Ximena or Xiomara ?

Which one do you prefer for a girl? And no, we don't really mind pronunciation issues or the fact people won't be able to say them. If people can learn to say Schwarzenegger I'm sure they can say either of these names.

Xiomara is pronounced like see-oh-mara
Ximena is he-meh-nah

It would be an average British surname with easy pronunciation. I am Colombian and DH is British and we live in the UK.

The Carnegie prize winner a couple of years ago is called The Poet X and is all about a girl called Xiomara. A lovely book and on that basis I would go for this name!

ThatWouldBeEnough · 06/04/2021 08:40

I prefer Xiomara, it sounds lovely!!

Justaonetimeting · 06/04/2021 08:41

@Macaroni46 surely that's the same for Siobhan's or Ioan's though? I think Brits just need to adapt and learn to say different names and get over the embarrassment of asking people how to pronounce names. I say that as a half Brit.

Yamaya · 06/04/2021 08:42

@macaroni46 I have a name no one knows how to spell or pronounce. Doesn't bother me in the slightest! I just tell them how to do it! I'm more glad I don't have another boring generic name with no personality.

MyFloorIsLava · 06/04/2021 08:46

Xiomara is pretty. Ximena reminds me of the Brazilian dish xinxim, which isn't likely to be a big problem in reality but puts me off the name a bit.

chillied · 06/04/2021 08:49

Xiomara because of the sound, nice to start with the S sound.

Squidgling · 06/04/2021 08:50

I like Xiomara

TenThousandSpoons · 06/04/2021 08:51

Xiomara. I was going to say Ximena before reading the pronunciations but prefer the See...to He... beginning.

Constance11 · 06/04/2021 08:52

Xiomara would get my vote. What's the meaning of the name?

Goatinthegarden · 06/04/2021 08:52

Y vote is for Xiomara. I think it sounds beautiful.

I like the potential shortenings of Xi-Xi, Xio or Mara too.

Ximena sounds very similar to Jemima, which seems a bit more old fashioned to me (although still pretty).

ILoveShula · 06/04/2021 08:55

Of the two, Ximena.

Most people in the UK will struggle with the X.

somuchlaundrytowash · 06/04/2021 08:56

Neither, sorry

Saisong · 06/04/2021 08:58

They are both lovely, I prefer Ximena I think, but undoubtedly most people will take a stab at 'zee-mena' first. People learn though!

somuchlaundrytowash · 06/04/2021 08:58

@closetclosetcloset

If your comment is "neither" or any other negative remark please feel free to ignore this post and keep scrolling. I'm not looking for opinions on them, it's a simple this or that question.
You asked lol
NamingBabies · 06/04/2021 08:58

Xiomara sounds/looks the nicest to me! Both lovely choices though

ColonelPine · 06/04/2021 08:59

Xiomara

thecognoscenti · 06/04/2021 09:00

They are both gorgeous, but I think Xiomara has the edge. Beautiful names. Ignore the rude responses!

justwaydamin · 06/04/2021 09:03

Ooh I love Xiomara.
And you're right, it's not difficult to pronounce once you know how.

ColouringPencils · 06/04/2021 09:08

Lovely! I love the soft shh sound in Xiomara and also think Mara and Xi/ Xio both sound cool as a nickname when she is older.

Tal45 · 06/04/2021 09:09

Xiomara I think sounds much prettier and I really like it. Like a PP the other one instantly made me think He-man which totally put me off.

BaronessBomburst · 06/04/2021 09:13

Xiomara

Enough4me · 06/04/2021 09:13

Xiomara,
But think most will spell Siamara due to pronunciation.

Macaroni46 · 06/04/2021 09:14

@Justaonetimeting @Yamaya I was responding to OP with my own personal experience of having an unusual name and from my perspective, it sucks.
I've had to send back formal documents, had my name pronounced wrong at public events or misspelled on programmes etc. So I stand by what I say - don't saddle your DC with an unusual name.

SecretCiderCellar · 06/04/2021 09:19

Ximena by far.

GreatestSh0wUnicorn · 06/04/2021 09:22

Xiomara is a font never realised it could be a name but I like it.
