Thoughts on Sebastian? And nicknames?

Hi ladies. We wanted something traditional and not too common so we like the sound of Sebastian. What's your thoughts? Only concern is what nickname would we use?

I know two Sebastian's. Both early teens. One is Seb, the other is Bas. Bas was introduced as Bas at primary school then later they were told his name was Bas, I think if you want the nonstandard nickname, you have to push it.

(Similarly I know a woman whos DD is Elizabeth known as Beth, not Liz. When she was born, they announced their dd as Beth, then later told people it was actually Elizabeth)

Sorry that wasn't clear! The Bas was introduced as Bas then later everyone was told his full name was Sebastian. If you introduce as Sebastian, you'll probably get Seb as a nickname.

Our second DS was very nearly Sebastian but I just couldn't get on board with Seb. Every Sebastian (not many admittedly!) I have met has been called Seb.

You could end up with Bas but I think you'd need to force that a bit and well, it's not very nice either is it?

mistermagpie · 29/03/2021 14:11

Our non-Sebastian alternatives were Reuben and Hamish by the way - just in case you were looking for inspiration!

I think Bash is adorable - the show was Reign to PP who was wondering!

Dundustin · 29/03/2021 14:30

I like it. Baz.

Yes! This was the show!

I have a friend who’s Christian and he doesn’t go in for nicknames, never has, everyone calls him his name Christian. And it’s suits him, he’s not a Chris or any other variation.
My DD has a nickname that’s totally unrelated to her actual name, it’s just a sweet word that suits her and as friends have heard us use it they’ve picked it up. I don’t think picking a nickname really works. It will depend on the child.
For the record I love Sebastian, Bash and Seb would be my preferred nn in that order.

we like the name but didnt chose it as didnt like nicknames for it, hw would end up being called Seb or Bas

fruitpastille · 01/04/2021 11:32

I like Seb.
What about Solomon/Sol as an alternative?

Violetlavenders · 01/04/2021 11:36

It's a shame about the lack of nice nicknames. Unless you always use Sebastian?

I agree that Solomon nickname Sol is a good alternative.

Violetlavenders · 01/04/2021 11:40

To avoid the nickname problem you could choose a shorter name that's less likely to get shortened.

KirstenBlest · 02/04/2021 12:37

Dislike it.

TatianaBis · 02/04/2021 15:13

Seb is fine, I don’t know what people are fussing about.

All the Sophies I know are called Soph, which is not a very nice nn but it doesn’t seem to put anyone off.
