Carys or Cerys or Kirsten or Kirstin ????

Just that really!

Can't decide!

And also how would they all be pronounced??
I'd say:
Carys - Ca-riss
Cerys - Ke-riss
Kirsten - Ker-stun
Kirstin - Ker-stin

And could /would they get shortened? Carrie / Kerry / Kirstie / Kirsty / Kirst / Caz... ??

We're in England if that makes a difference.

Thank you!

They're both going to be pronounced the same no matter how you spell it.

Undervaluedandsad · 25/03/2021 10:39

In my experience Carys and Cerys are not usually shortened. We have 1 and she is always called by her full name and we have often been complimented on it. Both names mean love which I’ve always quite liked as well.

Of the other two I prefer Kirsten. I think both would be pronounced in the same way.

Undervaluedandsad · 25/03/2021 10:41

Sorry should have added your pronunciation of Carys and Cerys are correct. In my accent it Kirsten would be pronounced Kirstin.

DaisyandIvy · 25/03/2021 10:42

Kirsten is my favourite

Synchrony · 25/03/2021 10:59

Carys or Kirsten.
I wouldn't expect either to be shortened really.

BlueRaincoat1 · 25/03/2021 11:10

Love the name Cerys, it was top of my list for a girl (I'm not Welsh, I think it works fine outside if Wales).

Crappyfridays7 · 25/03/2021 11:14

Go with what you like
Kirsty and Kirstie are the same name though
Doubt anthimg would get shortened until your daughter is older.
Also I’d pronounce Kirsten Ker-sten not Ker stun and the other spelling I change to Kristin when I read it rather than Kirstin it just looks wrong for some reason.

One of the K names is mine, I get called the name or ‘K’

KirstenBlest · 25/03/2021 11:15

Kirsten, obviously.

Carys is better than Cerys as it's more obvious how to say it. I'm not keen on either of them. They were very popular in Wales in the 1960s.

Kirsten/Kirstin - Kirsty was very popular in the 1970s.

Crappyfridays7 · 25/03/2021 11:16

I’m Scottish so accent is different you’ll find that the names will be pronounced differently by various people. My mum is English and I have some unusual pronunciations apparently- boyfriend is from edinburgh and points them out often

KirstenBlest · 25/03/2021 11:17

Carys - rhymes with Harris
Cerys - Kerris, rhymes with Ferris
Kirsten - Ker-stun
Kirstin - Ker-stin

Caz, Cez/Kez, Kirst.

KirstenBlest · 25/03/2021 11:19

Kristin might be an alternative, could be Kris, Kristy, Kitty or Kit

Twizbe · 25/03/2021 11:20

I have a Cerys we are in England (though I was born in Wales)

We do shorten it to Ce / Cece, but most people use her full name. Some people don't know how to pronounce it and say seris but we just correct them and move on.

I love the name.

partyatthepalace · 25/03/2021 11:45

Kirsten is the usual spelling, and the alternative isn’t said any differently (any variation is just accent) so go with this spelling.

Cerys / Carys - depend on which sound you want.

All nice names, not usually shortened

SteveBuscemisRheumyEye · 25/03/2021 12:11

DD's middle name is Cerys and it was a strong contender for first! I wouldn't shorten it, but I wonder if Ceri might be a deminutive?

TatianaBis · 25/03/2021 12:22

Love Carys.

Kirsten is dated.

KirstenBlest · 25/03/2021 12:24

I think they are all dated.

Stevearnottsbeard · 25/03/2021 12:27

One of my daughters middle name is Cerys, obviously not used very often but when it has been, there's never been any issues with spelling or pronunciation, always been complimented on it. We have more issues with her first name though! 😂 😂

Bluesername · 25/03/2021 12:29

Kirsten, then Carys.

KirstenBlest · 25/03/2021 12:39

I don't really like any of them. I grew up in Wales so know dozens of Caryses and I don't even like the sound. Cerys was popular in the South.
Lots of Kirstys at school.

TatianaBis · 25/03/2021 12:45

OP is in England where Carys & Cerys are not standard names.

There are Kirstys and Kirstens everywhere.

PeanutbutterPickle · 25/03/2021 13:04

Go for Carys- My favourite as it’s my daughters name. She’s at primary school and some of her friends call her Cazzy but then again must be a thing at her school as her friends Molly and Daisy get Mozzy and Dazzy Smile

KirstenBlest · 25/03/2021 13:13

I'm in England and Brenda isn't a standard name. i don't like that either.

feellikeanalien · 25/03/2021 13:17

I have a Kirsten (pronounced Kir- stin) but she is usually known as Kirsty.

ButterflyOfFreedom · 25/03/2021 13:27

Thanks all.

Another - maybe random, curve ball name compared to the others! - is Sophie.
Love love love this - though fear it is too popular... though maybe for good reason...

I'm not keen on Kirstin / Kirsten.

I'm seriously considering Cerys as a middle name at the moment. I think it sounds softer than Carys, but both are nice.
