Alliteration

What do people think about alliteration with first and surnames? Our surname begins with a W and we love the name Winifred but I can't decide if it's a bit too "superhero" like Clark Kent, Lex Luther etc or whether I'm being completely ridiculous and it's fine. We have one other name we like but Winifred is my favourite apart from the alliteration

I love it! Go for it!

WeeGobshiteBentBastard · 27/03/2021 23:10

I don't like it. What about Willa? Or Wilnelia?

AlwaysLatte · 27/03/2021 23:17

My grandmother's middle name was Winifred, but she hated her first name so she went by 'Win' for most of her life.

DramaAlpaca · 27/03/2021 23:23

I think it'll sound really good with an alliterative surname, partly because it's uncommon these days and a bit unexpected as a name. I don't see Winifred as a superhero sort of name, but it's strong and feisty and will sound good with a surname beginning with the same letter.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 27/03/2021 23:30

I love alliteration names. I went to school with a Donna Donaldson (not real surname but close sounding enough.

My Nan was a Winifred. Known as Freda (Free-da).

MindyStClaire · 27/03/2021 23:50

DD2 has an extremely alliterative name. In this case I think it depends on the vowels - Winifredv Watson sounds lovely, Winifred Williams a bit much.

Floralnomad · 28/03/2021 00:02

I think Winifred is an odd one because in itself it’s pretty awful but Winnie is quite cute , however on the alliteration side Winifred Williams sounds ok but Winnie Williams sounds a bit silly . So to me it depends what you plan to use as an everyday name .

@WeeGobshiteBentBastard

I don't like it. What about Willa? Or Wilnelia?

It doesn't really solve the problem though

violetmonster · 28/03/2021 00:21

I've always been confused as to why people choose alliterative names because I think they always sound like comic book characters (look up marvel alliteration names, there's loads of them!)

Smallonesaremorejuicy · 28/03/2021 00:32

Winifred is a delightful name , with lots of pretty nn. I think it will be fine with your surname. Good luck ☘️

Quercus3 · 28/03/2021 05:01

I love alliterative names, so memorable

mathanxiety · 28/03/2021 05:14

I love it. It seems to me it's more of a thing in Ireland than the UK though.

partyatthepalace · 28/03/2021 09:48

It’s fine - can be very elegant and memorable. Just check your combo isn’t the kind of twee that’s sweet on a toddler but not an adult.

grandmasterstitch · 28/03/2021 10:03

Our surname isn't a Wi at the beginning otherwise I do think that would sound daft. Maybe it shouldn't bother me then. I could call her anything really and if she gets married and changes her name then it could be alliterative anyway

Winifred is lovely and alliteration is fine in most cases.

Winnie Winick not good.
Winifred Winick is fine.

Pudding01 · 28/03/2021 10:32

I quite like alliteration names. Definitely will get related to a superhero/comic book name, but does that bother you?

When I get married next year my name will be H H and I quite like the idea of sounding like a hero lol

Ellmau · 28/03/2021 11:03

It depends on the combination, but too often sounds comic.

I fear Winifred W... might sound dowdy rather than anything else.

Hufflepuffsunite · 28/03/2021 11:14

Don't worry about alliteration - I work in a secondary school and loads of names are alliterative (and so are many sibling names too on top e.g. Sam, Sarah and Suzy Smith).

RedactedTaeFeck · 28/03/2021 14:45

My DC are sort of alliterative but have the Mc in the middle - so similar to (but not) Kirsty McKenzie. It strangely sound more alliterative that something like Morag McKenzie to me anyway.

I think it really depends on the overall sound and not just the initials

I like a bit of alliteration though and have a friend whose initials are OO and it sounds fab.

MimiDaisy11 · 28/03/2021 16:35

I think there are some that sound more rhymey than others and so some work well whereas others don't.

In general though I quite like them.

BackforGood · 28/03/2021 17:08

I was going to say the same as a couple of others - does depend a bit on the surname (and also if you think she is likely to have her name shortened)

Winnie Walker, has a very different sound to it than Winnifred Williams.

mumsiedarlingrevolta · 28/03/2021 17:54

Just coming on to say I love alliterative names-

but in this case only you know how it flows

Heh1991 · 30/03/2021 03:13

I have an alliterative name and I love it! People always remember my name but it’s just the H sound that’s siimilar (not length or following letters so isn’t too comic character-sequel!)

I like Winifred and Winnie or Freddie options! I know a little girl called Freddie and think it’s super cute!

MerryChristmasToYou · 30/03/2021 09:44

Winifred Watson will be near the end of lists of names.

Flymetothestars · 30/03/2021 11:41

Love the name Winifred
The alliteration wouldn't be a factor for me
