18:47

Xiomara!

Fairystory · 07/04/2021 19:16

Pronunciation is important. I do not like having a name that English people can neither pronounce or spell. It's a lifelong issue and no, people do not learn how to pronounce it. My children have common ordinary names.

MadeOfStarStuff · 07/04/2021 19:37

Xiomara

closetclosetcloset · 07/04/2021 20:35

Fairystory Don't know how else to say this without sounding rude but I don't care. I have a difficult to pronounce and spell name with even a foreign character so I know all about it. If your children have ordinary names that's good for you.

There is a character named Xiomara in Jane the Virgin and I've loved the name ever since watching!

MySocalledLoaf · 07/04/2021 20:51

Wow you really brought out the xenophobes.
I love Xiomara!
You have the same name as my sister and she has a lot of trouble with the ñ. Xiomara will be easier I think.
Catalan is closer to Italian than to Spanish so the pronunciation of Catalan names won’t help anyone much.

Nogardenersworld · 07/04/2021 21:38

Op people are so worried about their children possibly ‘standing out’ god forbid
Good for you for ignoring them

Xiomara is prettiest I think, and the easiest for native English speakers I’d imagine
It’s a lovely name I hadn’t heard before

Mishmased · 07/04/2021 21:52

As well as liking Xiomara @closetclosetcloset I love Begona such beautiful floral name.

Troyhelena · 07/04/2021 23:29

My children have common ordinary names
Sucks to be them then doesn’t it

RainBow725 · 07/04/2021 23:49

Definitely Xiomara. And then please have a boy and call him Rogelio Grin

Time2b33 · 08/04/2021 00:07

Both lovely!!

MandalaYogaTapestry · 08/04/2021 08:59

OP, why did you add * to the Fairy* poster's name?

WorkingItOutAsIGo · 08/04/2021 09:59

Mandala it’s a courtesy people use here so someone can see when they have been addressed as their name is in bold, without the bother of being @ ed and getting messages about it.

MandalaYogaTapestry · 08/04/2021 10:46

Working I know that, but she added two asterisks * * inside her name

WorkingItOutAsIGo · 08/04/2021 11:03

Funnily enough, I don’t see that on her posts but I do on yours Grin so I think it’s an app issue not an OP issue!

adrianmolesmole · 08/04/2021 11:05

I like Xiomara. Are they Columbian names?

user1493494961 · 08/04/2021 14:38

Neither.

closetclosetcloset · 08/04/2021 15:23

MandalaYogaTapestry I only wrote the name in bold letters. It doesn't show the actual ** around the name to me though so as PP suggested it might be your app.

These are both beautiful names, and it's great that you're choosing a name from your culture. She'll definitely stand out! However, be aware that practically no one in the UK will pronounce either of them right first time. Once they've been corrected, it should be easy enough for people to get it right, but you'll definitely get a wide range of pronunciations from people. The thought of it might not bother you now, but you may find that it becomes annoying and tiresome.

That being said, names like Maya and Esme get different pronunciations here too. So if you love the name then go for it. And to answer your question, I think Xiomara is the nicest.
